Fascinating. Would you like to elaborate why CR is left behind? (I´m really interested and don´t criticize your opinion.)
Thank you for asking.
First of, there is the competition. I have been a Bond fan for a long time. My first 007 film was OHMSS which I saw when it was first released. I loved it and was able to see the four of the first five Connery Bond on rerelease soon after. When the Moore period came, I loved most of his films as well. My loved for these early Bonds can be seen in my rankings. All of my top 9 films were from 1981 or earlier. I guess that I love these films so much it would take something that really appealed to me to crack the list.
Now, some people really appreciate CR for it being comparitely realistic to many of the films. That is not something that affects me one way or the other. Two of my favorites are some of the most realistic films (FRWL and OHMSS) but two of the least realistic are also there (TSWLM and YOLT). One thing that does push down CR for me is the type of violence. Like LTK, another one down on my list, CR is rather gritty in its violence. I just do not like that in a Bond film.
Also, unlike others, I was never interested in "How Bond became Bond".
So those are some of the reasons. That said, as I have done since 1969, I can't wait for the next 007 film.

That is one thing I love about Casino Royale. To me the closest to Fleming the better.CR is rather gritty in its violence. I just do not like that in a Bond film.
My list in 2003 I think pretty much stays the same. With slotting New Casino Royale in at no 6 after Dr No. Still can't touch those early Connery's or OHMSS. Also might swap Thunderball or Goldfinger round, never can decide.1. From Russia With Love
2. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
3. Goldfinger
4. Thunderball
5. Dr No
6. Tomorrow Never Dies
7. You Only Live Twice
8. Goldeneye
9. The Living Daylights
10. Live and Let Die
11. The Man with the Golden Gun
12. Licence to Kill
13. Diamonds Are Forever
14. For Your Eyes Only
15. The World is not Enough
16. The Spy Who Loved Me
17. Moonraker
18. Die Another Day
19. Casino Royale (1967)
20. Octopussy
21. A View to A Kill
22. And way down the bottom from the rest
Never Say Never Again

That is fine by me. I think that one reason the series has survived so long is that the emphasis of the films changes from time to time. That is one thing I love about Casino Royale. To me the closest to Fleming the better.CR is rather gritty in its violence. I just do not like that in a Bond film.

Thank you, Bill. Very well put and understable. I don´t enjoy violence on screen (or in life) either. I wouldn´t mind future Bond films cutting back on the violence because it is not IMO what a good Bond film (or Fleming´s books) make interesting. Unfortunately, today´s audiences seem to expect it and find films without violence "old school" and "boring".

I don't think the violence in Casino Royale was violence for violences sake, but was there to establish we have made a significant step back to the Bond of Fleming rather then the too fantasy (IMO) world the films have stepped into. I would much rather have a hero bleed when hit. To me it is so much more honest and in many respects illustrates what a nasty world Bond lives in. I am so glad we are far removed now from the world of Roger Moore.I wouldn´t mind future Bond films cutting back on the violence because it is not IMO what a good Bond film (or Fleming´s books) make interesting. I've given up on outright ranking them, so I'll just group them into tiers instead:
Great idea for a ranking system. I've often found that it's very difficult to rank the films in a 1-21 format, so I think that I'll make an attempt at this type of a ranking system.
Tier 1:
- Licence To Kill
- For Your Eyes Only
- The Living Daylights
- From Russia With Love
- Casino Royale
- Dr. No
What I think separates these films from all the rest are the performances by the actors portraying Bond. All of the films are very, very good in their own rights, but are elevated even moreso by the top-notch performances by the actor in the lead role, especially For Your Eyes Only which features Roger Moore's best performance in the role.
Tier 2:
- Thunderball
- Live and Let Die
- On Her Majesty's Secret Service
- The Spy Who Loved Me
- Octpussy
These films are also amongst the best in the franchise, but they do lack something that is present in the Tier 1 films, which not only rank as great Bond films but great films in general.
Tier 3:
- A View to a Kill
- You Only Live Twice
Both of these films are, I think, better than they're often given credit for, but not good enough to be ranked amongst the best in the franchise either. AVTAK is a favorite of mine, although I certainly acknowledge the fact that it's not nearly as well made as any of the films in Tiers 1 & 2.
Tier 4
- Diamonds Are Forever
- Tomorrow Never Dies
- Moonraker
These are the films that I rank towards the bottom of the list, but aren't quite as bad as some of the films to follow.
Tier 5
- GoldenEye
- Goldfinger
- Die Another Day
- The World Is Not Enough
- The Man With the Golden Gun
These are the films that I find to be the worst in the franchise, although which one I find to be the worst often changes.

because I've watched them all again the last few weeks. Also means that some of my reviews on the reviews threads are in the wrong order now and can almost be discounted, I might re-do them eventually. Most notably Die Another Day slipped down a bit.

UPDATED LIST,
because I've watched them all again the last few weeks. Also means that some of my reviews on the reviews threads are in the wrong order now and can almost be discounted, I might re-do them eventually. Most notably Die Another Day slipped down a bit.
1/ On Her Majesty's Secret Service

8/ Octopussy

18/Never Say Never Again
18/The Man With The Golden Gun
19/Goldeneye
20/A View To A Kill
21/Licence To Kill
My current top 8 are your top 8. TB-YOLT-OHMSS rivals FRWL-GF-TB as the best 3 film period for Bond IMHO.
Here's my current list:
001) Thunderball
002) From Russia With Love
003) The Living Daylights
004) On Her Majesty’s Secret Service
005) Casino Royale
006) Moonraker
007) You Only Live Twice
008) Octopussy
009) Goldfinger
0010)Dr. No
0011)The Spy Who Loved Me
0012)The Man with the Golden Gun
0013)Diamonds Are Forever
0014)Die Another Day
0015)Licence to Kill

0017)For Your Eyes Only
0018)GoldenEye
0019)Live and Let Die
0020)The World is not Enough
0021)A View to a Kill
Generally my top 11 stay as follows:
All the 1960s Bond films, TLD, CR and my 3 favorite Moores: MR, OP and TSWLM. Objectively speaking, a good argument can be made than TSWLM, DN and GF are better films than MR, YOLT, and OP but I feel the latter 3 are more underrated and provide some improvements over TSWLM, DN and GF respectively. Love all of 'em though.

We have quite similar tastes mate! I especially agree with your last statement. For example, maybe MR is inferior to TSWLM as a whole film, but I think in some ways it improves on it and takes the Bond 'formula' further and to more interesting heights/depths [whichever way you look at it!]

The poor guy. And I don't mind him at all. Early 80s C Broccoli era Bonds would have been fine with him. But the films between LTK and CR just seem off to me. Like they were made by a rival company. With rotten ideas.
