Here is my list ranked in preference of the films featuring the greatest James Bond ever!

1) The Spy Who Loved Me

2) Moonraker

3) Live And Let Die

4) A View To A Kill

5) The Man With The Golden Gun

6) For Your Eyes Only

7) Octopussy

I must add that I too do not understand the hate some people seem to have for AVTAK. Some people even rank it lower than Diamonds Are Forever and Die Another Day in the series as a whole and that I will never understand. AVTAK has a great villain (Christopher Walken is just at his best in it), great plot and some great action sequences. I personally think it was a fitting farewell to the wonderful Moore era of Bond films.

I enjoy your list quite a lot. I like that you like The Spy Who Loved Me as much as I did because I adored that one. I am not sure I agree with how you feel about A View to A Kill because the last time I watched that, I just remember that not being that good. I do want to watch it for old time sake and see how I feel about it. I think your placement though with the other Bond films is very fitting.

The Spy Who Loved Me has long been the favourite Moore film in our house.  My wife, always rating Moore as her favourite Bond, also rates TSWLM as her favourite Bond film.

As for me... well, it's a close call between this and Live and Let Die.  But it still wins by just a whisker because LALD is not as true to the excellent book as it could have been.

I'll also add For Your Eyes Only for an equal honourable mention in dispatches.

Octopussy is my favourite, but Moonraker is nearly perfect in what it sets out to do, and Live & Let Die is great too; shame about Dubya Pepper though, without his incongruous appearance the film would make my top 5 Bonds.  I find Spy a tad overrated; while the opening scene (and entire first half) is superb, the tone is uneven at times (veering jarringly from breeziness to brutality) and I lose interest with the film once they arrive at Stromberg's lair for the gratuitously extended climax, which feels to me like a war film has been clumsily stitched onto an entertaining Spy caper.

Spy remains my favourite from the Moore era, and I still think it's his trademark outing. However Moonraker is close on its heels.

Had to mention it's been a year since we lost Richard Kiel. Sad times. And I think, in 'SPECTRE', with Mr Hinx we may well get a henchman as vicious as Jaws hopefully.

I've found that Roger Moore has ended up being split into two sections for me. There's the incarnation that I completely adore, which is Live and Let Die to Moonraker, where Moore is on full form and, despite the quality of the films themselves, gives 4 really strong performances. Moonraker he's on very fine form, very comfortable in the role and enjoyable to watch, Same with Spy!

Then there's his final three. For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy and A View To A Kill, where he arguably sticks out like a sore thumb. He just doesn't belong in those final three films (Despite liking Octopussy), I just think its safe to say that he hung around for a bit too long. If Moonraker was his last then I would've been completely fine with it. His style of Bond just doesn't tailor what they were going for. Especially with For Your Eyes Only. It's no secret that he was supposed to leave in 1979 and was brought back last minute in 1981. Which is why For Your Eyes Only, Octopussy and A View to A Kill remain really strange films for me. They needed to take a massive change of direction after how crazy Moonraker ended up and bringing back Moore sorta defeats the point. Give me For Your Eyes Only as Daltons debut anyday. (Imagine a Dalton/Walken/Jones central A View To A Kill, too! Daltons Bond and May Day. Now that would've been very interesting indeed. )

I voted AVTAK even though I think FYEO is the better film there is just something about AVTAK that entertains me. Probably Tidbit.

As I've posted before if an actor did 3 or more films, the 3rd was normally his best.

Goldfinger/Sir Sean  The blue print for the series.

Pierce/TWINE A PTS to rival Goldfinger and the lover has to be the killer.  "I never miss"  BANG!

Sir Roger/ SWLM  no CGI parachute, his humor combined with 007's killer instinct and his sensitive side (He could have killed Anya with his stare when she mentioned Tracy)and the best he ever looked in a tux.

Does anyone know if they made a life size figure of Roger Moore for TMWTGG? Or was it always just Moore?

I's always assumed that it was Moore himself

The Spy Who Loved Me was by far Roger's most entertaining Bond for me and it has kind of wormed into being my favorite. Certainly it was Moore at his peak as 007. To be fair, it was also my first Bond (I was, I think, 12) so that may affect my judgement of it a bit.

That said, even a few years ago I would have said For Your Eyes Only since I loved the return to a more grounded spy story after the epic adventures of TSWLM and MR but a rewatch reminded me of some of its weaknesses, bumping TSWLM back to the top. So those two on top. Not sure how I'd rank the rest.

I have a hankering to do a rewatch of the Moore era but I'm also badly behind on my Bond watching (haven't seen any Craig yet) so should be concentrating on more recent stuff.

