Very good

Interesting to see QoS so low on your list, Khan.
When I was on MI6 you seemed quite happy with its bizarre mix of leftist and environmental issues.
I was never happy with those aspects of the film, Ambler. Although it must be stated that environmentalism comes across as a pretty jejune enterprise in QOS. (Dominic Greene can be seen as a thinly veiled Al Gore.)
Incidentally, I'll be viewing QOS again in roughly five weeks. We'll see if it improves in my esteem at that point.

Mr Chop.I just tossed this together after coming to some fairly catastrophic realizations.
From Russia With Love
Casino Royale
Thunderball
Quantum of Solace
Moonraker
Dr. No
Goldfinger
Live and Let Die
The Spy Who Loved Me
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
The Living Daylights
Die Another Day
Octopussy
For Your Eyes Only
Goldeneye
The Man with the Golden Gun
License to Kill
A View to a Kill
Diamonds are Forever
Tomorrow Never Dies
You Only Live Twice
The World is not Enough
Catastrophic realization 1
: Great choice at 5.
Catastrophic realization 2 :
Errm. What made you review and increase the standing ?

Something about that ranking still feels wrong, in that I've placed it above the original Bond film to which all owe their allegiance. But I have to listen to my heart. If I could only have 5 Bond films, those are my 5.Mr Chop.
Catastrophic realization 1
: Great choice at 5.
Kind of a double realization, actually. One, that DAD is really quite the blast, and that Brosnan's performance is quite a bit less offensive to me than he is in his other films (ie. on the whole I find he's much more relaxed). And secondly that I really have a hard time 'keeping my tip up' for the John Glen films. I do indeed prefer the glitter of Tamahori's DAD to the flat chalkiness of Glen films. Neither are preferred, but John Glen is a real life-sucker. TLD may yet fall.Catastrophic realization 2 :
Errm. What made you review and increase the standing ?

Interesting to see QoS so low on your list, Khan.
When I was on MI6 you seemed quite happy with its bizarre mix of leftist and environmental issues.
Your departure seems to have lead to something of an epiphany in terms of the re-evaluation of QoS. When it was just released, I remember there were only a handful of people other than myself who openly disliked it. We now seem to have gone 180° on that, and it's now much harder to stumble upon a member who does not fault QoS at all.

