So, what IS Skyfall?

I did originally have 'The Villain's plan' up there, but if it is, then it would fall into other categories.

To me, that played - and still plays - along with the official synopsis of M's past haunting her, and MI6 coming under attack.

The 'emotional context'...that throws the theory for a bit of a loop. Someone mentioned it's the name of the 'ancestral residence' home / Scottish castle - be it M's, Bond's, the villain's, whomever.

So, there's been a lot of talk recently over what exactly Skyfall actually is. A lot of great ideas have been thrown around the boards, so I've made a poll. What exactly do you think Skyfall could be? Biological warfare sounds like it could be really interesting. Bond getting ill? Trying to find a cure for himself, and the many others taken ill? Sounds a bit generic, I know. If done right though, could be great. Another really interesting idea is that it's an operation M hushed up during the cold war. Heading to M's downfall. Those are my top two, but I think I'm going to have to vote for the latter.

I must say - the virus plot has been done to death. And "24" covered all ground on that before.
I´d rather have a secret plot M has put in motion which now comes back to wreak havoc on MI6. Maybe an emergency plan which has the military take over the government? Or some sleeper agents being awakened by mistake...

A fair bit of the Fleming canon depends on links with WW2 - we're now in an era where the Cold War can fill in for that.

The trademark of Bond's razor blade shaver
Maybe the plot is about a 60's shaver M hide out somewhere and Bond's trying to recover to get a shave
Thank God the reputation system is gone... this post would have been awarded with a -5 for sure!

As we all know, the world came very close to destroying itself during the Cuban Missile Crisis. But there was a second episode twenty years later, known as Able Archer 83. It was conceived by NATO countries as an exercise to simulate a nuclear attack (and even simulated a movement from DEFCON-5 all the way through to DEFCON-1), while the Soviets were busy trying to perfect a means of anticipating a nuclear incident, and they ended up mistaking NATO wargames as preparations for a pre-emptive strike because they believed that NATO would move nuclear devices into position under the guise of wargames.
So here's what I think "Skyfall" could be: an exercise or plan similar to Able Archer 83. When news first broke that BOND 23 could be SKYFALL, a lot of people turned to Chicken Little and the saying "the sky is falling, go and tell the king". But what if there is no king to tell? "Skyfall" could be a Cold War-era plan to capitalise on the power of paranoia and hysteria - to stage an attack on Russia that would force the Soviet high command to double back and regroup, creating a vacuum in leadership. While the Russians are in the process of evaluating the situation, MI6 moves to mislead Soviet citizens into believing they are leaderless through a disinformation campaign. When the Russian high command finally comes back on-line, they find that the Soviet Union is fractured into hundreds of stateless pockets of people, and they have to spend time getting everything back in order, distracting them from the rest of the world. It would be a way of incapacitating the government without actually firing a single shot. "Skyfall" would take advantage of paranoia and hysteria, leading people to believe they are in a crisis and have no-one to lead them. The plan, however, would never have been put into action - until the events of SKYFALL, when someone uses it against London. With information that the attack is real, MI6 and the government are forced to suspend their operations, regroup, and await futher intelligence. In the meantime, England is rudderless.

Alright, here's an idea of what "Skyfall" might be: a backup plan.

I’m going to have a wild stab and say it has something to do with a mountain in China.
In ancient Chinese myth, Mount Buzhou was a pillar that stopped the sky from falling.

If it´s not that, Cap, then you have there a solid future Bond script ideia. Very interesting indeed.

noun
1. a jazz style of the 1920s deriving from blues, ragtime, and folk music, played by bands made up of both standard and improvised instruments.
2. a style of popular music developed in England during the 1950s, deriving from hillbilly music and rock-'n'-roll, and played on a heterogeneous group of instruments, as guitar, washboard, ceramic jug, washtub, and kazoo.
I'm betting that Bond will be playing the ceramic jug.

Operation Skyfall.
And maybe this comes back to carry out whatever it is in 2012?
