Great thread, Hansen! Thanks for starting it and for your observations!

 

I loved "Skyfall" in spite of the absurdities that have emerged upon reflection and repeated viewings.

 

I've got a question (apologies if it's already been posed and/or answered):

 

Where did the Aston in the storage unit come from? It's not the car Bond won at poker in CR. It has to be the "Goldfinger" car (same gadgets and number plate) so it's government issue, but to whom was it issued and when? To Connery? To a minus-9-year-old-or-whatever Craig? To immortal archetypoBond?

 

I prefer not to ask to many questions and simply let the art wash over me.

I think QUANTUM OF SOLACE and SKYFALL are kind of themes in search of a story. Hence the best passages in them are exceptional, while as a whole they're merely (for me at least) good but mixed. Thematically rich, narratively poor mixed (kinder, and closer to the truth). But they have things to say, the things are worth saying, and they say them pretty well.

Every Bond movie has plot-holes, even the classics from the 1960s don't make much sense when you really examine them closely. But what's important is how much fun you have watching them, and for me "Skyfall" was an extremely enjoyable movie and certainly IMHO the best 007 movie since Dalton's initial outing.

I always took it to be an old MI6 issued DB5 from the 60s that Craig-Bond had gotten his hands on and restored. Just a small nod as if to say "Yes, this is a reboot. However, you can assume that Double-Os in the 60s also drove this in the current continuity."

This is a very good assessment.

Both films may be lacking in the narrative department but where they succeed is by taking artistic risks and character development previously unheard of in the series.

Well put! I think those two films in particular were lacking in a tight narrative; let's face it, if the plot's weren't focusing on the character of Bond, himself, it's more apparent that the plots were kind of half-baked and going through the motions. Still, I highly enjoy Quantum of Solace and I thought SkyFall was...okay. I think the latter started to come a part at the seams as the story progressed.

Infact, I think that both LALD and Skyfall scores suck, and FYEO, TLD, TND, TWINE, DAD, CR and QoS all had better scores than both movies.

Ah, the age-old Bond continuity debate.

In my opinion there is no true timeline in the entire franchise. The squential "order" of all 23 films is completely interchangable. There are no reboots, although the only constants are the reoccuring charaters, regardless of the changing actors (ie Connery to Moore). There are many posts elsewere on the forum about this.

 

So, I believe that the Aston Martin's presence in Skyfall should not be muddied with complicated timelines and cannons. The fact that Craig's Bond drove one in 2006 does not neccessarily have anything to do with Connery's Bond driving one in 1964. The Aston Martin in Skyfall and even Casino Royale was simply there for us to celebrate a 007 icon. Few things encapsulate the essence of Bond as well as that Aston Martin. And as seen thoughout the prior 22 films the cinimatic character of James Bond loves exotic cars, particularly the DB5.

Thanks for that - I think that's a very good observation and it will guide my appreciation of the Bond cosmology moving forward. Just reflecting on this brought to mind any number of other inconsistencies that it would be folly to try to shoehorn into some rational scheme. Cheers! I think we'll mourn the passing of the Milwaukee summer by watching a Bond out on the patio tonight. FYEO, perhaps.

The film doesn't make a lick of sense. It is like a fever dream - made up as it goes along with no thought to logic. It can be enjoyed metatextually, though.
