I think if Oberhauser turns out to be Blofeld there is both a link to SF and a pathway to a possible filming of the story from You Only Live Twice, minus the title, thusly:
1. Oberhauser is really Blofeld, or assumed the real man's identity;
2. The deaths of Andrew and Monique Bond were not accidental, as assumed;
3. Oberhauser/Blofeld had something to do with their deaths or murdered them himself, as one contributor above has already mentioned.
It bypasses the issue of Bond marrying and losing his wife - involving a remake of OHMSS - whilst providing a link to Mendes' previous Bond film and a plausible reason for Bond to want Blofeld dead - which, it wouldn't surprise me at all, carries the story on into Bond 25.
Of course it may all seem a little bit like Batman and the Joker!

Waltz is a bit young to have been responsible for the death of Bond's parents, no?
Mendes showed a certain sensitivity regarding the death of Bond's parents in Skyfall. I hope he doesn't break with that here just to give Bond's conflict with Blofeld a personal dimension.

Agreed. I'm hoping that the parents won't feature, although a reference to Hannes Oberhauser is hopefully a given.

I'm really hoping that Bond's parents don't feature much at all.  It doesn't seem like, at this point, we'll ever see another straight-up mission.  Bond's past or other personal troubles are pretty much now going to be the basis for the stories moving forward.  That's fine once every other or every third film or so, but now we haven't had a straight-up mission since The Living Daylights was released in 1987.

Craig pretty much confirmed that Waltz is playing Blofeld on BBC News just now.

No surprise there.

Does anyway truly believe that Waltz is NOT playing Blofeld?

I'd say the odds are that Waltz will be Blofeld, but I wouldn't put it past them to pull a switch and have Bellucci revealed as Blofeld either.

Are they bringing him back?  I didn't see anything about it.

It'll be interesting if Christensen is still playing him, if he does return, after all the things he had to say about his experience the last time around.

He´s the best. Someone even asks him if he didn´t trow Blofeld down a chimney ;)

Just suppose no one in this film is Blofeld? That the whole Bond-v-Blofeld business is held over until Bond 25? Consider;

1) The films did without him as a recognisable character - beyond the voice, the back of head and the hands fondling the cat - until YOLT.

2) Just suppose the film did the equivalent in 2015? The SPECTRE underlings wouldn't even have to meet "Number 1" - all the orders, and the punishments, could be administered online. (Imagine a minor SPECTRE villain, having screwed up, being bumped off by booby trapped tablet, mobile or iPhone.)

Just another thought.

I always preferred Blofeld as a voice, and for a while (around 2002 time), the FRWL Blofeld actually topped polls about fan's favourite Bond baddie.

For me it was the fear he instilled in Kronsteen and Klebb. The look on their faces was pure dread, and they were evil masterminds themselves!

In all seriousness, though, I'd be down for a Moore cameo. Maybe similar to the guy in all his movies who sees weird things while drinking!

Sir Roger as the Cat? I love it!!

If nothing else there has to be a white cat in this film. Or, maybe if the big bad is female, a black cat...?

Yes, I know you've always been the elder statesman of Bond fandom, no doubt about it. The only true keeper of the faith who takes it all so damn serious that he completely forgot that there has ever been a fun side to it. Personally, I couldn't care less wether they bring back Blofeld or Luigi Ferrara. But I don't see anything wrong in discussing the whole subject. But of course, Mr. glidrose doesn't like the idea, that's why it's all just stupid fanboy stuff which doesn't sell more tickets

Oh, and thanks for mocking me up for getting something wrong in the English language. Shows your arrogance perfectly well. Lesson learned, thankyouverymuch. And to return the favor, here's your chance to learn something, too: in my language, it has got seven letters.

Whoa, calm down. You're taking this more personally than was intended. First off, I wasn't mocking you for getting "something wrong" in the English language. So far as I can tell, you didn't get anything wrong in the English language. I was merely engaging in some word play on the expression "high horse". Get it?

Why do I get the feeling that this same expression also has seven letters in English? :D F___ y__. Am I close? :D Here let me buy you a beer.

And for the record I care very deeply that they bring back Luigi. I won't rest until the world enjoys a rebooted Luigi.

Cool, I could get use to it. Don't know why they had to use a photo with QT in it though.

Maybe he's the rebooted Jaws. Certainly got the looks.

They ought to just have Roger Moore play Blofeld.  As much as I'm against former Bonds returning to the franchise in other roles, imagine how funny it would be if they spent a film or two with Blofeld simply being a voice only for the chair to turn around and it's revealed that it's Roger Moore stroking a white cat.  ;)

It's quite possible of course, that he won't be named "Blofeld" in the movie, but simply "Number 1"

I think Waltz will be spectacular in the role. We know he can act, for starters. I think he could be an amalgamation of all the best aspects we've seen in the films so far. The smug, elitist of Gray. He also resembles him the most. The total fear Blofeld's voice inspires in FRWL, and also Thunderball. Perhaps a mix of gangster/supervillain from both Telly and Donald.

I think that we can all rest assured that however Blofeld meets his demise in the film, it WON'T be by being bumped very gently against the side of a building in a bath-o-sub by Bond in a crane!! :P

No. There's so many exciting future possibilities. A sword fight to the death and finally a strangulation. The Question Room is begging to be used as well.

Just another thought.

I've considered this possibility, but there are a couple things that make me doubt it.

First, calling the movie SPECTRE is essentially making that organization's return the primary selling point. And though Blofeld operated in the shadows in several of the early films to feature SPECTRE, it's unlikely they would make such hoopla about bringing the group back without including its leader in a big way. If you'll pardon the comparison, I'd liken it to making a new Friday the 13th movie - no matter how much the filmmakers would like to start over with Jason's mother or pull some sort of surprise twist, it simply won't work for most audience members if Jason Voorhees doesn't take center stage.

Second, if it's really true that John Logan initially intended to write a two-part story for 24 and 25 but that plan was scrapped when Mendes came back on board, it's very likely the decision would have been made then to tie at least a temporary bow on the SPECTRE narrative in the next film. That would mean not knowing for sure whether they'll revisit the organization any time soon, and that uncertainty would likely prompt them to go with more Blofeld rather than less. Certainly Sam Mendes wouldn't want to direct a SPECTRE-based movie without getting to put his stamp on 007's most iconic adversary. And he can hardly do that if Blofeld only makes a faceless cameo or two.

Interesting. There is a lot of speculation in that article but I don't think they are trying to remake the old movies. Sam Mendes doesn't want to make another Thunderball. He wants to make an excellent movie.

I would sincerely hope that Waltz has more screen time than Silva.  I don't think that they should go two films in a row where the villain doesn't even show up in the first half of the film.

That would be like The World Is Not Enough and having Elektra King be the true villain while Renard is just a pawn.. Don't think I want that happening again.

I don't either, but I could see Mendes and company doing it because it would seem like a real "clever" thing to do.

Plus, Mendes has already shown that he's willing to revisit ideas presented in The World is Not Enough.

I don´t think they would do it, having Waltz in the ensemble.

Then again, if the character were re-booted as a woman - Monica Belucci would be the most attractive Blofeld yet.

But really, I don´t think EON would go for that.  They know that the press would jump on it, comparing Barbara Broccoli with a female Blofeld etc.

Nah, it will either be Waltz or...

... someone else completely who, of course, has not been revealed yet.

Because that would be the real surprise.  And why would they want to come out with that during the first photocall?