For me this is the gold standard by which all Bond films are judged. It has everything, and is one of the few movies out there that leaves me with a big, stupid grin on my face every time I have finished watching it! The ultimate blend of the grounded and the fantastic, TLD is and always shall be the James Bond film for me.
2. Licence To Kill
Timothy Dalton returns in this unique, and brilliantly executed entry. All at once Bond is at his most brutal and his most vulnerable... and Dalton brings a humanity to the character unlike anything I have yet to see in the other films.
3. Octopussy
After my top two films you may be wondering why this is so high on the list... and understandably so given the enormous shift in tone! Simply put, Octopussy is a great adventure movie with a lighthearted core. For me, Roger Moore is at his best here, and the movie never fails to entertain! In short, for all its silliness I find Octopussy really is (yes I am going there) an all time high for the franchise.
4. From Russia With Love
What top five would be complete without this masterpiece of a Bond film? FRWL is one of those rare sequels that infinitely surpasses its predecessor. A sober, grounded story takes the viewer along for an exciting foray into the realm of espionage and scandal. From the suspenseful opening to the wave goodbye at the end of it all, From Russia With Love is pure cinematic bliss from start to finish.
5. Casino Royale
Daniel Craig rounds out my top five with his debut entry in the long running franchise. After weathering the disastrous Die Another Day, we were rewarded with the best franchise "reboot" in the industry. Casino Royale again shows us the human side of Bond, and takes us along with him in a journey that created to the spy we all know and enjoy so much. Love it or hate it (and obviously I fall in the former camp), there is no denying that this movie brought a whole new generation of fans into the fold!
6. Tomorrow Never Dies
Just barely edged out of the top five is an entry by the much maligned Pierce Brosnan. Tomorrow Never Dies is, I feel, a direly underrated film. Easily among the best of the post Dalton Bonds, TND is an explosive action thrill ride that handily trumps the generic, run of the mill action movies that flood our theaters every year. Though not everyone's cup of tea, for what it is TND serves its purpose admirably.
7. Diamonds Are Forever
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, your eyes do not deceive you. Diamonds are Forever is my second favorite entry by the iconic Sean Connery. Argue taste all you like, but DAF is certainly the oddest entry in the series, and is unmatched in its bizarre, dark humor. A movie of a distinctly polarizing nature, DAF has a powerful, if difficult to place, draw on me indeed.
8. Goldfinger
For better or for worse, this is the Bond that probably most influenced the franchise for years to come. Goldfinger is in its own little way a masterpiece, and well deserving of its classic status!
9. For Your Eyes Only
A rare glimpse into the truly serious side of Sir Roger Moore's Bond. FYEO is solid entertainment from start to finish... and a quirky, strangely endearing score (by Bill Conti of all people) is icing on the cake!
10. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
It would be criminal to keep this legendary movie out of the top ten. OHMSS is a great film, and is up to the daunting task of following Connery's greatness. George Lazenby puts in a fine turn as the spy, and John Barry shows just how far superior the film scores of the day were to the ones we have now. "But Leiter!" Some of you may be asking. "Why is it all the way down here?" Well, good question, and I shall do my best to answer it.
For me, OHMSS is robbed of true greatness... I still love the film, but we get a sudden shift into the twilight zone with the whole hypnotism plot, and this damages the film's otherwise grounded tone. As you can see I don't mind a dash of the ridiculous in my Bond movies... but one expects better after the tone they set from the beginning. Also, it has what I feel is by far the worst ending in the series... ruined only by a truly unfortunate choice in music. What should be the most powerful moment in the series is tarnished by a quick jump to the triumphant James Bond theme, yanking us out of the moment altogether. Terrible shame too, as Lazenby proves his worth here in spades. In spite of all that negativity though, I do love this movie, and it deserves top ten placing!
11. The Spy Who Loved Me
Pure escapist fun through and through. TSWLM is a vehicle tailored to the great Roger Moore's take on our favorite character. This film essentially embodies everything about the cinematic Bond, and though it is rather a different animal than Flemming, the heroic super spy of the silver screen is a character worth spending time with himself.
12. Thunderball
look up! look down! Look out! Here comes the biggest Bond of all!
Do I really need to add anything? A great time throughout, Thunderball is pure class.
13. Goldeneye
A great debut effort from Pierce Brosnan, Goldeneye has shades of Dalton's Bond permeating it, and lending a serious tone even in its more fantastic sequences. This is the one that got many of the younger generation into Bond, and though the serious fans may feel a little different, outside our little community this is one that is rather universally appreciated. Definitely a good time, and definitely one I'd recommend to a newcomer to Bond's world.
14. A View To A Kill
Pure 80's, pure Roger, pure fun.
15. Live And Let Die
