From interviews with Mendes, Whishaw etc, it seems that SPECTRE will involve some more gadgety gadgets. So, I was wondering what type of gadgets would fit in with the Craig era style of films, as Q said in Skyfall:-

Q: You expecting an exploding pen? We don't really go in for that any more.

What gadget would you provide with Craig's era Bond?

I'd love to see an exploding pen.

But seriously, yes, it sounds like there are a few gadgets in the Aston Martin, and Q will have something for Bond.

Does this mean we might see the return of scenarios like this:-

Car chase in Rome, Bond and the Bond girl evade the villains using an oil slick out of the back of the Aston.

Bond "Looks like we gave them the slip"

With realism being the key during Craig's era (for the most part), I can see them going for more believable, real gadgets. Though I wouldn't mind an exploding pen or other silly things, provided in small amounts.

I would definitely like to see the DB10 loaded with gadgets of any kind.

I was thinking about this, and maybe the gadgets Bond uses in the field will be more surveillance oriented. Bug detectors and that sort of thing.

I have to point out that, maybe thanks to the James Bond films, gadgets in everyday objects are actually a reality.

This is a waterproof wristwatch with High Resolution(720P) HD Camera - and you can buy one yourself for £95,

A Belt with a GPS tracker.

Looks like Q can give our Bond some gadgets that could be conceivably believable in today's real world - and without being too comical.

It sounded like Sam Mendes was excited about having some gadgets in this one.

I get the feeling that Spectre is going to have a more light-hearted theme, compared to the last three.

Mendes said they are going to have "more mischief", while Daniel said it's going to be "Bigger and Better" than Skyfall.

The bigger and better comments are routine and expected. However the 'more mischief' comments raise my interest. I do like the sound of that.

It's a pity that smoking isn't in anymore. A lighter and cigarettes along with a cigarette case make great gadgets. My favorites were the microfilm reader in TSWLM and the X-ray device in MR.

My Dad (who never smoked) always carried a Zippo. He once told me that every man should carry three things beyond basic keys, wallet and watch. Those being a pen, lighter and a knife.

Pen gadgets have been done to death. I had a great line for the next time Q gave a pen to Bond.

"Q....I've got twenty pens and only one of them actually writes...What makes this one so special?" ;)

The 'more mischief' suggests that SPECTRE could have a more Thunderball-esque to it. But I think outside of that, SPECTRE will continue the explorations into Bond's psyche/past. I don't think SPECTRE will be anymore light-hearted than Skyfall. Craig already basically admitted that the reason for the darker/less humorous tone of the recent films is because of the lambasting that the Bond franchise took from Austin Powers. That, combined with Skyfall's box office gross suggest that we will continue to get darker, not lighter....at least in my opinion.

I love that line.

Given how often the series does an about face -- the longest film, CR, followed by the shortest, QOS; Bond goes to space in MR followed by Bond down to earth in FYEO; the attempt at "serious and humanizing" in TWINE followed by gene replacement and an invisible car in DAD -- I think it's entirely possible we'll get a compensatory overload of gadgets in this one, to make up for their absence up to now in the Craig era.

Thanks for that. He always fought Mom to let me stay up to watch the Bond films even on school nights. He's missed but always remembered.

I've got a list of what items a gent could carry and that would be passed off upon casual inspection. I still like the idea of Bond carrying knives on his forearm or across the small of his back and being skilled in throwing them.

In Neal and Rob's podcast interview for Skyfall (Empire, I think), they mentioned one gadget idea they're quite fond of but haven't been able to include in one of the films as of yet. No clue what it is. Perhaps it will turn up this time?

I'm guessing it has something to do with smoking, but Bond's not allowed to do that anymore. I've got a gem tucked away myself, but with the current trend of health and/or PC, it won't happen.

Seem to remember Pierce taking pride in the fact that he managed to get away with it. Albeit once. And a cigar.

This is more the direction I see things going in. Which is fine by me! Simple and realistic, yet fun.

I had a notion long ago for a pair of cufflinks. One is the bug and the other the earpiece. Short range of course, but could be linked to Bond's phone.

What about an e-cigarette? They are very common nowadays and if Bond is searched and they someone finds one on him, it wouldn't look out of place for him to have a metal, cigarette on him.

Guard: What is this?

Bond: My e-cigarette - I've been trying to give up, terrible habit I know - try it

Guard takes a pull on the cigarette and it blows up in his face

Bond: It certainly packs a punch...

That's a good idea, Bryce. A grounded version of the sonic cufflinks in Everything or Nothing which disabled security cameras.

I think so too. Fine be me, by the way.

As for gadgets - I can do without them. I'd much rather see Bond rely on his flair than gadgets. That's one of the reasons why I like Quantum of Solace. In the hotel scene, where Bond shoots fire extinguisher to save himself and Camile from fire, whilst in the old days he'd probably have a laser in his watch or exploding pen (which, by the way, is not that impossible).

But I guess it's inevitable, so I'd like them to be as realistic and plausible as possible (e.g. Casino Royale style).

Than again, I suppose that the world of espionage is full of clever little devices that would make Bond gadgets look like childrens' toy  ;).

Since we're getting a snow environment in SPECTRE , I wouldn't mind if Bond used a winter coat with a parachute incorporated, for a quick escape on the top of a mountain or some high place.

That's a good one. I've also a considered a winter coat that Bond could use. From one sleeve or the other, it fires a piton as an anchor with a line that allows him to "free run" or simply just descend from a high peak (or perhaps a structure) to safety. DAD had something similar with Jinx's device.

Some stunt chaps I know have done a few crazy things (and lived) with 300 lbs. fishing line just to see if it could work.

If we went back to a pen gag, rather than a laser thing, how about a good old school cutting torch. Hot blue/gold high temperature style. You know, just to do something silly like cut through bars or iron plates. No acid or lasers, just simple.

I just recently read (again) Gardner's first "Licence Renewed" and enjoyed it again. Bond's smoking is addressed and it also features as another item(s) that Bond utilizes. The lighter charged with halothane and the bugs hidden in cigarettes.

I also like the idea of a laser/cutting beam used in the guise of an E-Cigarette.

As to the more lethal elements, much like the pen guns, an E-Cig could easily fire a .22 which did a lot of damage in the cold war.

I've been digging through a few of my "old school" notes on gadgets.

Could have been my own Dad who said that. Regarding the lighter, he told me that, even if I should give up smoking, I should always carry a lighter. Main reason: in case a beautiful woman needs a light, it'd be too stupid if you don't have one at hand.  ;)

I was thinking that just because gadgets may be featured, doesn't mean they have to be used. In the Everything or Nothing/Blood Stone games, Bond gets captured and has all his equipment confiscated. And also, a certain tool in Bond's pocket may not suit the current situation he's in. But that might be too much of a cruel tease for the audience.

B) Cheers old friend. I recall us comparing notes about our Dads being the same during our trudge through London in '04. In the film "Spy Game" Redford as mentor to Pitt advises him "Always carry a lighter and cigarettes...It's a great icebreaker in the field."

Another notion is just old school. Bond's "money belt" in Licence Renewed and also fitted with an utility blade. Navy Seals always, as part of their survival gear, have cash. Cash is still king. Remember the gold packed into Bond briefcase in FRWL. A spy can still buy his way out of a situation sometimes depending on who they're dealing with but it can also aid them in being able to buy any goods or transportation.

Just came across a few notes from my buddy Sherman (Matt-004). I forgot what a nasty bastard he could be. Back in our RPG days, he actually waited to eject some baddie from his car while driving under an overpass at 90mph. No....Really.
