I am so thankful that nobody can now say "but what about "Thunderball" adjusted for inflation.
Day after day, "Thunderball"'s inflation adjusted gross (from its original release and multiple re-releases over the years) falls further and further behind "Skyfall"'s.
"Skyfall" is my favorite movie in the series so I'm pumped that it is doing so well. The most successful movie in the James Bond series (inflation adjusted or not).
By the way: "Skyfall" made $14.22M in its first 3 days in China.

Yeah, but it's apparently underperforming. 18m in 4 days now which is (I guess) less than The Dark Knight Rises over the same period. Oh well, at this point it's all icing on the cake anyway.
Skyfall's success makes me feel kind of bad about its successor because I don't expect it to be anywhere close to this. I'd like to be wrong about that, but I already feel like I need to prepare myself to drudge through a lot of articles about the successor's box office disappointment.

I agree K1....almost like the dissapointment 'Quantum Of Solace' faced even before release of living up the success and scale of 'Casino Royale'.
Granted, 'QOS' could have been a little more polished to have a better reception, but it was still a decent fun Bond film.
I pray Bond 24, if not managing to rake in the money near what 'Skyfall' does, at least makes a big chunk and is favoured just as much as 'Skyfall' for the effort, passion and thought put into it. And obviously without the global recognition of 007 for thr 50th Anniversary to back Bond 24, that will probably ease box-office takings slightly as "Bond Mania" would have calmed down again by then!

Do you think the success of Dark Knight was a hinderance to Dark Knight Rises? Or Goldfinger to Thunderball for that matter?

I wouldn't necessarily call it underperforming the in grand scheme of things. Quantum made what, $21 million overall in China? Which was higher than Casino Royale which made around $10 million in China. Skyfall is already near the $20 million mark after only four days. I understand that because it blew away every other market it was kind of expected to do the same in China, but still, it's doing well on its own and anything else it makes is just a bonus now.

It took 50 years to even be competitive with Thunderball. Lets not kid ourselves too, the stars aligned for Bond in 2012. 50th anniversary, Olympics, and a good movie with a popular Bond. I'm not saying Bond 24 doesn't have a shot, it has something Skyfall never had: momentum. But can it really one up it? Maybe, hopefully, but odds are it probably won't. And that's okay.

Well, it has the widest release of any movie in China to my knowledge and it's a whole different ballgame versus Quantum. You can't even really compare the two because of how fast that market has expanded. "Underperforming" is relative anyway. It's only underperforming when you consider its expectations otherwise it's probably just doing par. And who knows, it could pick back up. It's not like it's doing bad. Hell, if you read Hollywood Reporter, they make it sound like it's killing the market: http://www.hollywood...ion-yuan-415307 but the Chinese blogosphere they quote is calling it a disappointment. I don't know... it's all a bonus as you said though.

That's what I mean - it's only underperforming in the sense that it isn't the absolute smash it's been everywhere else, but that said it's still doing well enough to hold its own over there. The rest is indeed just bonus. We've hit the billion dollar Bond, beat Thunderball, got over $300 million domestically, and become the highest grossing film ever in the UK. I'd say we've hit enough milestones already!

No, not really. In some way, its frightening how well it does. Who would have thought that a while ago?
I wouldn't want to be in the prods seat as to what to do now.. It can go all ways and they know it.
Skyfall Draws Record Crowds In China
The James Bond movie Skyfall, which opened last Monday in China, took in
$35 million during its first week, according to the website 21cn.com.
It was a record for a 2D film, the website said, and was exceeded only
by James Cameron's 3D Avatar, which opened in China with $46 million in
its first week in 2010. With numerous scenes shot in Shanghai, the film
has received positive notices from Chinese moviegoers. The state-owned
website China.org.cn, quoted a 27-year-old media worker as saying, It is
a rare thing for an international action movie to depict China in a
fashionable way. But on a Twitter-like social media site called Sina
Weibo, one blogger commented, It feels somewhat weird to see Bond in a
Chinese setting. China.org.cn quoted Beijing filmmaker Chen Chuanlu as
saying that the film shows that Hollywood has now broken the stereotype
of [Chinese] being treacherous, backward and superstitious ... thanks to
the growing importance of the domestic market and increasing
understanding about the nation.

So the 2 questions now are:
1. Will The Hobbit catch it? (My guess is no)
and
2. Can it move into Trevelyan's spot by besting LotR: Return of the King?

I dont think the Hobbit can catch Skyfall but it will over 1 billion as well, and Skyfall should past LOTR and past transformers as well

1. No, the Hobbit has no Chance to pass Skyfall
2. Unfortunately not, because China was not so successful we have all expected. (M:I-4 reach 100 Mio $ in China, Skyfall ends at 60-65 Mio $)

I'm loving the fact 'Skyfall' is now 00-7th on the all-time highest grossing films. Wow, just saying that out loud is brilliant - James Bond in the Top Ten Highest Grossing Films EVER.
And 00-7th is perfect place to rest now.

Certainly a towering achievement.
What else is an achievement, based on your profile, is Skyfall becoming favourite Bond movie. It's no mean feat to knock off 'Never Say Never Again' when it comes to you. You must have loved it a great, big bunch.

Absolutely...."Skyfall" is my all-time favorite James Bond movie. I especially love the "Straw Dogs"-esque ending (the 1970s original not the remake).
Did anyone ever think that day would come when "Never Say Never Again" would fall to number 2 in my rankings....not me.

I’m glad you enjoyed it. I was thinking about these two films and they do share a few key themes which may have appealed to you.
Both opening sequences end with Bond failing in some way –NSNA Bond stabbed, SF Bond shot (though not his fault).
As a result, Bond is ordered to get back into shape – NSNA sent to Shrublands, SF Bond undergoing fitness and marksmanship tests.
NSNA features an older Bond, SF questions Bond’s age, if hehas he lost a step and how espionage is a young man’s game. And of course both feature motorbike chases.
