I kinda like the idea Celebrate the 50th anniversary and the summer Olympics all in one. win win in my book

How do these two things possibly relate besides being related to Britain?

That's all they need to do. You may as complain in the same way if they show a red double decker bus at any point of the Olympics.

I guess for me, the issue is not the connection but the disconnection in message. Bond is cool and all but the message is kind of messed up.

You have a spy that is known for killing foreigners and challenging global powers to act as a quasi-representative in the Olympic games, which are more about the world coming together than competition. It may be too PC for me to think this way, but to have Daniel actually be Bond in the bit is inappropriate and unnecessary. Bond doesn't need the publicity. At least not in this sort of arrangement.

I think you're overthinking it: Bond doesn't stand for death and destruction in most peoples' eyes: he's fun and excitement.

So is this for real? And if so, should we now count The Arrival as a "James Bond film." Bond 23 1/2?

I fail to see how James Bond the icon is or could be associated with the Olympics the event.

I see it more as a filming coup to shoot inside the Palace for the next film. Or at least maybe that is my hope.

The Olympics??

I've no idea if the story is true or not and having zero interest in the olympics, I couldn't care less (it's only April and I've already had enough of the coverage). However, in the UK the darker aspects of Bond'd character simply aren't acknowledged by the vast majority in the way that they are by fans on a board such as this - he's just seen as being a quintisentially British national hero (in the same way that Sherlock Holmes or Doctor Who are) and as such most would find it entirely appropriate for the him to be used in this way.

I hope this is true! Bond helping to open the Olympics? Yes please!

He's one of the faces of Great Britain, a worldwide icon who 'saves the world' and nowadays has become bigger in someways then he ever has been and to be fair...it is the 50th Anniversary so this will be one hell of a milestone for the franchise to delve into, such a global event!

The Yahoo article doesn't source the information, and the "we got this" just quotes the April 1st Sun article.

I imagine it will be in line with something like the little short film that opens the Oscars every year or the little ad that was made for the Oscars with all the different stars popping up in a "search" for Billy Crystal... If it happens I don't doubt it will be quite funny

I like the idea of this. Granted, nothing is solid. A few conflicting bits have popped up, but I *think* this could be for real. Time will tell.

April Fool joke can be fun. One year I made a complete [censored] out of myself, by posting a link here about a lost Batman movie Orson Welles directed in the '40's. Forgot it was April 1th, got me real good. I was looking for the thread I couldn't find it.

That would be pretty big for Bond, but is it really that shocking if true? Bond is right up there when foreigners think of the UK. I would say The Royals, Harry Potter, Bond, and some damn charming accents are their pop cultural legacy to the world.

That's what worries me. Is the Monarchy popular culture? I suspect the next word should be "Discuss" but I suspect that would result in hatefulnesses.

It steps into it, of course. It's being discussed as pop culture right here, with 007 meeting the Queen. Kate on the front of OK Magazine etc. But just because it is doesn't mean it doesn't also have huge relevance to historical and social culture: sort of goes without saying.

If you don't like the idea of hatefulness I'd say British history isn't a good place to start.

Really surprised, instead of being proud, that this hero of yours is seen important enough to get such a gig, you start complaining? That is beyond me...its not that the Royals can be taken real serious anymore - they have become a british export, England makes mony from. Nothing wrong with that in my book...

If there's anything more English than a Greco-German, it's a Franco-Scot. That's detente, comrade.
