Haha, nice one RMc2. I can't quote on this computer for some reason. Love Fury Road. I would to see a Bona ala Fury Road/Miller style. Agree though, it would be totally unpredictable (which would be a good thing these days).

They want Craig back - but if the grosses ultimately disappoint and Craig wants to bow out after all, then - and only then - I could imagine BOND 25 being delayed to 2018, due to the search and the establishing of a new actor.

If Craig comes back, Mendes will be lured back as well.  And then it´s a question of how fast they can agree on a script.  The new distributor will want to play it safe and see returns as fast as possible.

I don't agree that Craig returning stipulates that Mendes will return.  I don't think Craig will "walk" without him.

And I think 3 years is going to start become something of a norm with the series, regardless of Craig.  I agree with those who've said that recasting the lead role would push production back further than 3 years.

Didn't know George Miller is Australian.  That changes things.  He's riding high with "Mad Max: Fury Road" but apparently is already lined up for the recently announced sequel, the release date for which has not been set and may very well directly conflict with the Bond schedule.  But given MM: FR's success, it's certainly another name for the shortlist.

George Miller won´t be on the shortlist.  And he´s not riding high with "Fury Road" at all.  While critics swooned over it, the film is not considered a blockbuster success, having trouble making back its gigantic production costs.

Also, it was an insanely difficult and time-consuming production.  That´s something EON can´t risk on a Bond film which in itself is demanding enough.

It´s not the Bond licence that goes on sale.  The open question is only: which new distributor will MGM choose for its entire slate, and Bond films are only one part of that (albeit a big part).

Since Wilson mentioned that the decision will be made in January or February 2016, they could move on BOND 25 very quickly.

A longer development process actually does not yield better results, only more time for more people to interfere.

I´m sure that EON - despite Wilson´s denials - has very firm ideas on how to proceed, probably with Purvis & Wade already secretly writing a treatment (or having written it).

They will look at the grosses of SPECTRE, of course, and then sort out which way to go.

I totally agree with you.

There's no way that George Miller will be considered. His only non-Mad Max directorial efforts since 1992's Lorenzo's Oil are the Happy Feet films and Babe: Pig in the City. He's just not the kind of director that EON would or should be looking at, especially since it's not as though Mad Max: Fury Road lit the box office on fire relative to the money it took to make the film.

Two things of interest to note in this thread's conversation:

1-Fury Road is more critically acclaimed than SPECTRE, but SPECTRE's box office is outgrossing Mad Max.

2-Happy Feet beat Casino Royale for #1 in the box office on opening weekend.

In short, George Miller should be hired, but won't be.

Miller would be a bold, wonderful choice, but he won't be in the running.

I expect Bond 25 to be released in November 2018.

Sometimes I think it would be nice to have a new Bond movie every 2 years, but I would prefer quality over quantity.

George Miller is in his 70s. If we're going old, I'd rather see Campbell return.

What's stunning to me is that the actual filmmakers pulled SPECTRE together in just 12 months. It's the script that took an ungodly two years. Logan is toast!

So a 2017 Bond is eminently doable, provided Craig is happy to have one less year to sit around smoking PRIMO WEED.

really, SPECTRE should have been a 2014 release. They had momentum after Skyfall and possibly left it a little late to capitalize.

Selfishly, I want every Bond ASAP because I'm not getting any younger!

If they had an in house director again (John Glen, Guy Hamilton, Lewis Gilbert) and a dedicated scriptwriter (Richard Maibaum), two year cycles are doable.  But with recruiting different directors every time since 1995 (the Mendes exception noted), three to four years is more likely.  They could also do two and a half, but I think Bond summer releases are a thing of the past in today's movie climate.

Miller is probably the most sought after director of the moment (rightfully so) so i highly doubt Eon could snag him for B25, as much as i'd bet they'd love to. They know that the media would whip up a press and fan frenzy if the Fury Road maestro was helming Craig's Bond swansong.

Also, Craig now seems to have a lot of sway in the creative decisions and what actor worth their salt doesn't want to work with Miller right now?

But, with Man of Steel 2, Mad Max 5 & 6, and possibly Justice League slated for Miller, it's highly unlikely he'll be available for some time.

As a long (looooong) time Miller fan i'd love to see his take on Bond, so i'll keep my fingers crossed for him one day directing Hardy as Bond.

Btw, Hardy has worked with my 3 top personal wish list Bond directors; Miller, Nolan and Winding-Refn, so if he ever were Bond (unlikely given his age) i'd hope he'd rope in those 3 talents to direct him.

I would like to see a 2017 release date purely for selfish reasons, and I find it hard to wait so long between films. But, as others have mentioned Bond 25 would benefit greatly from a 2018 release date. Plus when we have had to wait 3 years for the next film there is an exciting hubbub around the new release that I think we miss if it's a quick production.

I'm catching up. Re: what did Butterworth do for the SPECTRE script?

Per the Sony hacks, on a Dec. 1, 2014, draft, an email said Purvis & Wade were revising the third act while Butterworth was rewriting the first two acts.

Thanks for doing this research. Now the film has been seen by all, this stuff is very interesting indeed.

