I think that's largely because le Carre is writing le Carre's characters. Here, though, Deaver is writing Fleming's.Nobody brings up the same concerns when LeCarre writes characters from wherever, or any other author of note for that matter.

Faulks was a dissapointment and his Britishness is not in question, but he screwed up royally. I am more willing to give the the thriller writer a shot at this point.
Truth is we cannot judge a thing from this point except for exesting books ... and even that is no real indication of quality (see Faulks).

No. I'll just pop in periodically like I did in the manuscript thread. I have a life, trust me.Oh, Righty, are you really going to countdown for 200 days?

If anyone is expecting Deaver to write EXACTLY like Mr. Fleming then prepare for disappointment. If it's because he's American then some of you should be (somewhat) ashamed. I trust IFP to make the right decisions with Ian's character for good as well as ill. We all really shouldn't be worried or overly concerned with the direction of the new series when we haven't even been given a teaser of what's to come. I don't really care if May is either from India or Pakistan or a three foot demented Irishwoman who occasionally talks to leprechauns in her sleep...I think Mr. Deaver knows what he's doing and that the end result will(possibly) be one of the greatest Bond stories since OHMSS.
Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I've got a feeling that this series will be incredible and will hopefully wash away the Benson era and the Faulk's mishap. But don't sweat the small stuff, be paitent and just wait and see.

"Pip pip, cheerio, and all that sort of rot. Look, it's the Queen!"
See. It's easy.
Don't forget to begin every other sentence with, "Oh, I say...", and toss in a lot of "bloody"s.
I want Bond to be as British as possible - without resorting to parody or stereotype, of course - but the truth, as I see it, is that our two cultures have become much closer, at least on a surface level, than they were even thirty years ago, let alone in Fleming's day. I trust Jeffrey Deaver, as a proven skilled and smart writer, to avoid giving 007 too much of an "American" perspective and sensibiity - after all, he did quite well with the Germans in Garden of Beasts - and as for getting the occasional factoid wrong, authors do that with their own cultures every day.
One of my major problems with Gardner's stories is the author's tendency to have some character, out of the blue, say, "Or, as our American cousins would put it...", seemingly every few pages. Toward the end, he even had M doing it...which sounded very wrong. Whether these frequent references to American culture and vernacular were the result of JG's having lived in America for so long, or were somehow prompted by his American editors, I have no idea and I really don't care. That I would not expect from Deaver.

My contributions to the CBn Forums over the past 7 years as well as my contributions as a member of the Team (2004-2008) are well documented. If you take a moment to look at my history here, you'll find that I've been a positive contributor to this community.Speaking purely from a personal point of view, I do wish you wouldn't.

I have nothing substantial to add to this topic at the moment due to the fact that there's nothing new to discuss. Therefore a simple and innocent countdown is not unacceptable.

I quite like checking in occasionally and seeing how long it is until the book comes up - get's me excited all over again every time I see the countdown.

Your countdown contributions are moronic. Having nothing substantial to offer does not determine the need to offer anything; I am not sure why you draw a line between these two factors.
Your other contributions are, I am sure, of a counter commensurately intelligent level. Probably the envy of all other contributors.

And, for the record, I don't mind the occasional reminder of how many days we have left. Occasional being the key word. Every 50 or so. I'm surprised 165 days have past so quickly.

Upon reflection and for the record, I would actually like daily updates if there is an absence of anything else to report.

198 days.
(Sorry, Righty, beat you to it.)

A point of clarity though; if I happen to report one day my aunt had her carbuncle removed, would this in and of itself constitute a report worthy of negating the need for that particular day's countdown? Clearly this is news unconnected to Deaver but I am guessing the dictum must be relaxed in this case.

Indeed, would reports pertaining to anything other than just Deaver and his book be considered null and void to this agreement?
(You see I am applying myself diligently to this task...?)

I'm surprised we haven't seen a pre-order page appear on the U.S. Amazon yet. They have pre-order pages for Deaver books beyond Project X. Maybe they don't want to list until there's a proper title?

Yeah, the Amazon.co.uk one is the same one we've already seen on the Project X website. As I said on facebook - that is awesome, possibly more awesome than the UK version.
