The gossip rags are today reporting that Angelina Jolie has signed on to star in The Topkapi Affair and that filming will take place in Egypt and Russia next year (last I heard, they were scouting out locations in Turkey, as per the original film).

Most likely bollocks, but there you have it.

I wouldn't mind seeing what Chemistry Brosnan and Jolie could make together, I always wanted Jolie to star in a Brosnan Bond movie and know we're kinda gonna get it. :cooltongue:

Hmm indeed. Don't know why she'd want to do this, particularly. I'm sure she's not short of offers. Well if Broz is happy with Daniel Craig's sloppy seconds, why not. :cooltongue:

It's okay. It's not a rotten film by any means, but it's really no great shakes either. Brosnan is fine in it, Rene Russo does good work, and director John McTiernan gives us some nice visuals, but there's nothing to get especially excited about, and I don't see that there's any need for a sequel.

Well loomis love to meet you mate because you always sound so cynical and I always seem to disagree with you. McTiernan is a really great director of action escapist fare. The Thomas crown affair has more style and cool than a dozen Bond's put together. Or have I just landed into another bash Brosnan discussion which this site seems to indulge in with boring regularity.

I happen to feel the same way Loomis does, and that has nothing to do with Brosnan bashing. I just felt the film didn't offer that much more than the other thief pictures of the time (Entrapment, for example). Brosnan was fine, but there just was not any real "wow" factor to it. And I really hated the way the script turned the tough Russo character into a simpering mess by the end of it. That said, I'd still like to see it again if I feel the same way I did when I paid to see it in 1999.

However, I am curious to see what the sequel comes up with.

Brosnan and Jolie for 'Thomas Crown' Sequel

I remember very little about the Pierce Brosnan / Rene Russo version of The Thomas Crown Affair. I know that A] I liked it, B] that Rene Russo was frequently topless in it (see A], and C] there was a really cool scene with a bunch of dudes in hats. The film grossed a respectable $70 million back in 1999, and was a huge hit on video. And now a sequel is underway. You'll remember Thomas Crown was a remake of the Steve McQueen / Faye Dunaway original, which did not spawn a sequel. So are they coming up with an original story for TCA Part 2? Of course not, silly! Brosnan told Filmstalker that the sequel will be based on the Peter Ustinov classic Topkapi, and will be called The Topkapi Affair.

Moviehole is reporting that the screenplay is based on the novel Light of Day (this one, by Eric Ambler), so I suppose the script pulls from both sources. Casting has already begun on the sequel, and Brosnan says "This version of Topkapi will have a different part, different woman, and different affair. The guy is a little bit more seasoned and we're using wonderful locations this time." Wait, who is this different woman Brosnan is talking about? How do you one-up the gorgeous Rene Russo? Believe it or not, they did -- Angelina Jolie has reached a deal to play the love interest. The plot for this new adventure centers on getting the Kasikci Diamond out of Topkapki Palace, which is in Istanbul. The IMDb lists the screenwriter as Harley Peyton, whose last produced script was 2001's spotty Bandits. No word on a director yet, but let's hope they bring John McTiernan back. Mr. Die Hard stooped to making Rollerball, for crying out loud. Expect The Topkapi Affair in 2008.

Jolie's name mentioned again, eh. I don't know, I'm skeptical. Why would she want to take second billing in someone else's franchise? Maybe she's a big fan of the original.

Or maybe she just wants to be the answer to a trivia question, appearing on screen with three Bonds (Connery in Playing by heart, Craig in Tomb Raider).

Playing by Heart.

Very well recommended. Music by My Barry nonetheless.

Came into this unknowing, probably left it knowing very little more, but thoroughly enjoyed it.

Wow, what a tough audience here.

While I worried about "The Thomas Crown Affair" remake before it came out (because the original was such a classic) It actually turned out better than the original with the story changes they made (art gallery, instead of bank, etc).

The original "Topkapi" is a very entertaining film (albeit out-dated). Now while I always cringe when they try to make a sequel from a successful film, I hold out hope "The Topkapi Affair" will be an improvement over the original. They are going to have to make a lot of changes since the whole method of stealing the dagger was used in M:I 2 (i.e. lowering down on cables trapeze-style so not to touch the floor).

So I hope for the best.

(I always though Brosnan was more "Bond-like" with his confident, sauve demeanor in "Thomas Crown" than he was in the 007 films he made).

The original "Topkapi" is such a revered and respected classic that the re-make is going to have to work hard to top it.

Though I think the general film audience are not even aware of the original.

After all, look at THE ITALIAN JOB...most of the people I know here in the US don't even know of the Michael Caine original. Or THE WICKER MAN, most of my roomies watching the remake on DVD had not even heard of the Edward Woodward version.

There are numerous other examples of film audience amnesia.

from joblo.com The Verhoeven Affair Nov. 9, 2007

Source: Filmtotaal by: Dave Davis

THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR was one of Pierce Brosnan's more entertaining post-GOLDENEYE efforts (a naked Rene Russo certainly helped), so why not try to recapture that? And with the guy who made STARSHIP TROOPERS?

A CROWN sequel called THE TOPKAPI AFFAIR has been in the works for a while, but now it reportedly has a director: none other than provocative filmmaker Paul Verhoeven. According to Dutch press, the man behind the recent WWII thriller BLACK BOOK -- as well as some wonderfully explicit movie violence -- will bring back Brosnan's suave thief, who has shifted his interest from stealing paintings to stealing diamonds (um... AFTER THE SUNSET?). Angelina Jolie is also rumored for a role.

The project (which would likely require shooting in Istanbul, Turkey -- or someplace that sorta looks like it) is apparently not ready given the current strike climate, so Verhoeven first plans to make THE WINTER QUEEN (aka AZAZEL) with Milla Jovovich, based on the novel about a sleuth in 19th century Russia. Verhoeven is also attached to an adaptation of the murder mystery THE PAPERBOY.

Thanks to 'Tump' for the heads up, and 'Meister Evo' for the follow-up!
Extra Tidbit: THE TOPKAPI AFFAIR is loosely based on Eric Ambler's novel "The Light of Day", already adapted into the 1964 heist movie TOPKAPI.

Wow, this raises the interest level in this one in my eyes. I was never a fan of the '99 Thomas Crown Affair and only mildly interested in this.

Verhoven is one of the most interesting directors out there. That being said, this seems far away from his normally sordid territory with lots of blood and guts and sex. The last Crown seemed to be almost a TV movie. Maybe he'll peel back the layers of the character or at least give us something beyond the Lifetime movie ending of the first film.

Interesting post found here:
http://www.filmstalk...thomas_cro.html

It gives a link to the recording of a Paul Verhoeven interview on a Dutch radio (in Dutch) :
http://cgi.omroep.nl...20071105-23.wma
quoting the article :

head over to about 46m 30s to get the start of his interview and 50m 50s for the precise comments on this film

As far as I understand, he first comments upon the WGA strike, stating this could be quite long and explaining what is at stake, and then, on a question of the speaker about his projects, he tells he is going to direct the sequel of the Thomas Crown Affair, but as the scenario is not yet ready, the film has to be delayed because of the WGA strike. The casting has to be delayed too, because they cannot choose the actors before the script is completed.

But my Dutch is very bad, so if anyone can correct / fill in the blanks...

yeah, I would guess it will have to happen some time after the strike, seeing as there is no script whatsoever (that we know of).
