Me myself like the idea of the ppk as bonds sidearm

remember this is covert ops we are talking about

The P99 bond got from Wai-Lin in TND is a millitary pistol I could understand it if this was a war series but its not it is a covert spy series

The P99 is basically a 9mm Pistol (for does who dont know what I am talking about)

But the ppk should have returned in Casino Royale the movie is all about hidden guns silencers because your at a casino

I love the Walther PPK, especially when it is silenced. Bond is no noisy action hero, who uses machine guns and rocket lauchers and all that sort of thing. I'm for the classic silenced pistol.

Very happy to see the PPK return. That P99 was ridiculous.

I'm fine with the PPK returning, whereas the PP9 was pretty ugly gun, and looked more like one of those plastic game controllers you find at arcades.

What about the classic Walther LP53 returning for Craig's posters?

I heard that in some scenes of CR (in the first killing, I think, or perhaps in other part of the movie), Bond actually used the PPK and not the P99.

Well, I think that some members in this forum that own the "Bond On Set Filming Casino Royale", told that in the picture of Bond in the bathroom, they could see him with the PPK, but I could be wrong as I don't have that book.

It good the PPK made a return, but I would go with the Raymond Benson way in The Facts Of Death. There Bond carryed two guns, but NOT in the John Woo way or use it that way, and that is good. From what I remember, he had one in his duffal bag and one was in the car. That how it should be in the movies, so he'll have the PPK and the P99. That way he can decide which one to use depending on the situation.

And the Walther PP and PPK weren't used by the Nazis during WWII? I suggest you look up the history of these guns because you'll find that they were issued to the Nazi Party and Hitler killed himself with a PPK.

Interesting topic, 007domanator.

As somewhat of a firearms enthusiast myself, this is actually a matter I have paid a fair amount of thought. Although in the modern market there are perhaps better options out there, I should first like to state that it is still my firm belief that the cinematic Bond should use a Walther.

The Walther PPK is one of the most venerable handgun designs in the world. Just as the 1911 has proven useful for almost 100 years after its introduction, the Walther PPK is still reliable and still relevant in my book. The P99 on the other hand (although an exceptionally fine gun, and on my list of things to get around to buying one of these days) is not particularly well suited for Bond by virtue of being too large. As you have already pointed out, it is essentially a full framed combat handgun, which doesn't seem much suited to a spy, does it? It is concealable, but then most handguns are if you put your mind to it. My problem with the P99 is that it gives off a sort of "action hero" vibe that doesn't quite suite the suave, sophisticated gentleman spy of the classic movies.

If Bond must update, he should be using the Walther PPS or (at a stretch) the new Walther PK380.

Here is the Walther PK380

And here is the Walther PPS (next to a PPK)

The Walther PPS is a 9mm handgun roughly the same size as the PPK itself. The PK380 is chambered in 9mm Kurz (.380 ACP in America), which is the same round the modern PPK tends to be chambered in. James Bond carried a Walther PPK chambered in 7.65mm (.32 ACP) for years.

Good point, particularly as Fleming also made Bond a multi-gun guy:

-Beretta, Police Positive and Colt in CR

-Beretta and Colt in MR

-Walther and Smith&Wesson in DN

-Walther and Colt in GF

-(presumably) Walther and Smith&Wesson in TSWLM

Makes sense to have a larger caliber stuffed away in the car, although it also doubles the risk of discovery.

But the part in CR really was most revealing where the potential concealability of a P99 is concerned. It's a big, ungainly and chunky piece of equipment, even more so with a silencer attached. Really not the piece one would want to have to hide for any length of time, apart from maybe under a heavy, long coat and layers of winter clothing.

I'd something prefer like the FN model 1910. Both the PPS and PK380, while smaller than the PP9, are just (if not even more) as clunky, square, and ugly as it was. Bond needs an elegant gun.

This is more or less why I would feel perfectly happy to keep the PPK. For practical purposes either gun could be argued superior to the PPK (though the PK380 has simply not been on the market long enough to know whether it is as reliable), but neither has the aesthetic appeal or the iconic charm.

FN makes a fine gun, although the model 1910 was discontinued in the 1980's if I remember correctly.

Why not have SIS equip Bond with a gun especially custom designed by their own gunsmith? Something slim and light, easy to point and easy to shoot?

Would of course be one chance less to show a proper brand label. And would of course have to use some basic design already familiar (the wheel is not likely to be re-invented, you know). Perhaps something based on the Colt Commander or the Heckler&Koch P7?

Yes, why not? Although the long barrel might have to see a chop and the entire gun would have to be chambered for a larger caliber. But as it's film and not reality we're talking here why shouldn't the designers come up with a sufficiently looking derivate?

EDIT: Ah, I see. The second gun with the silencer already sports a shortened barrel. Nice design!

I love the PPK. While I am particularly attached to the P99, the PPK is a much better gun for Bond. There used to be a site that talked about what would be an appropriate gun for Bond. It was created around the time of Goldeneye. It had the P99 on the list. I wish I could remember the site.

If not the PPK, my bid goes for a Makarov, either PM or PMM. The Walther PP was used as the basic design template for the earliest Makarov and the influence is still a bit apparent. Plus, it really is a better gun than the PK. Not much heavier than the PPK Bond carries (at least, the PPK as per Fleming's books), slightly larger but still easily concealable, generally better stopping power, and its effective range is 10m higher than that of the PPK. The PM's magazine is the same as Bond's PPK, and the PMM can hold four more rounds. The only real downside to the PM and PMM are the fact that they only take the 9x18mm Makarov, whereas the PPK can take .32 ACP, 9x18mm Ultra, .25 ACP, .30 ACP, or the .22 Long. So there's a bit more options for reloading there than the PM or PMM.

Still, I'd like the PPK to return, but if it doesn't, give him a PM/PMM.
