There have been 5 reboots since 1969, so I'm confident Eon knows exactly how to handle it.

How do you mean "5 reboots"?

Continuity in the Bond franchise is completely up to interpretation, but essentially every change in actor (ie: Connery to Lazenby/Moore, Moore to Dalton) can be seen as a reboot. The term "reboot" has (unfortunately) become incredibly popular in Hollywood over the past decade. I believe that if OHMSS were made today, the media would be screaming "Bond reboot!". Although in 1969 the term did not exist, thus the average Bond fan was able to enjoy the films without listening to the media constantly talk about complcated and warped timelines that really suck the fun out of the Bond films.

I must say I do enjoy the casting of a new Bond every time.  So much speculation, so many possibilities, so many outrageously false reports...

This next round should be rather interesting.  Now that we've had our first search for a new Bond in the Internet Age back in 2004-2005, it'll be interesting to see just how ludicrous this next search becomes, especially now that journalistic standards seem to erode with each passing day.

The only thing that we do know going into the search, however, is that some seemingly "respectable" news outlet will claim that Sean Connery will play the villain.  ;)

And that Miley Cyrus will do a duet with Adele for the title song.

In addition to, of course, appearing on-camera in the title sequence and being the lead Bond girl.

Not sure about the next Bond, but Jon Hamm was born to play Felix Leiter.

Not me. After all the griping, moaning, websites springing up spouting nonsense, the last time, I'm not looking forward to the next change of lead. The big tent that is Bond fandom definitely took a big credibility hit back in 05-06. The way some people threw their toys out of the pram was an embarrassment and made us all look like a load of mouth breathing obsessives.

Which I proudly am!!! :)

CR presented an opportunity to produce a Bond film in period, ie, 1952.  Could be very interesting.  Not just music, clothes, cars, locations, language, mores and attitudes and hair, but cinematography, colors of the film, etc. to make it seem of that day.  Of course, audiences now are used to more action and uptempo films, but I think it could be handled.  Tarantino uses long, slow scenes to build tension and it works and the films are well-received by critics and audiences, so it can be done.

So, as we know, they stayed modern-day with it, and it was great.

As of the finish of Craig's tenure, the opportunity would arise again.  It would allow for re-making some films which were not made in period and did not adhere to the books.  The first few films were made nearly in the same year as written, and were close to the books.  Which were not, and could be interesting in the manner I suggest ?

Live and Let Die

Moonraker

Diamonds Are Forever

(I purposely am not including TSWLM because of Fleming's prohibition against the book's story being filmed)

(I purposely am not including OHMSS because it was filmed close to its year of publication and stayed close to the book,  Of course, it starts the Marriage-Revenge-Blofeld arc that picks up and concludes in YOLT, so, still thinking it makes more sense NOT to remake OHMSS -- unless you go OUTSIDE the book this time, yet still start the marriage-revenge-Blofeld arc -- I'd start the M-R-B arc in DAF [or the beginning of YOLT, or some combination]...I know, not so faithful to the book, that way, but, hey, I'm conceptializing at this point, not writing a script)

You Only Live Twice

The Man With the Golden Gun

If they want to continue in the vein -- Devil May Care fits into this time period, as does Colonel Sun -- though DMC has that stooooopid plot device, but it could be improved upon (GF improved on the book's plot and otherwise was faithful and it worked very well)

After that...back to the modern day and stories from the other non-Fleming books or not from any books, as has been done many times now.

This would yield 5 to 7 films, just right with a single Bond actor, and if they double-film and release them somewhat close together...

To re-make a film such as the 5 Fleming titles listed here and NOT make them faithful to the book would make it a "why bother ?", and making them in period would make the re-make aspect make sense.

As I have commented on with regard to the Young Bond books elsewhere:  if those are made into films, I think they should be released "staggered" with the grown-Bonds, and the Youngs should DEFINITELY be made in period, regardless of whether the post-Craig Bonds are done in period or not.

So, there.  Time to start preparations, yes ?  I enjoy the Craig Bonds TREMENDOUSLY, so I mean not to push him out of the way.  Just that this will be a lot of work and there's no time like the present to start the work.

I like the idea of period piece that was mentioned above but I think it should be a one off with an actor who would do one film.  Doubt it will happen but it would be cool.

I think the idea of a reboot for Casnio Royale was brilliant and would be a good idea in another 20 years not for the next series of ilms with a new actor.  If it were up to me, here is what I would do. I would approach Christopher Nolan when it became clear that Craig was working on his last Bond film and tell him there will be a 4 year break between Craig's last and the next Bond but they want work to commence immediately on a story arch for a trilogy that has some continuation aspects (perhaps Spectre -esque with Bloefeld back if its not done with Craig). I would lay out three conditions: No reboot, Bond does not die (or appear to die in the last film) and should try to explore some new territory.

Nolan may not be popular with some, but I would really be curious to see what he would do and what Fleming elements he might mine for a serious of movies. The biggest flaw with all the Bond films I would say is that they have never really tried to develop a coherent story arc over a few films (had they a great chance with Spectre and blew it towards the end along with the revolving Bloefelds). More recently, I was quite disappointed that they did not take the time to think that out when Casino Royale was being written so that we get a truly great payoff on what would become Quantum. As it stands, it was a missed opportunity. Maybe Craig 4 and 5 will close the circle.

I have never worried about continuity between the Bonds. I have always seen them as different interpretations of the same character. Regardless of who is the next actor, I think he should portray an established agent right from the first film.

My 2 cents.

CR could have led to a perfect opportunity to 'redo' the films this time in order but with a modern updated twist. Not to disgrace what came before mind you, but to present something new yet familiar that people would have liked.

However I'm quite pleased with the way the reboot has turned out thus far and I cannot wait to see how the next two films will be.

As for Christopher Nolan, he needs two or three more movies to convince me. Memento, and Inception were great; his Batman films were pretentious and overrated. Nolan needs to prove that he can make a stunning movie with a stellar story with cohesion, common sense, and (what his bat films sorely lack) reason. It's almost inevitable that he's going to direct a good one, I'm just hoping it'll be a good offering and he'll be under some form of control.

Craig's retirement will provide an excellent opportunity for me to cross off "Attempt to become the next James Bond actor" on my bucket-list.   :)

Hilly - Interesting choice for the next Felix... I've never thought about Jon Hamm.  I could see his Felix being very much 007's equal (like Felix is presented in the novels).  How about a more "traditional" (i.e. blonde-haired Texan) Felix by going with someone like Josh Holloway ("Sawyer" on TV's Lost)?

I'd love to see that.

Yeah, I like the idea of having nothing to do with Solo whatsoever. So looking forward to the day when that book is a dismal, distant, gladly forgotten memory.

I hope once Craig is finished with the role EON takes enough time off to prepare for 2 or 3 films back to back with whomever takes over the role.
