I was watching the TV-show "The Mentalist", were the Australian actor Simon Baker is in the lead. This guy has the style, the looks and the charm to portray James Bond. Do not get me wrong, I would like to see Daniel Craig feature in at least 5 more Bond films. But maybe Baker could take over the role after Craig.

To be honest - he wouldn't be too bad.
Reminds me of Pierce Brosnan - even has the same looks.

There is, occasionally, something smooth and very Bondish about him. But I have to see more before I can make up my mind.

I find The Mentalist to be a surprisingly fun show to watch. I remember the sort of confused feeling I had when Craig was cast as Bond. I kept thinking, "the dude from Tomb Raider?" Now, I look back & think he was the perfect choice for Bond. So, for that reason, I wouldn't dismiss Baker as a candidate either.

I like him in The Mentalist, but he's too baby-faced. Not rugged enough to look like Bond.

I’d have to see him in something else. He seems slightly effeminate as Jane in the Mentalist. (The name doesn’t help, but it’s not just that.) I’ll give you that he’s got the smooth, but does he have the rough?

I kept thinking, "the dude from Tomb Raider?" Now, I look back & think he was the perfect choice for Bond.

In this instance the "dude from XXX - State of the Union."......

I'm always up for some "who's next" speculation, but I'll eat my proverbial hat if Simon Baker is in anything near-consideration. While The Mentalist is doing quite well, every other series that has been hung on him to lead has crashed and burned, and he's yet to have the kind of breakout role in films that would put him in the conversation. Unless you count the aforementioned XXX, of course.......

That said, there's plenty of time, but IMHO, I don't see it.

Simon Baker could play James Bond.

But then, so could Michael Weatherly of NCIS and DARK ANGEL fame, or Nathan Fillion from FIREFLY and DR. HORRIBLE's SING-ALONG BLOG, or any one of dozens of actors.

No offence to your namesake, Cap’n Tighty, but I don’t think Fillion can do a proper Brit accent and he’s a bit too ‘All-American :( Boy’ in the looks department.

My point was not to provide suggestions as to who could play James Bond, but rather point out that anyone could be James Bond. Not just Baker.

I don't know the Mentalist, but I do like Baker. Nice bloke, smooth in a Brosnan way like Cmdr Shaun says.
I saw him as a motorbike-riding tough in a heist series with Ray Liotta, though I don't remember its title.
He certainly has the guts to star as a credible Bond, the only problem is where he'll be when Craig stops. All speculation we have about a new Bond now will have to wait for the situation several years from now. By then, there might be lots of other contenders.

Actually it's quit funny since i saw a trailer for the Mentalist the other day and the thought popped up in my mind. I haven't seen the show and nothing else with him so i can't judge his acting but just the look of him made me think of Bond.

I've suggested elsewhere that he could and my position hasn't changed. For anyone who has reservations, he showed his dark side wonderfully in the short-lived TV show 'Smith'. I'm not sure if any of his film work confirms this side of him. But it's interesting to note that he, with Russell Crowe and Guy Pearce, got his big break in L. A. Confidential. He's about 40 now, so much would depend on how long Craig hangs on. Baker's remarkably boyish looking. My opinion: he'd be ideal for the role provided that he begin with the next five years.

So you want the next Bond actor to take over the role at 50!

But he looks too old now. As a leading man he looks fey and dated. He is the cinematic equivalent of the struggling screen hero in Peter Jackson's KING KONG. And, ironically, didn't Baker play the part of the wannabee matinee idol in LA CONFIDENTIAL - the one who got had an interesting "last supper" left down his throat?

There may also a reason Baker's show was probably axed - i.e. people haven't latched onto him.

And I don't know if anyone's noticed, but James Bond is no longer going to require an actor that is a Moore / Brosnan identikit performer. Looking sauve and "a bit British" was not the direction then and it isn't now.

The next Bond will be someone I bumped into the other day...and now I can see why.

It's more like Baker could play James Bond. He has what it takes. That's my point. :(

Spot on. Eon have a history of never forgetting actors that they once screentested, and Babs etc will be monitoring Cavill's career closely. Physically he looks fantastic, and this year his acting chops will be tested in Woody Allen's latest offering. By 2010 we will have seen him as a lead in a big budget 300-style movie (name escapes me at the moment), so it'll be interesting to see how he fares in it. IMHO Cavill remains the hottest tip to become Bond #7.

Btw, anyone think that Natalie Dormer, Cavill's co-star in The Tudors, might make a semi-decent Moneypenny?

I saw him in something last night. I went a bit gay and watched THE DEVIL WEARS PRADA....(!). He is one of the most weirdest looking chaps ever to be deemed handsome. He's actually a bit unwatchable too - which are already not the things I personally want from a Bond actor.

It is not enough to be smooth and wear a tailored suit. If that was the criteria Terry Wogan would have been Bond since 1976.

I completely agree!...mentioned this fact to a group of friends only last week so I am not surprised that this idea is out there.
He has the looks and the charisma to be a bond plus he is credible in fight scenes (watch a cancelled series called "Theif" starring Ray Liotta)
Dont get me wrong Daniel Craig is cool but I think this guy could blow him out of the water (baker).

I was brought to his attention in "Land of the Dead." He played a pretty tough character in that movie (you have to be tough to survive in a world overrun with zombies lol), and I also posted a thread about him as well.

The only thing going against him (imo) is that he is around the same age as Craig. Were he younger I'd love for him to succeed Craig, but as it is I bet they go for someone younger when Craig decides he's done.

Thank you. I'm here all week!

I'm afraid I don't agree with you on Baker though. He looks like someone has opened The Ark Of The Covenant in his presence and his face has been melted by an early 1980's ILM team. Harsh maybe, but the camera doesn't like him. Casting BOND is not about finding a type, it's about finding the man. And he wouldn't blow Craig out of the water. I think Daniel would no doubt leave the pool as quickly as if Bill Murray himself had left a Hershey floater...
