Isn't Thomas Crown without the love story angle just James Bond?
Er, no!
Similar but fundamentally different.
Did you draw the same comparison when McQueen played it?
The characters may appear to be similar but the structure of the films and what they do are very different.

But please, tell me more of the structure of this upcoming movie.

I wouldn't think it'd affect it.How does Brosnan's falling out with EON affect this, I wonder? Sony prepared to back him all the way on this, or am I missing something?
Sony would avoid releasing The Topkapi Affair at the same time as Casino Royale, but I daresay that would be it.
I always found it interesting that news of Brosnan renewing his contract with MGM (including the deal for the Thomas Crown sequel) followed just a few days after word leaked of him being dropped from the role of Bond.

I doubt this version will be superior to the classic TOPKAPI from 1964 with Peter Ustinov and Maximilan Schell.

I wonder too, if they will attempt a variation on the hanging by a rope stunt, because I'm sure people will accuse them of ripping off Mission: Impossible, when it fact the Tom Cruise M:I was ripping off Topkapi.
Then again, series creator Bruce Geller did acknowledge that he based Mission: Impossible on the movie.

If McTiernan is in, so am I. Otherwise....
Hmm...I think McTiernan is still persona non grata in Hollywood right now with that whole wiretapping business. Is that still going on? Anyway, I wouldn't mind seeing Richard Shepard (The Matador) do the job

Oh, yes, that wiretapping thing. From McT's Wikipedia page:
On April 3, 2006, McTiernan was charged in federal court with lying to the FBI during an interview in the wiretapping investigation involving Anthony Pellicano. He was arraigned and pled guilty on April 17, 2006, and is the 14th person charged in this case.
McTiernan was charged with an information, rather than in grand jury indictment, which means he waived his right to an indictment and suggests he may have reached either a prior plea agreement with prosecutors or some sort of cooperating agreement.
McTiernan will be sentenced on July 31, 2006, and faces a maximum of five years in federal prison. Under federal sentencing guidelines, he more likely will receive six months or less, plus three years probation and a $250,000 fine.
Now, whether this means his name is mud in Hollywood and/or would rule him out for THOMAS CROWN 2.... I don't know. Obviously, he couldn't direct from gaol, but I somehow doubt that he'll get anything like that maximum five-year stretch. We'll have to see.
Shepard is an inspired idea, though, and I could certainly see that happening. Great suggestion.

Good news. I wonder how it will compare to the classic TOPKAPI?
Wouldn't surprise me if the ending is different in that theGood point Darren.

Well, the 1999 TCA didn't follow the ending of the 1968 TCA so I would be surprised if this new film is faithful to the 1964 one.

Correct - but what's more is that the original Topkapi is based on a novel by Eric Ambler called The Light of Day.If I can get my head around this correctly, is this a remake that is also a sequel to another remake?

The Pelicano case.
McTiernan did admit to paying Pelicano to illegally wiretap a producer.
