Batman Returns without a shadow of a doubt. Outstanding film.

And Keaton was fantastic.

Batman Returns. The atmosphere was dead-on, and while it isn't necessarily the comic-book Batman, Burton's vision is engrossing on its own. It also helps that I happen to love Pfeifer's magnificent Catwoman so much, that even if the rest of the movie sucked I'd like it just because of that performance.

EDIT: And Keaton was the best. Not the Bruce Wayne of the comic books, but enjoyable nonetheless (and when he was in the suit, he WAS Batman!). Hopefully Bale will be able to top him, though - I'm looking forward to the playboy, Bond-esque billionaire of the comics.

You are so right Harmsway. :)

Pfeiffer had the best role in the entire 4 films IMO.

I happen to liked Batman Forever the best. I liked the whole puzzle thing that the Riddler kept leaving and I thought it was good.

That was my first Batman film and it is indeed good, but I think the director just focused too much on glamour and little else. IMO of course.

Batman Returns is an expensive mood piece that has nothing to do with Batman and is to bleak for me to enjoy. I'd say the first film is excellent and so is Keaton, but so is Batman Forever and Kilmer. And, Batman and Robin and Clooney are actually not bad but pretty entertaining. For those who hate not "treating a comic book character with respect", get over it. A comic book was supposed to be kid's entertainment in the first place, nothing wrong with going back to that from time to time.

Comic books are no longer "kid's entertainment" and that's why people react. The best comics are mature stories. It goes without saying that comics have lost much of their innocence. Batman is really not a kid's comic book any more. It's violent, extremely dark, and it's definitely not something I'd let my kids read (heck, the comic book Batman is often much more violent and/or disturbing than its film counterpart). That Batman is what the fans hold on to and consider the finest vision of the superhero (I'm one of them). So going back to camp and garishness of the kid's Batman seems like backpedaling.

I think the best Batman movie by far is the animated Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Return of the Joker and Sub-Zero are also quite excellent. Honestly, I will take any of those over any of the live-action films to this point.

Of the live-action ones, I will definitely take Tim Burton's first Batman. To me, it's the only one of them that is above average. However, even back then, despite giving the films a great "look", Burton had problems with creating coherent plots, and with concentrating too much on the villains and not enough on Batman -- problems that really came to the forefront in Batman Returns. And Schumacher, well, I won't even get into it except to say, he did not understand Batman.

I will be EXTREMELY disappointed if Batman Begins is not a huge improvement on all of the live-action films so far.

I'll agree on the consensus of some mistakes Burton made, that said I still love his two films, but his "problems" are heaven compared to whatever the hell Schumacher had in mind.

I mean, Batsuit nipples...how sexy. :)

I can't vote, because my favorite isn't on there - Batman: Dead End, a short film directed by Sandy Collera. Either you really like it or you really hate it. Some people complain because there isn't much of a story and there are a few characters in it that kinda ruin the tone of the movie, but what's admirable about it is that: A. It shows that a Batman in tights can actually WORK; and B. It's just really well made, from a technical stand-point.

It used to be available on the internet, but I'm not so sure that it is any more. The director went on to make a "trailer" called World's Finest, about a fake movie which essentially teams Superman up with Batman. Collera brings his Batman/Bruce Wayne from Dead End back for this, and introduces a pretty decent Superman/Clark Kent, and offers a pretty impressive "fan trailer". For one thing, it has a really cool ending...

I pick Batman Returns, it just works perfectly for me. As for favorite actor? Keaton was the best with Clooney in second (he's not that bad it's just that the film he's in is so awful it brings down everything associated with it).

Batman (1989)

Can't imagine how many times I watched that VHS when I was little.

"Don't kill me man! Don't kill me!" :)

Michael Keaton for me. I like Adam West, but the TV shows are just a little to funny to watch. I thought Val Kilmer was ok, and George Clooney wasn't bad, Joel Schumacher was though. :)

I'm ambivalent to Sandy Collora. First off, I thought that Dead End was really fun and cool (though I don't think it satisfactorily made the Batman-in-tights work, at least for a full length pic). But the direction was pretty cool and I enjoyed it for what it was. World's Finest, on the other hand, was nowhere near as good, because it was ridiculously cheesy and horribly acted (I know it is a fan film after all, but the facts still remain).

But all-in-all, the best Batman flick is really Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. Awesome stuff.

Batman Returns for me. Mostly because i think Michelle was the best cat ever and I liked how it wasnt as cartoony as any of the other movies. I thougth every body was good in it but the only bad part about it was how gross penquin was.

I voted for the 1966 Adam West movie, which I remember having a not inconsiderable amount of camp charm. I'm not a Batman fan, and the Burton and Schumacher films left me cold. All of which said, I have the strong feeling that next year's BATMAN BEGINS will be EXCELLENT and will wow even someone like yours truly who has never had any interest in comic books/superhero movies. :)

For now I say Batman Returns it is great but next year I say Batman Begins this will be perfect. Christopher Nolan does really understand Batman. Wonder if he understands Bond then he would be great as director.

Batman (1989) does it for me. Jack's interpretation of the Joker is spot on, (even though they screw around with the character a bit) and he's just a lot of fun to watch.

I just came across something that'll make you think even less of Collora - he goes around on imdb.com posting on the Batman: Dead End boards under the name "jacksmedullaoblongata", or something, and actually bashes people who say the slightest negative thing about his movie, even if they're still saying that there are several things about the movie that they liked. And what's worse, he doesn't say, "Hey, I'm Sandy Collora guys, and I really appreciate your input", but he goes around as a FAN, saying "Collora's work is genius/brillaint/etc/etc." Disgusting, eh?

Sandy Colloras movie had stupid actors and a pointless plot. No, I am not Joel Schumacher, I just don't go with the flow. And I did indeed love the classic 90s animated series, and that probably was the best version of the Dark Knight. Kevin Conroy could very well be the best Batman.

Batman is my favourite. Although Batman Returns is pretty much on the same level. I just said Batman was my favourite because it came first.

Any film that can have Kim Basinger and a soundtrack by Prince and prevent both of them from looking/sounding ridiculous is quite a feat. And God help me, I still have a soft spot for Prince's Partyman.

I've got extremely high hopes for Batman Begins, although I still sort of prefer the original title of Batman: Intimidation.
