He gave his films something that most composers never could: a warmth that transcended the scenes he was writing for. For me, it was this warmth that connected to the listener. I was recently given a compilation "best of" type album... half the pieces were for films I have not seen... yet I instantly felt the power, the vibrancy, the connection... that warmth. It's always brightened event eh worst of my days and made me feel happy.
His death is a true loss not only to the world of film music, but the world in general.
You will be missed, Mr. Barry.

Driving from point A to point B yesterday morning, I had probably his most poignant Bond score on the car CD player, the very same On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I don't know why I picked it out from my collection to play, but I just did.Type "John Barry" in google news and... : "I was trying to impose on Lazenby the suaveness, the humour, and I really overdid the score" ; that appears, in the french google news anyway. It's a John Barry's quote about one of his Bond's soundtrack (and perhaps the best) : On her majesty's secret service.
Definitely a great musician, and a wonderful person. Thank you John, your music is forever.
David Arnold has written today that it didn't matter if you were in an ordinary car stuck on the M25, with Barry's music on in the background its as if you were in an Aston Martin. Certainly true in my experience!

Even with John Williams or Goldsmith, Morricone or Bernstein, you know where to start... but with Barry the catalogue is just so beautifully vast I have already heard countless tracks today that are new to me.

And I would also urge folk to catch up with music Barry did for INDECENT PROPOSAL, ENIGMA, THE SCARLET LETTER, CHAPLIN, HIGH ROAD TO CHINA, THE KNACK, PEGGY SUE GOT MARRIED, CRY THE BELOVED COUNTRY (where he uses his own ZULU cues very aptly) and RAISE THE TITANIC, ROBIN AND MARIAN, KING KONG, PLAYING BY HEART and FRANCES.
I'd also recommend KING RAT, THE IPCRESS FILE, WALKABOUT, ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND, SEANCE ON A WET AFTERNOON, THE SPEcıalısT, THE QUILLER MEMORANDUM, THE LION IN WINTER, NEVER LET GOT, BEAT GIRL, THE DAY OF THE LOCUST, THE LAST VALLEY, THE DEEP, THE COTTON CLUB, THE WHISPERERS, THE L-SHAPED ROOM, THE WRONG BOX, THE APPOINTMENT, THE DOVE, GAME OF DEATH and PETULIA.

BBC Breakfast TV news confirmed this sad news some five minutes ago. The UK has lost one of its most distinguished musicians and composers. We on Cbn all applaud him for the massive contribution he made to the Bond series, but of course his film music ranged way beyond that. Personally, I mourn the loss of a man whose music I have enjoyed for over 40 years.
RIP, John Barry 1933-2011.
I agree. As I got older I appreciated his non Bond music and the man was a geniouse. R I P John.

Beautiful score. Not a bad film, either. Rachel Weisz was very good in it.SWEPT FROM THE SEA, GAME OF DEATH, HANOVER STREET ... the list thankfully goes on ....

Barry had the ability to find humour in the darkest material. I think his work will endure.

Call me insane if you want but I believe he HAS gone to another place, if you know what I mean.

Very interesting, and it shows both the power and the efficiency of Barry style. But I've always prefered From Russia with love's soundtrack to On her Majesty's secret service's, I find it (From Russia with love's) even more powerful and majestic than... On her majesty's secret service's music. Tracks like "James Bond with bongos" ; "Smersh in action" ; "Death of Kerim" ; "Death of Grant" ... no really it's my favorite soundtrack, it's perfect.
Barry was a musician who was able to save a movie only with his music, and when the film was already excellent and John's music came, the result was wonderful, and the word is not enough to describe all those feelings. "Fight at Kobe dock" ; "He's dangerous" ; "Necros attacks" ; ... He succeeded all he did.
No, no... Really, Bond has lost a part of his legend today...
The soundtrack of Bond 23 is very expected now...

But, Ian Fleming apart, there was only one genius - John Barry.
As we Yorkshiremen say to each other, "I'll see thee".

Listened to my two favourites today in tribute. "Raise The Titanic" and "On Her Majesty's Secret Service"
Thanks John for everything.

It's very hard to describe the feelings evoked by Barry's music. There's no doubt he had a distinct style, which I've seen some use the word 'warmth' to describe. I feel that word, (along with many others, obviously) is an apt one to characterize his music. My condolences to his family, and my many thanks to John Barry for all of his works and contributions to cinema.

I don't think there is another Bond music master like Barry. Not even close.
