He's already played a highly expository mentor role in those Harry Potter films hasn't he? That'd be kind of tired.

Bernard Hill would work.

I've wanted Bernard Hill forever, but I'm beginning to love the idea of Alan Dale as well. I think he'd do a stupendous job as Judi's successor.

Whenever that happens.

And I've just remembered another suggestion I made over in the Judi Dench thread, one I still very much stand behind, odd though it may seem: Sylvester McCoy

I'd love to see McCoy in Bond. But I see him fitting more into the Quatermaster/Boothroyd/Q role. Being eccentric shouldn't be too much of a stretch.

My current suggestion for M is Ken Stott. He's just old enough for there to be an age difference between Bond and M, but young enough to allow him to stay for a few films.

As stated on another thread over here, I would love Ciarán Hinds as M. Bernard Hill would be great as well though.

I'm beginning to like this place more and more B) Great to see some McCoy love.

I'd be happy to see a new M, preferably male but if they get the right actress I wouldn't complain. Although part of me does long to see a Bernard Lee/Robert Brown type M again. My choice would be Edward Fox, he's already played M in NSNA and I think he was one of the high points, he just didn't get enough screen time. He's got the stern British authority figure personality. Although after slating Daniel Craig's portrayal of Bond, I don't think we'll be seeing him in a Bond movie anytime soon. Damn him for having an opinion.

He's my favourite Doctor, M-Z. You won't hear any negativity towards McCoy from me. Hat and brolly on standby. B)

I can feel my r's start to roll. I can actually picture McCoy as a Alec McCowen type Q figure, I think that would be a good approach for him.

Just once before I die (or he does) I would like to see Sean Connery play M. I know it's dream casting, but what a salty, conniving old Admiral he would make! (But I won't boycott the series if EON doesn't do it.)

Have to say, I've been warming to the notion of Bernard Hill as M. Whether or not he'd do it is up to debate, but the idea is beginning to find a place in my mind.

For M? Only remember him from a 'Carry On...' film, IIRC. Couldn't judge if he'd fit my expectations. Hinds would be my favourite right at the moment (but that might change any minute).

Bernard Cribbins.

He's 81 years old. He's great in the Carry On films, and lovely to watch in Doctor Who. Hell, he even made my cry, in END OF TIME: PART 2. He's a comedy actor, who occasionally shines in serious roles. I personally think Wilfred Mott is a beautifully written character.

At the end of the day though. Cribbins is too old, and I don't think he has enough acting ability to be particularly powerful, let alone a figure of authority.

Bad picture, but like I mentioned before, Hinds would be perfect. Great actor, can be charming and tough. Perfect for an M for whom Bond has personal respect, not only for his rank. Btw, as a dreamcast I want Zuleikha Robinson as Bond girl, and James Purefoy , Kevin McKidd and Ray Stevenson as other OO-agents who are killed on the mission in the PTS searching for "The Hildebrand Rarity".

I think a non-statement making assigning of M would be welcome. Happy that '24' has lead the way with black presidents and female presidents and talented youngsters but think that a sort of blatantly old school, retro, male 'sea dog' would be a welcome return to old 007 film form.

A pity in some respects as I too believe Dench has come into her own with the Craig era. I put this more down to intelligent scripting and scenarios than any reflection on her undoubted abilities.

No one comes to mind though - but then they never have in these casting conversations where Eon have and take the pick of the unknown world.

Male M? Perhaps. Different M? Deffo!! I actually thought she worked well in CR but otherwise its the same schtick every time. It's getting so so tiresome. Please can we have a new one? Please...

Heh, Ian McShane would certainly work wouldn't he?! That would be cool casting B)

As 'Spooks" or ('MI-5' as it's known in the US) is now being cancelled due to the idiots running the BBC B) , Peter Firth who plays 'Harry Pearce' so marvelously, will be free for other offers.

I cannot think of anyone else who could play M at this point with such icy disdain and smart a r s e quips as he.

Allow me to second (or whatever) the previous nominations.

Sam Neill
Patrick Stewart

and allow me to add

Timothy Dalton: as Bond he was sometimes curt and frosty with his dialog. Last time I saw him his hair was regal silver gray, he'd be great.

"Don't hand me that, 007. I've spent my time in the field as well." B)

At first when I read Timothy Dalton's name in your post I wasn't so sure, but then I pictured Bernard Lee in FRWL, and then I realized that Dalton would be a great choice for M.
