I agree Loomis--though you may if you do through all the films find a number Bond traditions not there.  There is a lot of them you know.

Yes. And, David, I agree with your points, particularly the point that LIVE AND LET DIE is more of a reboot than GOLDENEYE.

I guess the wider point I'm trying to make is that Bond has been pretty heavily rebooted and stripped of various "essential" elements before, so there's no point in anyone crying sacrilege over rumours of change in CASINO ROYALE (e.g. no dinner jacket, no Moneypenny).

We've been here before. Several times. Indeed, the makers of CR may for reasons of hype even talk up the radical rebranding of Bond in their film, but it doesn't look as though they'll really be doing anything that hasn't been done before in the series (with, as I say, the possible exception of dialogue clearly stating that Bond is a beginner).

When big events occur you always see the tux out as a rule or something really fancy or swank. Not everyone but a lot do this including the so called "cool" of today.

I think the main brand they don't have is the actor. Dalton and Lazenby were not seen as being Bond by the public before they were cast - Moore and especially Brosnan were. In Brosnan's case, he brought a level of branding to GOLDENEYE far beyond a tuxedo: he was seen by most people as being James Bond long before the film came out - in almost any film or advert he was in. Craig is in the Dalton and Lazenby camp: nobody saw him as Bond before he was cast. He also doesn't really look like the public's image of James Bond: whatever you think of their performances, Dalton and Lazenby certainly did.

I think all of this is much more important than whether or not he wears a tuxedo. It's also, of course, deliberate.

It's a massive gamble. But I think they're betting wisely.

Right, bollocks to all this - just sent an email to Steve Wright in the afternoon asking him to ask Daniel Craig if the rumour is true when he interviews him this afternoon.

See if he does and what he has to say. I'm out shortly so if anyone hears, let us know!

As there have been Bond films that did not include the tux, I don't think the filmmakers are setting a very dangerous precedent. Wearing formal evening clothes does not seem to fit in with poker as much as it would if Bond was playing Baccarat. This could be an effort to try and make Bond more appealing to a modern audience. It's not as though Craig will not be wearing expensive suits. I think there probably will be one scene with Craig in a tux, even if its only for the opening gun barrel shot.

Yes, I think this will be a far 'cooler', 'edgier' Bond film. I think they will aim more for the kind of film that LOCK STOCK AND TWO SMOKING BARRELS was in its day. LAYER CAKE. More the remake of ALFIE than YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE. I think they're also going for a film that will stand up on its own two feet, as well. It's a bit more radical than making M a woman, sure. But as we've all been moaning about how rubbish DAD was for the past three years and saying how it's time they got with it, I think it's a bit daft to pick every single decision apart. Before the film has been made.

Sorry. Forgot. It's the interweb.

I have always maintained that the best way for Craig to carry this off is for him to just himself. Don

Today people don't wear dinner jackets in casino's you know...it looks old fashioned and a bit odd.

Do you think James Bond visit the same casinos as you and me...? I mean, will a tux look out of place here (Caesars Palace):

Look at the black guy he is not in a tux and look at the waiter he is in a tux. So is Bond the gambler or the waiter? Kidding.............no a tux wouldn't look out of place but it is not necessary. A tux is very old fashion.

That's the kind of style I'm going for - that sort of George Clooney in OCEAN'S TWELVE ultra-cool, contemporary style vibe. A sort of carefree cool look. Great stuff.

Yeah that's a great look, don't mind if he isn't in black tie if he will be in a casual suit and look cool like this picture and like in Layer Cake. I guess being in Bahamas as well he will ewar similar outfits to the ones in Layer Cake, and in GoldenEye when Bond got to the dish.

That's exactly what I had in mind. There's something about Craig that reminds me of Kevin Costner in the Bodyguard. He strikes me as a low maintenance man who doesn't have time for fancy suits, yet whom at the same time doesn't want to look like a bum. He would be the kind of guy who hates fancy things but whom at the same time knows that he had better look at least half presentable because the boss demands it. So he does what he has to do to get by. He would be the sort of man who would scoff at the kind of guy who takes his fashion sense from GQ.

Actually it kind of is, if you read Fleming's books Bond talks of his first expensive tailor, suggesting usually he has used a cheaper tailor. He dresses in rather average clothes for the time just with the touch of tailored class and particular individual preference. He doesn't wear really expensive gear all the time and he wears a tux sometimes because back then you HAD to wear one to get into a few places Bond went.

Often in the books he wears trousers, shirt and loafers (he hates shoe laces). He is often very casual, and in the 50's 60's that was the equivalent today of chinos, loafers and a casual shirt or something. Not at all fancy or really expensive. Back then suits were what everyone wore as everyday attire.
