I've always been pretty tolerant of A VIEW TO A KILL. But if I must be honest, I believe that THE SPY WHO LOVED ME makes the 1985 movie look like chopped liver.

I won't bore you all by reiterating my own top ten favorites - I will just reiterate that I personally regard TSWLM to be in my top 6, and AVTAK among my bottom 3, superior only to CR '67. And this is my own opinion, based on my own observations, not on what is currently other people's popular opinion. I was there since DAF, so I was there for both TSWLM and AVTAK. Many of my favorites tend to be other people's dregs but so what? I'm sure EON would appreciate my appreciation, just as they must appreciate those who still hold FRWL, GF and YOLT in highest regard.

I won't even bother telling you what I like about my favorites - half of you will say I'm wrong anyway. And I don't have to agree with your choices; I'm just glad that you're all fellow Bond fans, and that we occasionally agree on something.

Hooray for George Lazenby, Roger Moore, George Martin, Bill Conti, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan, David Arnold, Lee Tamahori and all the other current underdogs - you may change your minds and join me in celebrating their contibutions some day.

Yes, I pretty much agree with you Prince Kamal Khan re Spy vs AVTAK
I would give AVTAK Zorin, Tibbett and John Barry's score
Everything else "Spy" wins for me.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I think AVTAK is probably the worst Bond film ever. The action is flat and Bond breezes through most enemies. The "California Girls" segment is probably the one moment in the series I truly HATE. It recycles lots of things from other films while not improving on them. The plot isn't too exciting or exotic as it thinks it is. So much of the script seems thrown in: lets have Bond sleep with a Russian spy, have him sleep with Mayday, the PTS is flat and stupid, the butterfly murder scene is really lame, etc.

What I will give the film is Roger Moore is very handsome even as a middle age Bond. Christopher Walken played Max Zorin (a very lame character)to the best of his abilities, even making him somewhat iconic. And I think the theme song and score are very nice.

TSWLM is one of the few perfect Bond films for me. The only Moore film that is perfect for me. Its exotic, exciting, innovative, well-directed and Moore is at his best. The cast is incredible. XXX, Jaws and Stromberg are such an amazing ensemble for Bond. Its a cliche to praise the film... WHO CARES? Its great and deserves much love. The theme song is a favorite for me and while the score isn't the best thing ever, it surely is original and appropriate for its time and sort of fun.

So much of TSWLM works because its paced perfectly and it knows when to go for humor and when to go for suspense and thrills. It reuses elements from YOLT, but it improves on them exponentionally. I never cared for YOLT much anyway.

Loved the idea of creating an earthquake (scientifically there must be some credibility to the idea, no?)

It's a complete rip-off of Superman: The Movie!

Interesting comparison - I've never really thought of pitting these two films against eachother. At the end of the day, I'm just not that into either one.

AVTAK has a far, far better score, Grace Jones being odd, Christopher Walken being odder, and some wonderful little sequences like the PTS, the finale and Zorin's party at his estate. It's also dreadfully paced and some the "thrills" it offers (Fire engine chase? "My car! Oh!") are simply embarrassing.

TSWLM has Roger Moore in peak form as Bond, some great action sequences and a great Bond girl in Anya. It's also overlong with a tedious final battle, Stromberg is boring, there are one too many "amusing" moments with Jaws, and the musical score just leaves a bad aftertaste. Especially the awfulness that accompanies the van bouncing around in the desert.

Overall though, I prefer AVTAK by a few hairs - Mainly due to Barry's outstanding score, Walken's kooky performance and the strong finale with the blimp.

I've always loved TSWLM. Roger looks great, the choice and range of locations is fantastic and Ken Adam's sets are magnificent. Elements such the Lotus and Jaws are original and inventive. After a run of Guy Hamilton films, a change in director (albeit one who had already done a Bond film) makes a real difference. The film seems huge and everything is entertainingly OTT, but with the right level of humour
AVTAK, on the other hand, seems a little tired and derivative. It really is just more of the same. Everybody ,bar Roger, seems to be having a good time and is clearly revelling being in a "Bond Film". Rog, on the other hand, seems to be simply going through the motions and barely enjoying himself. For all people criticise Connery for sleepwalking through YOLT, or simply turning up for the money in DAF, I think that this could equally be levelled at Roger here. I can still remember the lack of enthusiasm Rog showed when promoting the film. Grace Jones and Tanya Roberts are embarrassingly wooden and the scenes at Ascot, featuring an elderly MI6 looking like an OAP's day out just make me cringe.

Sadly, Rog was too old for Bond imo. The film had the cringe factor which for a 007 isnt good.

A View To A Kill is far superior to the over hyped TSWLM.
