Most likely didn't want to step too much on EON's toes.

That always reminded me of the gunbarrel too.Funny you should bring this up. I always thought that Taliafilm missed an opportunity to slip in a reference to the gun barrel when Bond & Largo were playing "Domination". The shield they use in the game to block the nuclear missiles irises open like a camera shutter so, when Connery uses it to block a missile that Largo sent his way, it reminded me of the gun barrel.

I thought the grid-work of "007" was actually pretty cool.
Recently, on one of the cable reruns of NSNA (well a spot for it) they had cut together some scenes and had put the classic Bond theme over the spot. It wasn't bad, but just didn't seem right.
NSNA is and will always be it's own Bond film.

Even though MGM/UA owns the film, I don't know why they would bother to recut the film like an Eon-produced James Bond film or add the gun barrel sequence to the beginning. Even if Eon granted permission to use the gun barrel logo, where would they find the necessary footage of fifty-three year old Sean Connery?
I don't think it is possible that director Irvin Kershner and producers Jack Schwatzman and Kevin McClory would have filmed a gun barrel sequence for the film knowing that it would invite a lawsuit from Eon and MGM/UA.

I was on a website about NSNA and they created
a cross-hair gunbarrel-like logo
music composed for the sequence, which can
be found on the NSNA Soundtrack.

Agreed. I wonder if Kevin McClory and co. were planning to use it again if they made a sequel to NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN or another Bond film at some point. Could have been the equivalent of the gunbarrel opening for the McClory Bonds.I thought the grid-work of "007" was actually pretty cool.

I thought the so-called gridwork was OK, but the way the last 3 bars raise up/down to clear the view was a little lame.

The 007 logo with the gun attached to the 7 is copyrighted but as for '007' - I would assume that couldn't be copyrighted as it is just a number. Much like names are....... which is why certain Mr MacDonald who tried to sue the fast food chain over the use of his nameWith everything seemingly a copyright issue when it comes to Bond it's good to know that at least "007" isn't.

I'm sure I read somewhere that a spoof gunbarrel was 'planned' for Casino Royale. They never filmed it though.
I'd love to hear more about this NSNA one though.

Yes, it does, the music is quite quiet and then builds up. The 007 grid itself, while I don't think it's that great, it's fine for not being able to use the copyrighted gunbarrel. The grid just sort of snaps on now.

Sorry to geek out here, but I really do feel that NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN has just about the coolest opening of any Bond film - in fact, of any film. The grid of 007s making way for the aerial shot of jungle and islands, Connery running through the undergrowth, punching out the guard (not sure about that strange frisbee thing of his, though). I even love (for some reason) the fact that the opening credits are in red. And before anyone says "Shame about that rotten title song", allow me to state that I like it. Great opening. Great movie. (Wow, I've just noticed a new Smilie.)
I agree that the song is fair, not horrible. The only problem I have is somewhat bland overview shots of the water. It gets better when Connery comes into it.

No, no, I love those shots. They scream to me "travelogue", "exoticism", and all the rest of it.The only problem I have is somewhat bland overview shots of the water.
Yes, I like these new Smilies:

I do love the travelogue aspect, but I just think they could have shot those scenes a bit better. No matter, overall it's a good seqeunce! No, no, I love those shots. Old school Bondage, in other words.

As I remember it, a grey version is on screen and then a red version of it zooms onto that. It's a bit weird. Then the screen goes black and the grid appears.

Really? I have the clamshell VHS and it's there in all it's glory. Are you sure what you saw was the old, old WB logo? It's not the WB shield in anyway. It's this one (bad pic, but it's the only one I can find).I've got a copy of NSNA that I taped off the tv. That's got the old WB logo but no such thing like zencat said happens. Sorry that's really bad English but it's late and I'm tired.

I love that old WB logo. It really is a design classic. In fact, I was thinking of having a T-shirt made with it, not because I have any connection whatsoever to Warners (I don't), but just because it looks (IMO) so darn cool. And then I thought, why the heck should I walk around giving Warners free advertising? Are you sure what you saw was the old, old WB logo? It's not the WB shield in anyway. It's this one (bad pic, but it's the only one I can find).
I remember that logo from a British rental VHS tape of NSNA I bought in the mid-80s (in the days before "sell-through" video tapes). Think it had a red background, though, before going into the "007 grid".

Now you mention it I do recall seeing NSNA with this logo. Just when I thought I had erased all knowledge of the film from my memory....I love that old WB logo. An interesting and little known side note is that the logo was designed by Saul Bass.
