Would be OK with the Mathis-type charcater as well, but I would tread carefully when it comes to resurrecting Q.

I wouldn't hold much credence to any possible character description at this stage in the game. "Good" could be anything - good to whom?
True, considering that nobody's heard anything about a script being complete yet. As far as I know, they're only getting started on it.

Another possibility could be that Simon Russell Beale gets the blue print role of a "Kerim Bey" character in Bond XXIII.

Cheers, Zencat. I wouldn't mind this at all. The only thing is though, I hope his talents aren't wasted like Mathieu Amalric's were. The Craig Era has a problem of not making the villains menacing enough. Fair enough. Le Chiffre was brilliant, but every other villian in Casino and Quantum were average at best.
The villains always seem to be too underdeveloped.
I agree. Dominic Greene was hugely underdeveloped. Most of QOS was underdeveloped though. That film should have had a running time of atleast 2 hours and 15 minutes and these extra minutes shouldn't have contained any action. The focus should have been on plot and character development.
I wouldn't like Q to be under 30.

I dunno. The idea of an under-30 Q isn't necessarily an awful one. I wouldn't want someone who's, like, 23 playing Q, but someone who's in their late twenties may not necessarily be a bad move. I'm not a major techie or anything but judging by interactions with friends who are involved with that sort of thing, a lot of the people involved seem to be relatively young. There's also the possibility of not making Q the head of Q Branch off the bat. Have someone else, someone older be technically in charge of the department, and have Q just be lead developer/concept guy or something. Definitely wouldn't want to see an old Q though. Early-to-mid forties at oldest, if even that.

When you look at the ages that Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Sergy Brin, Larry Page, and Mark Zuckerberg were when they created products and services that revolutionized our world (early to mid-20's), I think it's very realistic to believe that Q, in 2012, would be someone at a similar point in his/her life. Which is why I would hope that Simon Russell Beale was not "Q". It would also give the series a chance to use Q's age to breathe some fresh life into the character, and we could avoid direct comparisons between Desmond Llewelyn and John Cleese. In fact, avoiding humor altogether when dealing with the new Q would be preferred.
"In fact, avoiding humor altogether when dealing with the new Q would be preferred."
I would prefer this too but generally I just don't like seeing younger characters in the Bond universe. I'd prefer if they were all older than 30 or atleast look like they are. The Bond girls are different but I like them to look like they are atleast 26, 27. I'd rather Boothroyd be atleast 35. I do not want a Q who looks 20 years younger than Craig. It just doesn't bode well with me. I get sick of seeing young people on all these ghastly reality television shows too. Just incase you are wondering, I will be 34 (not 74 LOL) on the 13th. I felt the same way about all this when I was 24.

Interesting. I find your posts Mr Zorin quite entertaining as they make me think. and your right the article describing Mr. Beale's role as a good guy is vague as it could mean good for bond or good for a villian. Though assuming he is good for Bond and judging by his relationship with Mendes I'd assume he is signed to play a Kerim Bay/Rene Mathis kind of contact. Which says two things one such a character exists and the other thing to take away if this is true the script has to be potentially at least at first draft stage.Could be wrong, but if I was Sam Mendes and I was directing BOND 23 I would not resign one of my most regular, valued and intuitive actor friends to the role of Q.

And whilst the idea of casting someone like Simon Russell Beale for a BEY clone makes a certain initial sense I suggest the eventual palette of characters in Bond 23 may not automatically feature a BEY / MATHIS figure - for no other reason than we have had that recently. Beale is one of British theatres contemporary figureheads. He can no doubt be up to the task for a lot of varied roles and character requirements.

There are lots of first drafts on a Bond and Bond 23 is no doubt beyond that point.

We shouldn't have a Mathis clone because they shouldn't have killed him off in QOS. Big mistake. He was the best character we had had in a Bond film in a long time.
