Just found this bit of information on IMDB. According to the article, Anthony Hopkins is being considered for a role as one of the villains. Does anyone know if this source is reliable? I thought it was interesting to ponder.

To quote (or mis-quote?) Claude Rains from "Casablanca" - "Round up the usual suspects". Sir Anthony has been a "usual suspect" on the next Bond villain shortlist for heaven-knows-how-long! His only main rival as the best Bond villain we never had is Kevin Spacey. Not to say that both wouldn't make decent bad guys, but I'll be surprised if this casting happens. And the red top tabloid entertainment "journalists" would be deeply disappointed if Hopkins was actually cast - they won't be able to run the bi-annual "Hannibal Lecter for Bond villain" rumour any more! :)

Its on digital spy as well. I would also be surprised if Hopkins is cast, and i'm not particularly excited at the prospect of him doing 23 either because it's too obvious.

I read once that Hopkins was sought for Goldeneye but turned it down for some reason, playing an agent who was Bond's mentor gone bad; the role was rewritten as Bond's best friend gone bad. And another story that Hopkins had been cast as the villain in TND but walked off the set after a few days because of the chaotic shoot, and now refuses to have anything to do with the Bond series. I have no idea how true any of that is. Does anyone know?

But yeah, Hopkins as a villain is way too obvious, and he's phoned in a number of performances lately. A villain played by Hopkins is now almost a tired cliche and shows a lack of originality.

Anthony Hopkins had been asked to star as the villain in Tomorrow Never Dies but turned it down, saying he'd already played a media mogul (I'm not sure what film he'd done that in). He was way too big to star as a Bond villain back then. But today, he's starring in just about anything, including that terrible "Wolfman" movie. He would be a great villain, but a pretty old one.

Yes, Hopkins was being sought to play Trevalyn in the original draft of GE when Dalton was still attached.

It was on stage. Hopkins had just spent some time playing Lambert Le Roux (Broadway and London) in David Hare’s Pravda. He didn’t want to play another evil, megalomaniac press baron - quite understandably.

Probably too old for the main Bond villain role now. Especially since they seem to be about twelve these days.

Maybe he could play M's husband, or something?

Sir Anthony Hopkins had no idea about playing James Bond nemesis...
Here's a link to hear his proper answer :
http://www.premiere....s/(gid)/2655694
As you can see, Hopkins doesn't even know who's playing James Bond now...
Have a good day.

Hopkins is a great actor but i'm glad he's not doing it. Would have too predictable and not that workable either if he still thinks Brosnan is playing the part.

Given how extremely and embarrassingly over the top Hopkins has been as of late, I'm actually glad to see him not involved. I would have fully expected to see yet another scenery chewing, buggy eyed, cartoon performance from him, seeing as that's about all we've gotten from him as of late.

Seconded. The idea of putting Hopkins in a Bond film is both unimaginative and unwise.

Ralph Fiennes would be more interesting, not that I see that panning out. I could see him as a main villain. He could even make a fine Blofeld.
