I know this probably doesn't warrant it's own thread but this is not about me, but someone that I have known for a very long time.

My friend Andrew Tuckwell (28) from Hampshire is lying in an Intensive Care Unit in Southampton General Hospital after being beaten within an inch of his life. He suffered severe head injuries after the attacker repeatedly stamped on his head after he tried to split up a fight.

After being resusitated at the scene, he was rushed to hospital where he now lays in a medically induced coma. Every prayer may breathe that little bit more of life into him so we, and his family can have him back.

His life is hanging in the balance.

He is one of a few decent men I know, and by no means deserves this.

Thanks.

I do hope he recovers fully. Have the police arrested the thug that did this to him?

I shall think of you and your good friend. What is the world coming to when something dreadful like this happens? I do hope your friend pulls through.

What's this world coming to? Where a decent man does something for the common good and gets beaten up to a pulp for it.

Makes me bloody sick!

There is so much goodness in this world, yet there is an equal amount of evil.

As I said, this story makes me sick to the bone.

My thoughts and prayers are with this chap you mentioned.

Having said that, in dangerous situations the best thing is to mind your own business nowadays - especially on the streets, and more so when it comes to breaking up fights you might not be involved in yourself.

There are so many places that have indeed become ever so risky to be nowadays too.

One needs to know where these places are of course. And the best thing is total avoidance.

Anticipate particular dangerous developments.

My rule is keep your awareness up at all times and in every potentially threatening situation always look for avoidance rather than confrontation.

Why put yourself in a situation where you have no options?

It's far better to try and identify potential trouble and take avoiding action - its not cowardice.

In the army we call it common sense.

I am not criticising what your brave friend did (I wouldn't dare) I am just pointing out that sometimes it pays better to walk away rather than get into trouble because this story just reminded me how cold the world outside ones home can be sometimes.

Again though, my thoughts go out to him Goodnight.

We fantasize about being like our screen hero, then the unscripted real world intrudes and shows what happens to decent people who try to de-escalate conflicts. As they say, no good deed goes unpunished.

I wish Andrew well and a speedy recovery, Goodnight. He may have suffered, but he is the hero of this incident - not the bloody-minded bully who assaulted him.

Thank you for your kind comments.

I have copied this from the facebook page...
‎"the ventilator is no longer breathing for him, but still has it as a back up. He has been agitated today so the nurses are going to sedate him again and then try and bring him back round in a couple of days. Yesterday seemed more positive than today but he is slowly moving in the right direction"

Miles Miservy, I have heard that the police have arrested an 18 year old boy. Apparently he was drunk at the time as well, it is very scary how violent some people get after having a few drinks.

Harry Fawkes, I agree with everything you said there. Although on the avoidance issue I think that if you were to see someone in real danger it would be awful to make no attempt to stop it. Even if you decided to make no physical or verbal contact, you could still phone the police or something.

I don't mean "you" as in you personally, but anybody.

I myself have been doing karate for a few years now, and I go the gym 5/6 times a week, but I would do anything to avoid having to fight to begin with. Especially if they have a knife, which lots of young people carry these days. Even every black belt I've ever asked has said that if they pull out a knife, if you can, just run.

Bond may have successfully defended himself bare handed against someone with a knife (in QOS), but as AMC Hornet said films are one thing but real life is completely different. In real life there are no rehersals and you don't know where the next strike is coming from.

Jeff007, I am sorry to hear of your brother's friend, carrying a knife and attacking in cold blood is such a cowardly act.

Andrew is also a very good friend of my brother's and my mum used to look after him at playschool when he was about 3/4 years old.

I agree. You can't do nothing. You feel even worse of doing nothing rather than trying to stop the fight or call the police. I remember I was on a Internet station once and someone shouted at the recepcionist, a young girl. I saw red, but I did nothing. Believe me, I felt really stupid, I said, [censored], I'm supposed to be a man, to do something. Someday a bloke like that will shout to my girlfriend* and I'd stay there like a stupid!

*If I have a girlfriend someday! ;)

Sorry to hear this, Goodnight. Breathing on his own is a good sign. I hope that being sedated gives him some needed time to begin the healing process a bit quicker.

I have copied and pasted a couple of posts from his facebook support page

"Hi all, one week on.....the ventilator has been completely removed and Andy is breathing unaided, which is great news. He is still thrashing about in bed, which is not nice to see but normal, hopefully will open his eyes at some point, just a waiting game now. about to go back in and see him so any changes and I'll let u all know."

