Fantastic! I wonder if 'Skyfall' will have a version of this DVD bundled in with it, for a bit more cost.

This DVD and 'The Making Of The Living Daylights' book is a great way to spend my Christmas money I hope I get! :)

Any news on a US release? Why is it a DVD only release?

Seems like this SHOULD be on the blu ray format.

5. The Dalton era, being more honest about how the public didn't catch on. Briefly mentioning the 3rd film. They really need to go in deeper with just what was planned to happen in 91/92, I don't think they realize how interested fans are of this project. Other than some press at the time of the films release, Dalton hasn't really spoke of Bond as much as Moore or Brosnan. It was nice to see him do an interview, he really had a love and care for the character. His take required some fresh blood all the way around, the producers/series wasn't ready for his kind of take.

> More on Bond 17 in, you guessed it,  The Making of The Living Daylights.  While I somewhat agree with you, I think you have highly unrealistic expectations of what a 2 hour documentary on a film series that has spanned 50 years can cover.

No, I didn't expect much more than what was given in the 2hrs, just that it could have easily been longer but I'm more than happy with what we ended up with. Also, in regards to going deeper into certain topics such as Dalton's third bond, I would actually have preferred something on the Goldeneye or LTK dvd/blu that covered the topic, not necessarily expecting it in this particular doc. Fans are interested in the various plans in the 6 year gap, as I'm sure your aware there is a lot of  false stories floating around.  Regardless, I made this post before I knew about the Making of the Living Daylights book being out ( and covering the topic of Bond 17), my copy will be here soon and I can't wait!

I just recently watched the doc again, it was pretty touching to hear about the last phone call between Connery and Chubby. Seems like Connery just wanted to be treated fairly in regards to the success of the series, it's nice to know that even after all those years they left it on a good note. Some say Sean wasn't the sole reason why Bond took off. We'll never know how successful Dr. No (or the series in general) would have been without Sean, but he was

cast and was a big part of the success. He was the first, and will probably always be remembered as the best to most.

Looks like Tim Dalton and I agree about this film!

Dalton was not entirely pleased with the end result, which focused a lot on the real-life drama and litigation that has weaved its way through the 50 year saga. "To tell you the truth, I wish they had concentrated more on why the movies have lasted 50 years and given more understanding and illumination about the brilliant work that has gone into the makings of those movies and how it has been protected and shepherded by the family, " he said.

I watched the documentary on Netflix and I must say I was really impressed. It is a great documentary, especially some of the problems Connery was facing in Japan filming YOLT, Saltzman selling his shares of the series, and the direction of the Bond films.  To be honest it was great to just listen to Dalton and Brosnan talk about playing Bond.  You can tell Dalton really wanted to make the Bond character Fleming created and Brosnan just loved being James Bond. The whole segment about Lazenby and his regrets about giving up the role is mind blowing.  As with a lot of things in life watching it brought a lot more questions than answers.  I still don't quite get the story about Brosnan being let go, they talked about Bond being in a different world after 9/11, I just find that tough to believe because DAD was such a worldwide hit.  And the way the documentary seems to state is that after Brosnan was let go they got the rights to Casion Royale, but I thought they had the rights to Casino Royale in 1999, the timing just seems a little bit off.

Overall the documentary is great and yes it could have went into so many other areas about the series.  I did find it odd that Lewis Gilbert was the only director interviewed (besides Sam Mendes).  It makes me wonder did the documentary director interview a lot more from the series and just decided to follow the story line of Broccoli and Saltzman instead.  Also, it seemed like Lazenby had the most interview time in the documentary compared to the rest of the Bonds.  I highly recommend this, if it is released in the US on DVD I will purchase it to add to the collection.

Amazon UK has it now reduced from £14.99 to the bargain of £9.99 - order it before the price goes back up!

I tried buying a copy from HMV Solihull today, but they had no new video stock in today. The staff member I spoke to said it was due to issues with suppliers, no doubt connected to being in Administration. I hope they get it sorted before SkyFall comes out as I really want to get the steelbook version. Anyhoo, I've ordered it from Amazon and will have to wait for it to arrive (and be puzzled as to why there is no blu-ray release).

I'm surprised there seems to be little marketing for it, as in no clear Blu Ray release and nothing announced the the non-Europe market...

Amazon UK lists the running time at 93 minutes.  Is this the same as the original, or did they possibly add anything?

The Top Gear Bond 50th Anniversary show is being released on DVD in February, supposedly with some extra interview segments.

93 minutes is the same as the cinema version - it's identical, which is a shame I suppose, but at least we don't lose anything! :)

Well, a making of the documentary would have been a bit much.

And quite frankly, this madness that every release has to offer deleted scenes, commentary and so on is just a sign of the times.

I can remember those days when the film was the big draw...

Yeah, it shouldn't be expected with everything. This is just the documentary, and that's good enough for me to buy it alone! Any features are a bonus.

I just read this interview with the director, it's a shame that he couldn't get anything more interesting from Pierce Brosnan considering he spent 3 hours with him.

So, having watched it I must say it is a very nice and surprisingly touching documentary on how Ian Fleming´s creation was made into the most enduring franchise in film history. It benefits wildly from the use of John Barry´s legendary scores and features nice interviews with all Bond actors except Connery. The most interesting is Brosnan´s take on the famous phone call when EON decided to let him go. Of course, one gets the idea that he wants to spin this around, but there is still lots of anger under his amused facade, I suspect. I guess, he extremely enjoyed his tenure, then got understandably mad that he could not continue, then saw Craig earning all the respect that he would have wanted - and therefore he makes fun of his own films, especially DAD - simply because it´s the "politically correct" thing to do. Again, Sir Roger and Timothy Dalton carry themselves much more dignified. And Lazenby acknowledges his mistake of being too young, inexperienced and impressionable by outside forces.

Still, the emotional impact of this documentary, IMO, is due to Barbara Broccoli´s memories of her father - and especially the moment when she met Connery in a restaurant and he spoke to Cubby one last time, years after his hurtful comments on the Johnny Carson show, while promoting NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN.

All in all, the DVDs already have had more thorough documentaries on each film - but this one is a very nice one to have, if you´re a die hard fan. Not a must have - but a definitely cosy, comforting, nice one to have.

Nice review there SAF - one of the best things about the documentary I found was reading the actors faces as they discussed their dissapointments or frutration with how their time came to an end, mostly Lazenby and Brosnan, and even Dalton to a lesser extent.

It seems there is mostly always a sense of drama and controversy behind a Bond leaving the role. I think only Moore has left with all credentials intact and with no legal or moral disputes with the studios or EON team.

I hope when Craig bows out it's as clean as Moore, and not up-in-the air like we see the others were.

True.

Although one could read here and there that SIr Roger was not too thrilled either when he was told his service would no longer be needed. But he somehow made his peace with it in a more dignified way. Maybe because he really had a long and satisfying tenure, while Lazenby was throwing it all away, Dalton just had bad luck and Brosnan considered himself untouchable when he wasn´t. I guess Craig will go much more quietly since he always said that he would only do it as long as he felt like it. When it´s time for him to go he will not throw a tantrum, I suppose.
