First off, wonderful rant. How true.

Secondly, copyrights are being extended, and extended, and extended due to companies like Disney who don't want to see a world where Walt's frozen head doesn't get a penny everytime someone shows 'Steamboat Willie' on TV. The idea of copyright is not to prevent the public from getting access to media, but some people wish to interpret it that way--going so far as to make public libraries lease books.

Glidrose has taken this same stance because as long as the Bond films come out, they want to be able to sell books alongside the film. If the continuation novels are stopped, their copyright will expire and anyone will be able to publish them in the public domain.

So this explains Glidrose's bad business strategy: work each successive author until he runs dry of ideas.

I seem to have already written about the Zakhov book on this forum. Anyway, to whom it may concern. There's a thorough coverage of this book (made by me) at www.007forever.com Mind you, the exact title (of the Russian edition) is "Avakoum Zakhov vs 07" (not 007!) And the name of James Bond is never mentioned there. There's a certain British spy, though, and his number is 07. And he is a bad guy. But any Bond fan, having read this book, would tell you that 07 is NOT 007. And the book is just a poor attempt to disgrace the British icon of the XXth century.

Who knows how Glidrose works. I read an interview with Kingsley Amis about 20 years ago. He apparently wrote a Bond book with Bond as a young man in the Navy (kind of a prequel if you like) and when he showed it to Glidrose they apparently told him that if he ever showed the novel to anyone they would haul him into court.

Sigh, not even remotely true. Amis pitched an idea to Glidrose over drinks one day that would have seen an elderly Bond brought out of retirement. Bond apparently falls to his death atop a waterfall a la Sherlock Holmes while fighting the villain and so dies. Amis claims that the Glidrose directors blanched at that punch line and told him not to bother writing it.

Elsewhere our own "ACE" reported that the "Reichenbach Falls" short story Amis relates in his wonderful Bondage #13 interview with Raymond Benson was very much tongue-in-cheek. It was not meant to be a serious attempt at a Bond short story.

Wow. This disagreement is spanning more than a decade between ripostes. I'm going to have to remember to look out for DLibrasnow's response in June 2023

Why revive a thread that has no relevance anymore? The handling of the lit Bond has come a long way since 2003. If you have a new point, start a new thread.