To my mind this makes info so much Sense. I love SPECTRE until the 3rd act, which is a strangely 2-part 3rd act. What would traditionally be a story's epilogue - the London stuff - is unnesisarilly expanded beyond credulity (yes, even Bond movies need some credulity).

All the Spooks stuff with the 'Team MI:6'

Running around and the god awful MI6 demolition plot; lucky for Bond Swann just happened to be in the room right next to him when he reached the top!

Without any foreshadow Bond can break out of his 'plastic-cuffs' that his presumably trained captors thought should hold him...

Bond's cheeso-rama final chance bullet manages to take down Blofeld's helicopter (he may as well said "Smile you son of a bitch." Like Roy Scheider in Jaws' finale...

The stilted acting of all involved in the final Blofeld/Bond mano-a mano scene on Westminster Bridge - so ill-concieved that even Waltz seemed unsure of just how to play it....

The first 2 acts of SPECTRE aren't an example of great plotting (though not nearly as contrived as SF's Dark Knight rip-off), but the 3rd act takes the biscuit, pushing it's plotting liberties into Damon Lindelof territory (Lost, Star Trek Into Parody, Prometheus). Like these 3 scripting tragedies the 3rd act of SPECTRE felt like a lot of ideas and themes thrown into a pot and hope for the best. It felt as lazily written as one of the latter Brossa movies.

Though so much has been right in the Craig era, the 3rd act of SPECTRE (the London stuff) has all the staples of misguided tone and contrived plotting that has inexplicably popped up in Craig's movies like the ghost of the Brossa era. Your info on P&W's involvement in this 3rd act alone would put the blame squarely on their shoulders.

A couple of friends have suggested that SPECTRE would've been a whole better if it had simply ended with the crater destruction finale. I feel it did need an epilogue to put us on the road to Bond 25 and the inevitable return of Blofeld, having escaped the crater. But in liue of a 3rd act that worked, yes i'd agree that SPECTRE would be a better movie if it ended with the crater destruction and Blofed's escape.

So, it´s February 2016 - and the Berlin Film Festival is about to begin.  Might this be an opportunity to place the news about Bond´s new distributor?

Wilson said the decision would probably be made in January or February.

The pessimist in me wants to say that finding a new distributor will take longer than MGW predicted, causing another gap of (at least) four years until Bond 25 is released. Bye, Craig.

The optimist in me wants to say that they've already found one, who have only agreed to distribute on the condition that Craig does at least two more Bond films, and are willing to provide generous financial incentive to Craig.

I just hope that this doesn't turn into another post-DAD, where we're left with months of nothing more than speculation regarding the future of both the franchise and the current Bond. I am aware that EON do not owe us anything, but I would still appreciate periodic updates when possible.

Exciting! I hope there's an announcement soon.

They're still set to start development on the next Bond in Spring. I'm optimistic they've planned for a delay in confirming a distribution deal, probably building it into the break Craig wants to take before making another Bond.

Although I doubt anyone will give EON the same generous deal they had with Sony, it's too valuable a franchise for anyone to let it simmer in limbo for very long.

It's actually not Eon's deal, it's New-and-better-MGM's. I doubt Eon have much say in it either way, apart from of course a general tendency to work with people they already know and are fond of, like Amy Pascal. The distribution side of affairs goes through the eye of MGM's needle and it became apparent in the past they - MGM - and their temporary partners can have vastly differing opinions from Eon on how to tackle business.

Absolutely.  It´s always been MGM who slammed on the brakes, gambling for more money.  The "product" is not what they are interested in, only the revenue.

As long as February is not over there is a glimmer of hope that Wilson´s statement will remain true.

Then again, Wilson said it in a Q & A, a rather informal event.  And these things change, decisions get delayed, people engage in power plays, the bean counters convince each other that there is even more money to be squeezed out.

The only thing that could be a factor for speeding up the decision is indeed Craig.  If most of those involved want to release the next Bond film with him they cannot wait too long.

I bet it would be Walt Disney Pictures (aka Disney). However, my theory video was published on 8th January on how will Disney getting James Bond instead of Warner Bros in order to distribute the future Bond films as well as reissues. Surely, again, you never know that Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer could struck the deal with The Walt Disney Studios (under the Disney brand). This video may contain spoilers:

I hope so :-)

But i have an email that Disney is understand and quoted to me that: "Your passion for both Disney and Mr. Bond is very clear!". Let's see what they can had?

Disney is not getting the Bond franchise.

That said, if they somehow do get the rights, then I'm through with Bond.  It'll be the easiest walking away from something that I've ever been able to do.  It might even be a good thing for me, as I'll both save money (not having to pay to see a Bond film ever again) as well as make money when I sell off all of my Bond films and other merchandise.

Disney and Bond don´t seem to be a good match - but then again, for me the approach they took to "Star Wars" worked fine.  If they just distribute and boy, they are able to with great ad campaigns, then Disney could actually be a good thing for Bond.

It's not as if there will be that much creative input by the studio, SPECTRE has shown that. They may have ideas but Eon are firmly in charge of most of the actual decisions.

As for proper promotion campaigning, well, there is definitely room for improvement.

Nothing spectacular new here - but at least Gregg Wilson did say they are starting to think about BOND 25:
