My initial attempt at a shortlist ran to thirty movies so I have curtailed it somewhat. In my current ten, I’ve tried to list what I consider some of the “best” movies of the decade to have been. Also, through general laziness, I’ve had to include a couple of honorary mentions of some favourites that I recognise as not necessarily being up to the standards of the others.

In chronological order:

AMELIE (2001)
HOTEL RWANDA (2004)
MILLION DOLLAR BABY (2004)
MUNICH (2005)
THE PRESTIGE (2006)
ZODIAC (2007)
THE DIVING BELL AND THE BUTTERFLY (2007)
SWEENEY TODD: THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET (2007)
IN BRUGES (2008)
WALL•E (2008)

Honorary Mentions: OCEAN’S ELEVEN (2001), CASINO ROYALE (2006), ONCE (2006), THE DARK KNIGHT (2008), THE WRESTLER (2008)

Zodiac is a terrific and very under-rated pic..JUST missed out on my top 10....

Glad to see some more appreciation of ZODIAC in this thread. I think it's possibly my favourite of the bunch. That or AMELIE.

I'm surprised to see so little love for The Lord of the Rings in this thread. Haven't seen the films in years myself, but I used to think they were all excellent. Maybe it's time for a re-watch.

It's always time to watch LOTR.

Are you kidding? Life's too short for LOTR. Swipe me, but even the closing credits on the extended editions go on for about twenty minutes.

I'm on Loomis' team on this one I'm afraid. Although I'm probably even more militant, as I expect he didn't give up on the series half way through the second film.

THERE WILL BE BLOOD

While I despise THERE WILL BE BLOOD, I note that Quentin Tarantino has called it the best film of the past five years.

His tastes are famously, um, esoteric though. I'm not saying this to disparage Blood though, which I haven't seen yet (though I own it).

The only great film of this decade that I can think of is Mulholland Dr.

Re. thread title, correct spelling is 'millennium'. Seems to be one of those words ('separate' is another) that causes problems for many people.

9) Crash

What the?

I'd probably list that under my least favourites.

I never really understood why Crash was such a "love it or hate it" film. Any body else either really love or really hate Crash?

I'd say it was pretty "meh" myself. It was perfectly watchable, but some of it (Ludacris' van, "invisible cloak", I'm-no-longer-racist-now-that-I-fell-down-the-stairs) did beggar belief. Not really a deserving Best Picture winner in my opinion, but what else is new?

CRASH is as subtle as its title suggests. To its credit, I believe that is the point. To its discredit, the point was already made by Mel Brooks in 1974, and that one was way more clever and fun.

Ok, now I'm sure my counter is working correctly. That is ELEVEN films, DR76. (Coincidentally, it's intersting to note that you made that post @ 11:11 am. I'm observant like that.)

You're only to list 10 films. Can I recommend that you remove ATTACK OF THE CLONES? And then remove the other STAR WARS prequel as penance for 1) insulting Harmsway earlier, and 2) listing any of the STAR WARS prequels to begin with.

No, I won't. Since when I have ever been in the habit of expressing my choices based on someone else's opinion? And I'm removing CROUCHING TIGER. If you don't like the SW Prequels, don't add it to your own list.

You know what... it'll be a cold day in hell when I let your opinion dictate my own.

I AM going to add them to my list!! ALL THREE OF THEM!

SO THERE!!!

2001: Ocean's Eleven
2002: The Bourne Identity
2003: Old School
2004: The Bourne Supremacy
