HERE'S THE LATEST FROM CINEMA BLEND:

As the last two weeks have been filled with casting announcements for Soderbergh's Magic Mike, I asked the writer what the status of the project is and when it might go into production. Saying that “The script is done and [they’ll] start casting soon,” Burns is hopeful that they’ll be able to start production in the spring.

I then asked if the story will be based on any of the episodes from the show's four season run or the movies that were previously made, to which Burns said that some elements will be familiar, but it will be set more in a real world context. "I think if people know the show they’ll recognize tiny little things," Burns said. "All those shows are called, like, “The Terbuf Affair” or whatever. Our affair comes from something that was actually going on in the world at the time."

Needs younger actors anyway for Solo and Illya. Also it references that the start date is in Feb. Getting closer.

It'll be interesting to see if this is a body blow or just another blip (as often happens in the film business). If Soderbergh still wants to do it (which he apparently does), that helps the odds. From what I've read, Soderbergh is fairly thrifty (he brings his films on budget or under budget) and quick. Also, there had been no casting actually announced (Clooney had been mentioned a lot but the studio had never actually said he was going to do it).

So we'll see.

Clooney reason for dropping out:

"He said he just can't do the action and stunt scenes," revealed an U.N.C.L.E. source who's familiar with handsome actor's health situation. "In fact, I think he's planning on having another operation during the time he would have been filming."

Clooney's reps have not returned comment, as yet.

"But George knows this movie is all about action," continued the U.N.C.L.E. insider, "and he knows he's just not up to it. That's what this is about. It's nothing to do with Steven."

Soderbergh and Clooney have a long-standing relationship together, most famously from the Oscar-winning director's Ocean's Eleven franchise, which, admittedly, allowed George to thieve and plunder with gadgets and killer facial expressions more than the death-defying stunts that have apparently been written into the U.N.C.L.E. script.

Death defying stunts. Ian Fleming's Napoleon Solo may be back with a vengeance.

Wasn´t it reported that Clooney has been suffering from a back injury that occurred during the filming of "Syriana"? Something so bad he still has problems with it. I guess this really could be the deciding factor for him turning down such a demanding shoot.

Yes, that is mentioned in passing in the URL that Delfloria posted. (Not the portion Defloria quoted in his post but in other sections of that story). Here is that portion:

//
It's no secret that the movie that earned George Clooney an Oscar also pretty much ruined his health. After a particularly violent torture scene in Syriana severely hurt his back and brain, Clooney's been coping with the injuries ever since.//

All the things we loved about U.N.C.L.E. in the first place.

Exceprt from an interview with the writer.

At the time, they had just handed in the first draft of the script for Man From U.N.C.L.E. and were ready to work with the studio. Although Burns couldn't say much about it, he did tell us that it was going to be set in the '60s, which was part of what drew him to it.

"I thought it would be really fun to go back and look at spycraft in the Cold War and what you could and couldn't do. When you think about the world in the 1960's just in terms of cars and fashion and the aesthetic, to be able to go and shoot that world with today's cameras and today's technology, I think we could do some really cool stuff. Then also, the thing that was so cool about 'U.N.C.L.E.' that people don't realize--and this is why I like it more than 'Mission: Impossible'--the initial conceit of 'U.N.C.L.E.' was amazing. It was really about an organization that didn't have an affiliation with a country and Napoleon Solo and Illya Kuryakin were guys who should've been sworn enemies. One was Russian and one was American and they worked together. In that way, it was a really incredibly progressive, hopeful kind of show."

We were curious how serious this version of "U.N.C.L.E" would be, because the original show did have a certain sense of humor, although at the time, he was writing with Clooney in mind.

"It's fun writing action stuff because we get to go to some cool places, but it's really fun writing dialogue for George and letting there be some witty banter because with 'Contagion' there was no real room for much witty banter there."

Shame, I liked the idea of him as Solo. Are there any alternatives discussed already? And what about Kuriyakin?

I've seen no aleternate Solo castings or any potential Kuryakin castings in the various entertainment news Web sites I've seen. Among fans, some would like to see Jon Hamm as Solo.

Meanwhile, in 2007, this fan video was uploaded to YouTube, imagining a Clooney version of Solo. It uses the version of Jerry Goldsmith's theme (arranged by Morton Stevens) used in the second half of the show's first season.:

Here's another fan-made video. It uses a version (again arranged by Stevens) that was part of a program where a symphony played various Goldsmith music from movies and television shows.

Always thought Craig would have been a great Kuryakin to Clooney's Solo. Now back to reality..... We'll just have to wait and see what comes up.

Huffington Post interview yesterday:

Q: You've talked about retiring, but you still have three more movies to do. That could take a few more years, right?

A: "Nah. 18 months. In a few weeks, I start shooting a male stripper movie with Channing Tatum. We worked together on (the upcoming) 'Haywire.' Then I'm going to do 'Man From U.N.C.L.E' in February and 'Liberace' in June."

Q: So after that you're truly retiring from filmmaking?

A: "Call it whatever you want -- hiatus, sabbatical. I'm just gonna disappear for a while."

Warner Bros. is looking to freshen up a TV show from the '60s with one of Hollywood's emerging young stars, possibly Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling or Alexander Skarsgard, according to an individual close to the production.

(As Illya Kuryakin)
