The funny thing about Laserdisc is how many times you'd have to get up during a movie to go flip the disc over or switch to the next one! The size of them is very misleading as they really don't hold a lot of data. The Criterion Laserdiscs pioneered DVD in a sense because they were among the first to really add extensive bonus material and audio commentaries, some of which has never found its way to DVD.
So it's like an LP with two sides? each containing half the movie?

More or less. About the same size as an LP and movies would have to be split up. Longer movies like King Kong would be something ridiculous like three discs, double sided!
Such a nightmare! Thank God for DVD and Bluray!

In 1997 MGM began to release some of the films on dvd. They were labeled as being THX certified. They featured fullscreen and widescreen versions of each film on one disc.
Along with a few special features. Some of which never made it to the S.E./Ultimate or Blu Ray editions. They came in the WB style snapper cases (WB actually silently distributed the MGM catalog in the mid-late 90's, WB also owned the patent and manufactoring plant that produced the snapper case) and artwork was similar to that of the 95 Vhs Collection.
To my knowledge only a few of the titles were released before the line was scrapped in favor of more elaborate Special Editions (Starting with Tomorrow Never Dies in late 1998). If anyone had any info on more bond films released under this banner please let me know, the THX certification site only recognizes these titles. One of the reasons why the line may have stopped is Moonraker (and some say Spy) Suffered from DVD Rot. Which is similar to LaserRot with the LaserDisc format. Cheaper materials were used during manufacturing and the inner disc material began to rot away.
As talked about before the original Goldeneye release from 1997.
It came in a snapper case and featured both pan-scan and widescreen versions of the film along with trailers.
I own this dvd and can post better images later, but here is the cover.
Last but not least, here is Tomorrow Never Dies. By 1998 MGM was now MGM Home Entertainment and was no longer MGM/UA Home Video. They also began distributing their product and no longer used the WB style snap cases.
TND had 3 dvd releases in a row. In May 1998 (hitting at the same time as the rental disc) as a bare bones release. Featuring Pan/Scan and Widescreen versions, a booklet and trailer.

The original DVD at the time was not all that bare bones, but later in Nov 1998 The Special Edition was released in a sleek steel looking case. (The steel look was printed, it wasn't actually metallic.) This edition had considerable more features.

In 99/2000 the cover was changed to match the rest of the Special Editions in the Bond boxsets (They all eventually were released as singles as well.)
In early 2002 they went OOP and were re-released again in 2003.

Stay Tuned, working on a rundown of the various laserdisc releases over the years as well as putting together images for the 2006,2008 and 2012 dvd/blu releases.

Nice find!
I'm still digging to complete the laserdisc collection. Seems the release schedule was much more sporadic on laser than vhs.

Thanks for this. I recall the 1996 trailer montage was used for The James Bond Story doc.

"Looking for a little piece and quite?" I just love this one. I believe the FRWL vhs I had featured that and the GE trailer on it. I miss the UA logos;

This is my favorite!
It's just pure class!
Also like the MGM/UA variation we had on 'The Living Daylights' and 'Licence To Kill'.

Same here. It was used on most VHS in Argentina. Still, I like the 90s and the new one.

I can recall going into my local WH SMITH back in 1998, probaly to get the latest DOTOR WHO VHS release, and recall seeing a very small display stand that had these strange looking slimline boxes in it, called DVD, this was the first time I had even heard of DVD, and one of the releases was TND. I never bought this version, as by the time I got my first DVD player at the end of 1999, for the "bargain" price of £189 which was the size and looked like a BETAMAX video recorder, it had been deleted and the SPECIAL EDITIONs were coming out! I did have all mid 1990s VHS widescreen releases (with trailer included), apart from TWINE, as I swithced over to DVD by then. I still have them all in the loft, alongside the 2 casion royale (1954 and 1967) and NSNA

Resurrecting this thread to display my latest VHS acquisition. The (Sth) Korea edition of Casino Royale - a 2-tape set. AFAIK, Casino Royale was issued on VHS in Argentina and Korea.
This and a swag of other new material will be displayed on my site on the next update (late Dec 2015 / early Jan 2016)