Roger Moore's debut in the role. He proves instantly likable as Bond, and from its great theme to its fascinating scenery, there is a lot to appreciate here.
16. Quantum Of Solace
A solid follow up to Casino Royale. Although it seems to draw a lot of criticism standing on its own, it is a fine movie when viewed as the final act of Casino Royale, and makes for a more than satisfying end to the story arc presented there.
17. The World Is Not Enough
A great plot executed in a somewhat less than stellar fashion. TWINE is respectable if nothing else for what it aspires to be, and honestly I feel is pretty well underrated itself. Let's be honest here folks... can we really say the dialogue is that much worse than most of what the movies have presented us with? When it works, TWINE really works... when it stumbles, I ultimately see a lot of reason to forgive. I honestly enjoy this one, and if it weren't for so many other deserving Bond films it would be a good deal higher on the list.
18. You Only Live Twice
John Barry's score here is simply phenomenal! If only the rest were up to par... YOLT has some great set-pieces, but doesn't seem entirely sure how to use them. Connery has a lot of great moments, but compared to the bulk of his other work YOLT fades into the background for me, and thus places lower on the list.
19. Moonraker
Yet again, Barry outshines the movie itself. Moonraker is great fun when it gets around to it, but for whatever reason the pace is nearly glacial compared to its peers. Furthermore, given how much I love the book, I can't help but be disappointed at what might have been.
20. The Man With The Golden Gun
This one ventures into "so bad it's good" territory. Christopher Lee is, of course, excellent himself... as are Roger Moore and the great John Barry. As to the rest of the picture, it is equally as preposterous as DAF or OP, but lacks the charm of either and thus is relegated to these depths. All the same, I enjoy this movie even though I know I ought not to... hell, I even like Lulu's ridiculous theme (yes, you read that right)! Still, I recognize it for what it is, and thus to the bottom of the pile it goes.
21. Dr. No
Before anyone cries blasphemy here, let me speak my piece. What crime could possibly condemn Dr. No to the bottom of the barrel (just one spot off DAD no less)? Simply put... it's a good movie.
That may sound completely illogical, but frankly Dr. No has the unfortunate distinction of neither being exceptionally good, nor exceptionally quirky or bad (and thus entertaining for different reasons). Every time I watch this one I am left wishing I had seen FRWL or TLD instead. Dr. No is a movie good then, and I have not ranked it so low because I harbor even the remotest disdain for it... but it just doesn't jump out and scream "watch me" like its peers. Completely in the shadow of its immediate successor, and too decent a film otherwise to grab the interest of my occasional oddball whims, it sinks rather unfortunately to number twenty-one.
22. Die Another Day
Ah, Die Another Day... where to begin? This film is trash. However, to follow that I would say it is not quite so irredeemable as some might contend. Honestly DAD has an excellent first half hour, but sadly things unravel from there, and by the end of it all the dreadful final stretch has washed away the memory of all the good at the beginning. To hate DAD because it is ridiculous is unfair, as many Bond films could be accused of the same... DAD suffers because it is not near so clever or charming as its predecessors when it ventures into the absurd.
Remember the dreadful one-liner ate the conclusion of TWINE? Each moment with Jinx is essentially like being bludgeoned with that same groaning feeling over and over again. DAF manages to be crass and classy all at once, but DAD doesn't put any effort into the wit, and thus comes out as being simply boorish. All that said, I don't really hate DAD in the end... terrible though it is, it's still Bond, and I'll take it over most of the crap Hollywood churns out these days.
A Few Final Words From AL
Apologies for the monster of a post. If you have read this far, I certainly applaud your patience and consideration! At any rate, those are my present thoughts and feeling on the bond series as a whole. Truth be known, I can find something to enjoy in all of the movies, and there is a Bond to suit any mood I find myself in. Though I have greatly enjoyed the books I have read, I most identify with the fantastic world of the cinematic Bond, and firmly believe we have yet to have a bad Bond actor (even if we have had some bad Bond films). Something I love about the series is that there is a little something for everyone... and as they say, variety is indeed the spice of life.

The top nine seem to stay the same, then a clump of sort-of Bonds:
10. YOLT
11. DAF
12. TSWLM
13. GE
14. TND
Then the unwatchable rest.

Do you consider The Living Daylights to be unwatchable?

As a film, yes: the plot is all over the place and the set pieces scream stunt-heavy second unit fodder - but that's characteristice of all Glen's Bond films, so yeah, unwatchable. Rather read the book/short story. Dalton has some nice moments, but also silly ones unbecoming a Bond film IMO (his goofy grin needs to go, just don't ever picture Fleming's Bond looking like that and it's weirdly at odds with Dalton's naturally vulpine features).Do you consider The Living Daylights to be unwatchable?
Would've loved for Dalton to have taken over in '81, and with a decent director on board. Surprised Bond made it out of the 80s - hang on... he didn't, did he?
