Until just today I had only been a fan of the films. But my wife was at the bookstore and bought me the first four Fleming novels. I'm already almost halfway through Casino Royale and I can't wait to dig into the rest.

I'm kicking myself for not reading them sooner, but I must admit I'm delighted at the prospect of so much new (to me) Bond material to work through since I've seen all the films a ridiculous number of times.

I'm also pleased that the "film Bonds" haven't crept into my reading. Already in the book I've created my own unique image of Bond, Mathis, Vesper, Leiter, and Le Chiffre that are quite different from their movie counterparts.

Brilliant stuff, staveoffzombies.
My whole view of Bond deepened when I read the novels.
For anyone who is unfamiliar with Fleming, just try one of the novels or a short story to start with.

Fleming short stories: None, yet
Continuation novels: Not until I've read all of Fleming, so none

Read Fleming's travel books as well, a while back. Those were certainly interesting.

I've read all the Fleming novels and all the short-stories. I have CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG but have yet to read it.

On principle I will not read any Bond novels not written by Fleming. If it isn't Fleming, it isn't Bond.

I've heard it'd be better to keep it that way, too.

I have read everything. Repeatedly. Even the novels I like the least I have read more than once. Naturally I have reread Fleming the most, followed by Gardner, but I see no need to read Higson again - ever. If Higson does move on into the war years someday I'll read those stories too, probably with more enthusiasm.

I look forward to every new entry and try to enjoy it unconditionally, but there have been lean periods (1991-1997 & 2000-present) when there was little to interest me. Still, I don't rate or rank the authors or their novels, I just enjoy them - or not.

What you have heard is wrong. The YB and Moneypenny novels are mostly excellent and superior to some of the weaker Flemings(Golden Gun,Goldfinger,Diamonds).

Number of Ian Fleming James Bond novels I have read: All
Number of Ian Fleming James Bond short stories I have read: All
Number of non-Bond Ian Fleming books I have read (The Diamond Smugglers, Thrilling Cities, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang): I'll get around to it one day.

The official Glidrose/IFP Continuation Novels I have read*:

Colonel Sun by Robert Markham/Kingsly Amis: Yep
James Bond: The Authorised Biography by John Pearson: Nope

Number of original John Gardner James Bond novels: All

Number of original Raymond Benson James Bond novels: All but the trilogy.
Number ot Raymond Benson James Bond short stories (Blast From The Past, Midsummer Night's Doom, Live At Five): Just Blast From the Past, but I'd give my ring finger for Heart of the Erzulie.
Devil May Care by Sebastian Faulks? Unfortunately

Number of Charlie Higson Young Bond novels: Only Silverfin
Number of Kate Westbrook/Samantha Weinberg Moneypenny Diaries novels: Read the first and halfway through the second.
Number of Kate Westbrook/Samantha Weinberg Moneypenny short stories: Wish I could find em.

The official tie-in novelizations I have read:

by Christopher Wood: Both
by John Gardner: Both, and might I say that the GE novelization might be superior to the movie.
by Raymond Benson: None

I've read Trouble Spot and The Golden Ghost comic collections and have the rest, but haven't read em yet.

I've read Permission to Die and Shattered Helix and the FYEO comic novelization.

I've also read 0031/2,The Adventures of James Bond Junior.

All the Books I haven't read yet, I own except for Pearson's and Higson's short story.

- I've read all the Fleming novels and short stories.
Several times. I'm actually currently in the process of re-reading them, in chronologial order, and I'm now reading YOLT.

- I've read 1 non-Bond Fleming work: The Diamond Smugglers

That's all! Just after finishing YOLT, though, I intend to read Colonel Sun.

As for the rest, I don't really know why, but I'm not that tempted. I may be wrong, and I may miss many good things, but I don't feel like it.
Perhaps some here could suggest what is an interesting read among all those "continuation novels"? I'm willing to get convinced... ;)

Might be interesting to ask that as well as reading each once, how many have had a second or third attempt at any of them, and, of course, which ones were they they were drawn back to. Or not. ;)

Plus "The James Bond Dossier" by Kingsley Amis, "The Life Of Ian Fleming" by John Pearson, and "Ian Fleming" by Andrew Lycett and "Double O Seven:A Report" by Richard Snelling.

Well, that's my misspent youth accounted for! :)

(Incidentally, I once read all of Ian Fleming's Bond novels, one a day, in the gaps in between one A Level exam paper and the other - my exams were spread over two weeks. I had got to the point where further exam revision was pointless and needed something in between to keep me sane! I'd arrive at for each exam and my school friends would ask "How's it going?", and I'd answer something like "Just finished From Russia With Love" or "That's Goldfinger out of the way!". Needless to say this diversion from the straight and narrow did not affect my exam grades - I got the predicted straight As!)

Wow, good one Guy Haines. I just wish I'd been that smart. I read them whilst revising too and they certainly affected my marks, losing 94% in my maths exam: I got 007%

I updated the poll:
Have you read Carte Blanche? Y/N
Have you read the Young Bond short story, A Hard Man To Kill? Y/N
