I thought Lazenby did this perfectly. OHMSS is really an amazing movie and for the life of me I'll never understand why it's so disliked.
The one thing I did hate about this scene is the way the Bond theme plays right after. Whose brilliant idea was that? I always thought it incredibly obvious that "We Have All The Time In The World" should play during the end credits. I guess it was just a reminder that this was a Bond movie.

Couldn't have said it better myself. They could have played a really pretty instrumental version of "We Have All The Time In The World", and then it would have been absolutely perfect. I too think he handled the scene quite well. I love everything about that moment; it's definitely the tender side of Bond that we don't always get to see. Frankly, I don't think Sean Connery would have been any more impressive there.

I agree, I don't think anyone could have done it better than George Lazenby.

True, Timothy Dalton would probably make it work too. But he thought that he was too young for the part, I guess decisions like that make him a devoted actor.

I always say to people to imagine that scene played by Sean. Would not work, at all, maybe it would have to be scrapped altogether and just have her dead. OHMSS is my favorite in the series and every time I watch it, it reveals itself more for the genius it is, oh and for Laz' subtlety.

I think he would have performed it easily, i mean he's an amazing actor.

But i think it wouldn't fit regarding his previous Bond performances.

I think Craig DID do it better. In CASINO ROYALE.

Not that Laz's performance was terrible.

There.

Can two different films from two different eras really be compared side by side?

Only with difficulty, and sometimes not at all. But I'm only comparing two different, but narratively specific, performances. Not two different films entire.

Both Bonds are holding their dead first true loves in their hands (I don't see Laz's Bond has having first gone through his Vesper - Tracy is the first). Granted, their love stories are different, and their loves are different people, but I think there's still oodles of common ground there to make a comparison.

I would agree with him. Having seen him in the Lion in Winter, his voice was very Brosnan, not commanding or anything, very light and playful. He also had a bit of a baby face.
