For me, it was a toss-up between Dr. No and Thunderball. I decided on Thunderball ultimately because I just love the "war beneath the waves sequence" sooo much! It seems to me that no other action film before or since has ever had a large-scale scuba fight either.
FYI: I may be wrong but the fight with Largo and his henchmen on the Disco Volante's bridge served as an inspiration to Steven Spielberg when planning/organizing the truck scene in Raiders of the Lost Ark.

My Connery favourites:
Dr. No
From Russia With Love
Goldfinger*
Thunderball

* I am really not sure about this film. I used to love it before, then for a while I felt it had lost some of it's "magic". I rewatched it right before Christmas, and kind of fell in love again. I think it's Oddjob that "saves" the movie. When watching the older Bond films, I am traditionally a fan of the big old SPECTRE syndicate, which we don't hear a thing about in this film.

For years, I argued that TB was the best, but after another recent viewing of FRWL, I am finally changing my mind - it stands up much better after 45 years.

1. From Russia with Love
2. Thunderball
-huge dip-
3. Dr. No
4. Goldfinger
-unworthy below here-
5. You Only Live Twice
6. Diamonds are Forever
-below this line shouldn't even count-
7. Never Say Never Again

Without doubt my favorite has to be Goldfinger. That shows James Bond at the peak of his sophistication, he stays in the expensive hotel (Fontaibleau) he drives the expensive car (64 DB5) he drinks the expensive champagne (Dom Perigon 53) finally he dresses in that beautiful 3 piece Grey Linen Suit. Best Bond film EVER! PLUS THe FACT THE COOLEST LINE AS WELL

I personally love Goldfinger. Bond was definitely just about perfect here. There's some great lines in this, too. I love this one:

"My dear girl, there are some things that just aren't done, such as drinking Dom Perignon '53 above the temperature of 38 degrees Fahrenheit. That's just as bad as listening to the Beatles without earmuffs!"

It really showed how he wasn't like others of the era. He didn't get into childish fads; he had no time for pop music. Perfect. Just perfect.

If you haven't figured it out, I voted on Goldfinger.

I watched FRWL again last week and thoroughly enjoyed it. The plot is totally believable.

Summary.

Plot to kill a spy.
Set a trap, bait it with a piece of equipment and a beautiful girl.
Film them having sex.
Attempt the kill in a high profile environment.

Bond's gadgets are sensible multi use items.

The locations are exotic and mysterious.
Grant is an excellent killer.
Brilliant.

Because I don't find them very good films.

I love both FRWL and Dr. No. They are near perfect. Both are in my top five. I see no reason not to like them.
