Eon Productions release statement suspending development

Plus, Daniel Craig backs producers’ decision to halt development

Meanwhile, MGM to seek sixth debt extension amid pressure to sell off The Hobbit rights

Both Daniel Craig and Sam Mendes remain committed to Bond 23

From ComingSoon

007 producers, Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli of EON Productions, today announced they have suspended development on the next James Bond film previously scheduled for release 2011/2012.

"Due to the continuing uncertainty surrounding the future of MGM and the failure to close a sale of the studio, we have suspended development on 'Bond 23' indefinitely. We do not know when development will resume and do not have a date for the release of 'Bond 23,'" stated Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli jointly.

Wow. This will probably sweep the board clean, pretty much. Hope things get resolved soon.

I guess we're potentially in Dalton territory now.

Gloriously enough we can all stop talking about who might do what. They have a script on ice now, which they may or may not use and that's it.

Just read this on MI6, and I guess we kind of saw this coming. This should prove to be very bad for the time being. It's not surprising, but it is still really disappointing to read. How can this studio not function, remotely? It is extremely vexing.

...

If you look at a lot of Zorin's comment he was extremly ambiguous over wether Daniel Craig would return for another one or not.

It pains me to say this but i think the curse of the even numbered bond strikes again.

So here is an honest question I want the smarter members to answer is this entirely MGM's fault or if Eon had gotten working on bond 23 in 2008 could we be seing the third daniel craig bond film this fall?

Just as a caution - I wouldn't draw too many parallels with the early 90s and Dalton's departure. Craig is much more successful and I doubt MGM will remain unresolved for much more than a year. Still, anything could happen.

Might I, ever so gently and politely, suggest an excellent webthingy called Google? They have a lovely news search facility, which allowed me to find the link above in a matter of 47.3 seconds.

Bloomberg story for good measure, quoting the EON release.

I'm going to live in hope. The next deadline is in May. If we're LUCKY, then MGM might just get sold. If not, then we're in very, very big trouble.

Why the hell did MGM need a lot of extensions, anyway?

Trying to track this back to the original press release posting. So far this is as close as I can find.

Interesting to see a Press Release from just Eon. It's almost always a combo of Eon and studio. But I guess it's understandable.

Damn MGM.

So Craig could potentially become the next Dalton?

Kinda sad and if Craig actually come's back he will be 45+ years by the time it releases! And unlike Roger Moore this guy hasn't been aging very well lately

Disastrous. The ineptitude displayed in running that studio has finally bled down to the worst, possible result.

I guess there's no reason things couldn't turn around in a month, or more, or less. This could also be a bit of rhetorical strong-arming by EON, perhaps? Issuing strong words of "indefinite suspension" perhaps to get the business interests moving a little quicker in resolving the situation? Forcing them to wake up on the issue, and see the urgency?

No one, no one involved wants there to not be a Bond 23. It's a cash cow. Perhaps EON is as fed up as we are, and as this statement will no doubt generate monstrous backlash in the fan and movie-going community, they're hoping that backlash will prompt quicker action on the other side of MGM. The appetite for Bond remains intense, as usual - maybe this is a move in hopes of demonstrating just how intense that appetite is?

Am I being overly optimistic?

But damnit. Damn you, rich asswipes, ruining a studio and jeopardizing a franchise you obviously don't care about nearly as much as the rest of us losers!

I wont believe this until I see a scan of the actual document released to the press from EON HQ.

If it's true we all share the pain together. What a party popper! B)

The press release was published on PR Newswire. This is one of the places where major companies publish press releases. It moved between 3:45 p.m. and 4 p.m. New York Time. It's real.

What I find surprising is that they started the production in the first place, come to think of it. They've blown some cash at least, whilst the studio was in limbo.

Sometimes I curse Bond's luck for having gotten stuck with a studio with such a tumultuous history of ownership and financial crises. But then I wonder if any studio would have been safe from these sorts of ups and downs during an almost five-decade run. Are there any flick-savvy types out there who could suggest a studio that, in a better world, would have been more stable and therefore possibly more hassle-free for "Lucky" Jim Bond?

The word indefinitely isn't always bad though. In sports they use the term all the time and it doesn't always have to mean forever or even a long time. Here's hoping.