"Well good news and bad news. Good news is he is out of ICU and off most machines. :) bad news he is still unconcious and has not opened eyes properly. :( Been told they have no idea how long he will be like this. Really distressing to see him like this with no clear way forward. Let's all keep praying and thinking of tuck"

I hope that the 18 year old they have arrested is tried under 'Attempted murder'.

My question is; during those few moments in time while he repeatedly stamped on Andrew's head whilst he lay helpless on the ground, did the attcker care whether Andrew lived or died?

The anwser: NO

Andrew could have so easily died form his injuries, whoever was swift enough to quickly phone an ambulance was a big player in his survivial. This is why I strongly believe this qualifies as attempted murder.

That fact that the attacker was drunk at the time is no excuse at all. If drink makes you violent.....don't drink, get some self control and get a grip!! I've been very drunk before.....but I didn't put anybody in a coma.

Please keep thinking of Andrew.

Thanks.

You said it. YOU said it!!!

Same happens with the yunkie boys in my country, they're serial killers who ruin a family by killing a teenager and under absurd "they need recovery" or "they stole for hunger" statements they go to rehab centers where they're released within two days and they start drugging/robbing/killing the next day!
And let's better don't speak about the mafia-like government of this bitch, who takes out all the security forces from the borders helping the drug dealers to get the drug in our country!

Dear Andrew has virtually fully covered in the physical sense, but mentally not so good, he says things that don't make sense. This may a long time for his brain to (hopefully) go back to normal.

Such a shame his family have been put through all this stuff just because some drunk little boy lost his temper. So many little boys (and yes they are boys not men) and girls have only one sole interest in getting as pissed as possible, and stuff like this happens!

Where did all the gents go?

I hope karma does exist, that boy is better off dead anyway.

This from Tuesday's edition of my regional newspaper. It tells of the struggle Andrew and (especially) his family have been through since this happened. There is a photo that shows just how badly bruised his face was, it's also very upsetting to read that the people that came to his intial rescue, were pretty sure he was dead.

Andrew is re-learning things that you and I take for granted, such as getting dressed and walking up and down the stairs.

I have heard that the boy who commited this is looking at going behind for about 12 - 15 years. I don't have a lot of faith in the British justice system., but I truly hope that I am proved wrong.

I will also post when the trial is over to let you know the punishment the boy recieves.

Thanks.

This text is copied from Andrew's brother in law Mark's facebook page..

"Hi everyone, I hope you are all well, just to update you all on Andy and the idiot who attacked him. Andy is doing well, he is in hospital later this month to have an operation on his jaw. His jaw had multiple brakes and fractures which left him unable to bite correctly, this operation will sort this out. He will be back in hospital for around 3 days. As for Lewis Packham he was again in court last week for additional charges, 2 of ABH and 1 of GBH, the jury found him guilty on all accounts and he will be sentenced for all assaults next month after pre-sentence reports. There is a write up in the echo today. Thanks to all who look after Andy when he is out and about he’s starting to become the old Tucky again. I will keep you updated on sentencing Mark"

Thank you Casino, I appreciate your kind words..

I spoke to Andrew on Facebook about an hour ago asking how his mouth is and if it hurts. He said that it's ok and that he can have the braces taken out mid March. I told him not to let his braces stop him having any fun. :)

http://www.dailyecho...l_over_attacks/

This is from my local newspaper, if you read the article it's somewhat apparent that Packham is an extremely violent individual.

I hope when he's in prison that his fellow inmates [censored] the life out of him..all day..everyday.

Admittedly that is overly vulgar, but I don't care...I hope someone kicks his head in one day.

Just read on facebook about 10 minutes ago, from Andrew's brother in law Mark...

"Just returned from court where Lewis Packham was sentenced for the attack on Andy and on another assault on a young lady. He was sentenced to 13 years for Andy, but this was reduced to 8 ½ years because he pleaded guilty ………. He was also sentenced 18 months for the other attack but this is to run concurrently so this means he will be at our majesty’s pleasure for 10 years but we all know that will be around 5. Andy is still on the road to recovery, will never be the ‘old’ Andy because of the injury to the head but we will keep working towards improving his life, seeing if he can find a flat, at some point, and back to work which is something he is desperate for. Thank you for everyone’s help and support it is very much appreciated. Mark"

Thankyou for your support...
