When I read my first James Bond book, Doctor No, I pictured Sean Connery. But when I read more of the James Bond novels, I pictured someone completely different than who they show on the silver screen. To tell you the honest truth, I like the Bond that I picture in my head while I'm reading the books, more than any other Bonds.

In some of the later novels (I'm thinking of YOLT in particular), it seems kind of difficult to me to not picture Connery

A strange patchwork of a Frankenstein looking man.

But then I see him everywhere.

I've just posted on a thread about which post Fleming novels should be made into films and i suddenly thought about who i imagine as Bond as i read the novels. I'm pretty sure this has been done on here before but i'll refresh it.
I could never imagine any actor in the Fleming and Amis, and Gardner novels because i felt they had a different feel to the films so i always thought of another Bond, just an image i had in my head but with the Benson novels i always thought of Brosnan as i think that's what Benson had pictured when he was writing them. How about anyone else?

sorry just realized i've started a new thread on current and future Bond films instead of Novels. Oh well!

Same here! I have a mental image of the literary Bond when reading Fleming, or even Gardner novels, but it is not related to a "flesh and bones" actor of the franchise. About the Benson novels, the only one I ever read was a novelization, so the Brosnan image was quite obvious
Oddly enough, I've read some Bond fan fictions and the Bond image you can figure out depends heavily on the writers: some are really flemingesques, other deeply influenced by the franchise. It's an interesting panorama of the Bond images people have

I am fairly new to reading Bond Novels, I always imagined Sean Connery as Bond. He has that needed ripeness. Now I like to imagine Daniel Craig and how cold as ice he seems to be. He doesn't want to let you see his feelings and you really have to look at him hard to see how he feels about things. His earlier Films definitely show how supperb of an actor he is. I'm looking forward to hopefully see more than just 3 Bond Movies with him. Like Connery I can see him be Bond for a long time.
I do have a question about the Bond Novels and maybe somebody on this Forum can help me out. I am trying to find out when the Short Stories were written, to know where they fit in. Somehow they confuse me a bit. The only thing I have been able to find out so far, is that they are coming out in May this year. I was wondering if they have been published in earlier years and how I can find them. If somebody can help me out I would greatly appreciate it.

You'll find all the answers on this website  The short stories were published in two collections : For Your Eyes Only (1960, between Goldfinger and Tunderball) and Octopussy & The Living Daylights (1966, i.e. after the death of Ian Fleming).
There are also some uncompleted short stories.

I'm sure this has been done before. But I always see the actor who played Bond in the movie. For Example, I see Connery whilst reading Goldfinger, Moore whilst reading Live And Let Die and so on... And all of the other novels which I have read, (short storys, unfilmed novels etc..) I see the current Bond, Daniel Craig.

When I read Bond, I imagine... myself. A 5'10 white guy with dirty blonde hair and a Phillip Seymour Hoffman-like build.

I don't think his hair color qualifies as dirty blonde, plus, as I already noted, he's in much better shape than I am. :(

You've just embedded an image of yourself in my head. From now on every Bond book I read will feature you

Must be a good description of yourself. I can see Phillip Seymour-Hoffman as a villain in a Bond Movie. Or a eccentric Inventor of Special Weapons and Stuff for MI6. I thought he did a great job in Mission Impossible III. I seen him recently on TV at the IFA Awards and he was really funny. So both ways fits him.
I have always imagined Bond to be a good build, in shape, taller than me ( taller than 5'10", but Craig is that tall) guy.

Sorry. Just think... Sean Connery... Sean Connery... Sean Connery... or go to that clinic in "Internal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind" and have your memory of this thread erased. :)

And I was just joking. I don't really picture myself... usually I picture either Connery or Craig.

When I read Fleming's books, The closest actor I PHYSICALLY picture is sort of a young James Brolin (not exactly but close, oh and British). I don't picture Brolin's voice because I don't picture Brolin, he just looks kind of like Brolin.
