I always envision Lazenby and Dalton when I read a Fleming novel.

I found when I started reading I saw Connery. However a couple novels into the series I began to picture someone different from any of the actors the more I saw the literary and cinematic Bonds as seperate entities.

I usually picture Bond looking quite a bit the way Mike Grell drew him in the comic books. I usually picture him in a pretty non-discript gray suit though, not so Italian as how Pierce dresses.

I always imagine Bond looking like a mix between Timothy Dalton and Hugh Jackman, even though in THE JAMES BOND BEDSIDE COMPANION, the illustration of James Bond's literary appearance looks sort of like Roger Moore. I just can't imagine Bond looking like that though. Dalton really looks like the Bond described. He has the green eyes, the comma, the look, the attitude, everything.

I tend to picture the actor who appeared in the film version whenever appropriate. It definitely makes Moonraker and The Man With the Golden Gun interesting reads.

When I first read the James Bond books at the end of the 60's and the begining of the 70's I was picturing the man on the cover. Sean Connery faor most of them and Moore for LALD.
But as I was reading all the books, there was someting wrong about that. The man didn't act as I the men on the cover were supposed to do in my mind.
So now, I picture a James Bond not very different from the comic books.

I've been reading a lot of 007 lately and I've noticed that I picture different people differently such as I picture Bond as Connery in the Fleming novels and Brosnan in the Benson Novels (when I get to Gardner it'll probably be Moore :) Hope not). I was just wondering who everybody else pictures Bond, his allies, and his enemies as. Here's a list of mine

Casino Royale
Bond: switches between Connery and Brosnan
Le Chiffre: Peter Lorre
Mathis: The French waiter from "The Simpsons" (The one who had a stroke)

Live and Let Die
Bond: Connery
Storekeeper in Florida (can't think of his name): Gene Hackman
Everyone else pictured like in the movie

Bond in Benson Novels: Brosnan
Espada in Doubleshot: Older Antonio Banderas
Hera in TFOD: Red head in YOLT (Osato's assistant)

Well that's just a short list what about some of yours?

I've recently re-read up to From Russia With Love and the Bond in my mind's eye is non-descript really. Not any of the actors, that's for sure.

So far anyway. Goldfinger is next up, so I'll see if that trend continues, which I hope so because when I read Bond he's MY Bond, not someone elses.

Even though Pierce Brosnan and Sean Connery are my favorite Bonds from the movies, I find myself picturing Timothy Dalton as Bond when reading the novels.

Fleming Novels: In my opinion Bond switches between Connery and Dalton depending on the book. For example:
Dr. No & Casino Royale: Connery
Live & Let Die, Goldfinger and The Living Daylights: Dalton
I picture the villains as all the actors or actresses in the films.

Gardner Novels: Dalton
Tamil Rehani from Role of Honor: The actor who played Cameron Shah in TLD.
Nena Blofeld: Famke Jansen

Benson novels: Brosnan
Goro Yoshida from Man With The Red Tattoo: Ken Watanabe

These are just a few that stick out in my mind!

Though Connery is my favourite Bond, I always picture Roger Moore whenever I read Fleming (however, thinking about it, I could equally picture Dirk Bogarde in the part).

I used to picture, more often than not a generic Bond which was based on McClusky's version. Recently though, I've been picturing Cary Grant everytime I read a Bond story. Ideal really, since that is who Fleming based Bond's appearance and mannerisms on.

Interesting choice and I can picture Cary in the role. Oddily enough he was Chandler's choice for Philip Marlowe and Deighton's for "Harry Palmer".

I think Mike Grell captured the "hardened" Hoagy Carmichael down pat. In my mind though, Bond looks like that, but with a little more of a 50's male model quality added in.

Connery, Dalton, Lazenby, and Brosnan all slip very easily into the Book Bond of Fleming. Moore fits less well for me, but even he sometimes fits. I'm talking Fleming here, the other stuff I picture a 2-dimensional video game character.

When i started reading the bond novels about 5 years ago i pictured Brosnan as Bond but that image quickly disapeared and i just pictured the man Fleming described with the cruel mouth and scar.
None of the actors that have played bond really look like Fleming's Bond but if i'd have to choose one i'd go with Dalton, he didn't have the perfect hair and he did have abit of a cruel look about him.

None of the actors, but rather a different image I conjured up on my own. Actually, looking at it now, it's not to dissimilar to the Commander logo at the top corner.

I see none of them really. Rather I see Fleming's Bond (I'm sure the interpretation of that character is a little bit different for everyone).

When reading I see my own Bond. I always try to stick with the literary version when I'm reading and fill in th left out details with my imagination.

It's liek seeing a movie based on any other book, the character on the screen is just the casting director's idea of what the character is, doesnt have to be mine though.

I've only read two and I am currently reading my third bond novel.

But so far I've pictured Dalton, Craig and created my own vision of James Bond while reading. Like with Live and Let Die, I, from time to time, picture the girl looking like young Jane Seymour from the movie, and at times I saw my own vision of that character.

Imagination is a beautiful thing. Aint it ?

It's strange, but when I read the Bond I see changes throughout the book. Some chapters I see Craig, others I see Dalton, and some I see Connery. Just depends on what the chapter is about and who I can see acting it out. :)
