I thought I'd start a thread for fans of SPECTRE. There are plenty of threads on here with criticism which is fine but this is a place for those who love the movie, and not for those who hate it. Let's celebrate all the good things here, including things you've picked up from repeat viewings, and some time to reflect.

 

The gunbarrel is back, and the opening shot is amazing - indeed the PTS is up there with the best, and is visually stunning. The chase through the crowds to the helicopter reminds me of Thunderball.

 

Q Lab - love Bond playing with the gun.

 

Rome - beautifully shot, great to have Monica Bellucci in a Bond movie. I enjoyed the fact that at the SPECTRE meeting, we see the actor Clem So (who appeared briefly in Skyfall) and whose brother was in the card game in Casino Royale!! SPECTRE twins??

 

Mr White and then Madeleine are great, and we transition from Austria to Morocco nicely. It's great to see a villain's lair again, and while the ending is lacklustre, it's better than Skyfall's final half hour.

Glad you've started this topic. Personally, for me I thought the cinematography was beautiful, and the pacing of the movie great. 

 

But, for me the Seydoux was the best part. Her acting skills took Madeleine's character and relationship with Bond to another level. Yes, I'll admit she wasn't given the greatest length of time to develop the relationship with Bond but she did the best with what she was given. When I first heard of her casting, I was shocked as I thought I wouldn't be able to get passed her character in 'Blue is the warmest colour', but she surpassed my expectations. 

 

Rome car chase scene - loved this, and the soundtrack to go with the chase scene worked very well. As did the telephone conversation with Moneypenny - liked the fact we got to see behind the scenes of her life. I'm sure the only other time we've had a glimpse of Moneypenny's life was in GoldenEye when she was called in from her date??

 

My favourite parts of SPECTRE were indeed the parts that heavily featured Madeleine. The whole of Austria; clinic, plane/car chase etc. That chase actually reminded me of Bond chasing Natalya in the Tank in GoldenEye also - for me there are a lot of similarities between the two films (http://debrief.comma...eneye-spoilers/) 

 

The villains lair was a great scene for me as it helped affirm Bond and Madeleine's relationship, and Waltz got the chance to demonstrate his menace once again. Plus I liked the whitewashed torture room, shows how clinical Blofeld is.

While it wasn't everyone's cup of tea, I think Spectre did a fine job of being it's own movie. I love Spectre because like Casino Royale it brought back the feel of the FRWL/Thunderball eras, yet going against the grain of the traditional Bond formula at the same time.

One segment I really enjoy from SPECTRE is the polite charade at the desert lair. "Well, it's a pleasure to be here." Placing the pistol on the tray, and later being offered champagne. This style of hero/villain interaction is one of my favourite elements of the franchise, and I was pleasantly surprised the filmmakers returned to it.

Yes! Glad you mentioned this. I missed the pleasantries the villains show to Bond. It's as if they appreciate his etiquette and class, and want to demonstrate that they understand this, and are just as capable of mingling within a fine environment.

THANK YOU for creating this thread, DaveBond!    Indeed I was getting pretty tired and overwhelmed by all the negativity that I've not even bothered to go in most of the discussion threads on SPECTRE.. It's good to have a place of solitude and positive vibes! One of the best things about SPECTRE for me is that they very successfully brought back a lot the classic Bond humor and witty one-liners without going over the top and getting into groan-worthy territory..i.e. "Saved by the bell!" from DAD or "He was buried with work!" in TWINE. Love Bond pushing the little blue Fiat along with the Aston during the Rome car chase and the poor fellow behind the wheel who gets a face full of air-bag, all perfectly timed with the music! The banter with Q at the bar at the Hofner clinic, the exchanges with Moneypenny, especially when Bond finds out she has someone over for a slumber party...just great little touches! It is my hope that as time progresses and that after Bond 25 comes out, some of those folks who initially dismissed and disliked SPECTRE will give it another chance and start to warm up to it more. It could be, and I do hope this ISN'T the case, that the next film, no matter if it is Daniel Craig or a newcomer, could be so awful that the naysayers about SPECTRE could have a change of heart..lol!

No problem, Dove! I agree, we need somewhere to get away from all the criticism.

 

It's a great Bond movie. I love all of them and this one is always going to be great to watch.

 

Some of the dialogue is great. You know I actually attribute alot of this to Purvis & Wade; they were brought on board to fix the script and I think they did it. Alot of the humour is consistent with what we've seen before from them.

I came out of Spectre convinced that I liked it more than Skyfall, and that EON was finally getting back on track.

 

Then I find out from other posters everything that's wrong with it, ITHOs.

 

I'm tired of everyone else's HOs. I'll stick to my own appreciation for what worked, and keep my own nit-picking to myself.

I am still a huge fan of the entire Mexico-pts, I found it nice how the Craig era picked up Blofeld with a nod to the last time we've seen him in FYEO. For a moment there I expected we'd see an observer on top of one of the highrise buildings...

Thomas Newman is my second favourite composer in the franchise. Donna Lucia captures the melancholy luxury of the Bond universe perfectly. Silver Wraith is mysterious and with a memorable melody. I could go on and describe the other cues, but needless to say, I'm a big fan of the soundtrack.

I love Newman´s work, too.  For SKYFALL and SPECTRE.  He really reinterpreted the classic Bond sound through his own style, and that´s what I think is needed with a contemporary Bond film.

 

While I enjoyed Arnold´s work on TND, CR and QOS, I believe that Newman really went one step further.

I liked this as well! Madeleine knew full well she was capable of handling a fire-arm but test's Bond's trust and confidence, and pushes the boundaries with him.

Yes, one of my favourite bits here, too.  The whole Bond-Lucia interaction is very well written.

 

Also, Bond´s reply to Madeleine´s question about his profession:  "Not the sort of thing that looks good on a form..."

Great, indeed. On the acting side of things, when Lucia asks Bond if he can't see she's in grief, I enjoy the insolent tone of his answer. "No," as in "I don't believe you for one second."

Yes!  This "No" is wonderfully delivered by Craig, actually in a very playful, sardonic way that has not been asked of him enough during his tenure.

Just watched Spectre again, after deciding to ignore the critics and nit-pickers (are you there, Jim?)

 

It's a young wine, but it's improving with age.
