For me its Goldfinger. Its got the iconic images (Golden girl, Aston Martin, tux under the wetsuit), Connery at his coolest, a soundtrack that rocks and a script that flows like classic poetry and fine wine.

Can I ask why you love Thunderball so much? I really like it, but there are elements that bore me a little.

Also - Goldfinger has so many iconic images - probably the best are Jill Masterson painted gold, and the Aston Martin reveal.

It doesn't have as lumpy a plot as Goldfinger, especially if you're watching them one after the other. I also like how Fiona's little rant to Bond pokes numerous holes in the character of Pussy Galore, but that's just me...

Yes, I like those elements too. I like Fiona Volpe full stop. However, how does she know to call him "Mr Bond, James Bond"? When she asks his name he says "James Bond". Has she been told of this little quirk of Bond's and is mocking it, like Zukovsky mocks "shaken not stirred" in Goldeneye?

Sean Connery is my favorite.
He has that best Bond personality and the best dialogue delivery.

My favorite is Goldfinger, then after that would probably be Thunderball and Diamonds are Forever.

I posted this a few days after I first joined. It's interesting how things have changed since then. Diamonds Are Forever is now one of my least favorites.

What a question? FRWL of course.
This picture has the most realistic athmosphere of all the Bond-pictures.

I would go with Dr. No, since it was the start of the series and was not plagued by any wearing out of traditions.

Well, I wouldn't begrudge the other films if they're able to succeed in the traditional elements. When they start to become repetitive and irritatingly similar, that's when the traditionalism start to become more of a predicament than a good fashion. Main example being the last couple of entries before Casino Royale, where the criticism of "you watched one, you watched them all" is as applicable as ever.

From Russia With Love, Goldfinger and Thunderball, on the other hand, are all able to succeed into establishing the Bond-tradition with their own unique spin story wise and present their own identity - though Goldfinger and Thunderball do suffer in a couple of moments due to the various implausibility elements that the series started to then take and overtake soon after with far-fetched gadgets and so forth, which often is the catalyst for the series

I too find Thunderball to be superior to Goldfinger for numerous reasons:

1. A much better gunbarrel
2. A more entertaining PTS. The fight between Simmons and Connery is classic.
3. A much cooler title sequence(actually done by Binder) and title song.
4. A more interesting villain. Goldfinger is actually one of my least favorite villains. He gets on my nerves very quick. Largo seems more down to earth, but much more menacing.
5. A slightly better performance by Sean. He seemed more relaxed and extremely into his role in TB.
6. The score for Thunderball kills. It is bloody awesome. I prefer it to Goldfinger's score any day.
7. The girls are so much more beautiful. Goldfinger more than likey has my least favorite Bond girls. Pussy Galore never cut it for me and the rest are no different.

I voted for Thunderball. It's beautiful to look at and has one of the most epic storylines in the series.

How true, the whole film including the soundtrack has a breezy feel. I love the plot in that, its simple but executed with sheer brilliance.

FRWL and Goldfinger are the two best Connery's films, but i think that Goldfinger is slightly better.
Undoubtedly, they are both in the top five Bond movies!

I voted for Dr. No. Nothing like the first. Except for the best. In this case both. Just love this movie.

Somehow, I'm not surprised to see FRWL in this lead. But I am surprised to see Thunderball ahead of Goldfinger.

Actually i love all Connery's Bondfilms. I voted for From Russia with Love, but Goldfinger comes second. Never Say Never Again is not a real Bondmovie for me, but simply a normal good movie.

I watched Thunderball again today.

It's a great Bond movie but doesn't quite have the same plot, atmosphere and excitement of FRWL. It's a great example of Bond during his 1960s' heyday, and shows a team at the top of its game in every respect. Connery is great, and it's just before he got tired of the role, and Nassau looks beautiful, as does Domino. But I'd love to hear from those who rate Thunderball as their favourite 007 movie, because I want to know what makes it better than the rest, to them.

Glad to oblige you DaveBond21 :(. The following is my earlier post when I first voted for Thunderball which explains why it's my fave-

I vote for TB. With the addition of Panavision, this was the first widescreen epic Bond film and the first to have a truly larger-than-life feel that just about every Bond film since has had. Yet unlike many later films, this manages to be faithful to the Ian Fleming book. Sean Connery gives his best performance as Bond in this one, his confidence and comfort in the role is at a zenith yet he's not yet bored with the role as he would later appear in YOLT. All of TB's women are amazing with Domino and Fiona the best Connery-era Bond girls. Domino is great as a "bird with her wing down". Fiona puts all other Bond villainess to shame by comparison and the onscreen sparks between her and Bond are incredible. I also enjoy how Largo foreshadows such villains as Scaramanga, 006 and Graves by not being an armchair villain but by being one who fights alongside his men. Terence Young gives the film a classic touch and "feel" that makes the written words of Fleming just come alive. I particularly like the casino scene. It just epitomizes Bond-era "coolness". The pre-title sequence is also the best one of the 1960s.

All in all, TB is a Bond cinematic masterpiece.

I still stand by those words.

I picked You Only Live Twice because it's the closest Connery got to being in an epic, outrageous Moore-type Bond film.

I think that Thunderball was THE epic Connery film, just like Moore's epic was Moonraker.

Agreed, bryonalston. There's just something about an actor's 4th Bond film. They attain a superconfidence level that usually spills over into the production. And both TB and MR were just such epic fun films. TB's my favorite Connery and MR's my favorite Moore.

The second grab bag of 007 adventures features three Bonds in five films, including the legendary movie that started it all. In 1962 Sean Connery defined the cinematic James Bond as a tough, charming, and thoroughly professional cold war spy with a license to kill in the lean, hard-edged Dr. No. With Ursula Andress (as the original Bond girl Honey Ryder, who makes her entrance in a bikini), Bond battles a renegade supervillain with little more than his wits, his cunning, and his Walther PPK (this was before Q armed him with the coolest toys a superspy ever had). George Lazenby, a handsome Australian model with a self-effacing confidence, made his first and only appearance as James Bond in the underrated On Her Majesty's Secret Service, a witty and action-packed adventure that makes 007 history when Bond marries the girl (the lovely and talented Diana Rigg, fresh from her duties as the butt-kicking spy on the TV series The Avengers). Roger Moore brought a light tone and a suave assurance to the series as the third Bond, and the set features three of his seven appearances. In The Man with the Golden Gun, he battles million-dollar assassin Christopher Lee, one of Bond's most magnetic adversaries. The Spy Who Loved Me, perhaps Moore's finest hour, is a return to the extravagant set pieces and cold war thrills of Connery's pictures and introduces Richard Kiel's steel-dentured Jaws to the series. Jaws returns as a comic figure in Moonraker, a misguided sci-fi entry that takes Bond to space for a physically impressive but dramatically lackluster adventure. More of a mixed bag than the initial seven-film James Bond Gift Set, this set is aimed at the Bond completist rather than the general fan.

It seems the trend is towards FRWL

I'm gonna say Goldfinger, everything about the movie is a bit larger than life of course but it worked really well at the time, was an improvement over TB and had a great theme song. I'll always catch this one whenever it's on.