1-FYEO (strangely, didn't like it first time I saw it)

2-TSWLM (my first Bond)

3-OP (even Ted gave this a shoutout.  Some still can't believe a Bond movie's called 'Octopussy')

4-LALD (not aging well.  likely to fall.  But Solitaire ... Mmmmm)

5-MR (beautifully shot, Moore's witticisms are ribald, lovely score)

6-AVTAK (MR would have been a more fitting ending for Rog.  Instead, he's spied on in a shower)

7-TMWTGG (he's miscast in a Connery movie.  Serious tone doesn't mesh with JW.  "Goodnight, sir!")

78/79-81 was probably the period when his movie career was at it's height. He made a string of movies (Wild Geese, Sea Wolves, Cannonball Run, Escape to Athena- plus the Bond films of course). By the time you add in the promotional duties and travellng, that is quite an undertaking. No wonder he aged.

Look at what a decade of Bond has done to Daniel Craig!

1. TSWLM (First Bond I saw at the cinema)

2. LALD (Moore is great. The soundtrack is fantastic. The stunts are still wonderful)

3. OP ( The first film I ever rented on VHS!)

4. TMWTGG ( Christopher Lee makes up for a lot of the film's shortcomings)

5.FYEO ( Yes it's a welcome to return to earth after MR, and Julian Glover is good, but the underwater and climbing scenes drag a bit and Carole Bouquet is a bit wooden)

6.MR ( "Let's re-hash TSWLM")

7.AVTAK ( An ageing star and co-star (Patrick Macnee). A grating leading lady, plus Grace Jones who really can't act very well., plus a director who was doing his 3rd one in 4 years. Christopher Walken is fun , but it was time for a change by this stage)

Somehow I´m absolutely in a Sir Roger mood - so here I go (again?):

1.  TSWLM (First Bond for me, too - and still a defining moment for me and my idea of a perfect Bond)

2.  LALD (Moore is excellent in a film that was more courageous than any other reboot in the series because it took chances with everything)

3.  MR (Moore sells the serious - the aftermath of the centrifuge - and the outrageous - space canon - without overacting or sulking and proves what an extraordinary and underrated actor he is)

4.  TMWTGG (A serious Moore, years before FYEO - and who else could withstand Pepper and NickNack without looking like a fool?)

4.  OP (Moore shows his age and still perfect timing)

5.  FYEO (While the film is more of a collection of great and not so great setpieces, Moore is the perfect center and proves that he does not have to rely on comedy to be a fantastic Bond)

6.  AVTAK (Yes, an old Bond with many tired sequences... but Moore still sells it very well.  Although...  that backgammon round should have gone to Cubby already after OP)

Octopussy. And it's not just my favourite Roger Moore Bond film either. It's my favourite film EVER!

Not for any sentimental reasons, though, just for the film itself. I think it's a terrific, rip-roaring light-hearted adventure.

Absolutely. Octopussy is good fun, and in my opinion, deserves to be held in higher regard.

It´s weird - when OP was first released I liked it but did not love it.  For years that opinion never changed.

But during my re-watch sessions last year I was blown away at how much fun this movie is.  Now, it´s one of my favourites.

While my opinions of other movies, of course, also change the older I get, the Bond films are particularly "vulnerable" to my moods (apart from the top three which remains the same).  But even those I don´t prefer at one time can win me over again because I manage to find things in them that I seem to have overlooked or ignored.  OP is definitely one of those comeback kids for me.

Octopussy is and has always been in my top four Bond movies (the other three are FRWL, TLD, and CR). It's pure escapist Bond, and incorporates the best aspects of the character. Each time I watch it, I am reminded of why I love this series so much. In many ways, I view Octopussy as the ultimate "greatest hits" Bond movie inasmuch as I think it does the perfect job of conveying (in one movie) what Bond is all about.

And despite the film's reputation as being campy, I actually think Moore does a great job with some of the serious scenes, such as confronting Orlov on the train and the subsequent bomb scene in his clown outfit. These scenes, especially when viewed alongside the serious scenes in TSWLM (admitting to having killed Anya's lover) and FYEO (warning Melina about the dangers of personal vendettas) really highlight what a phenomenal actor Moore is. It's a shame that these aspects of his character are often overlooked when discussing Moore's Bond.

Moore gets his own version of Little Nellie, the acrostar mini jet. And he also gets his own version of Oddjob. Gobinda crushes dice instead of golf balls. I just think Octopussy is a solid representation of what the Moore era was all about. Large scale adventure and fun. Union Jack hot air balloons - just as Moore had the Union Jack parachute in TSWLM. Fighting on the top of flying planes, driving cars along railway lines and fighting on top of speeding trains. It's cinematic stuff.

Moore is the Bond I go to for total comfort. Nothing too complex, always a warm and welcome formula for a Bond adventure and great iconography in all films, plus his passion for the role and the series oozes off the camera evidently.

For me, it's 'AVTAK' #1 all the time. Love the story, love the action and love the villain. And the title song.

:)
