Loomis said from the heart, not the head.ACE, you have taste, my friend.
Although may I ask what's wrong with DRIVEN, JUDGE DREDD and PARADISE ALLEY?
Why not Rinestone?
If I'd intellectualized it, of course I'd have chosen
Lock Up
FIST
Staying Alive

2. North By Northwest - sheer exictement beginning to end. What a terrific balance of strong characters and story, laced with action sequences notable for their nerve-wracking suspense and originality.
Honourable mention: From Russia, With Love - not just because I'm a Bond fan. It's an excellent film in its own right, and had this been the only Bond movie made it would sit right next to North by Northwest in cinematic history.
I fail to understand the logic. So, because it isn't the only Bond film ever made, it doesn't stand beside NBTW? But if it was the only Bond film made, it would?
Either FRWL is perfect enough or it's not. What does the existence of the other Bond movies have to do with it's perfection or lack of perfection in relation to NBNW?
I note you are from Toronto, Single-0. A 35 mm print of From Russia With Love is playing tomorrow evening (Tue Jan 27, 09) at 7pm at the old Bloor Cinema near Bloor and Bathurst, FYI.
I've seen the FRWL dvd a few times recently and am going to make the trip to finally see it on the Big Screen. I feel the movie is not as flawless as I had originally imagined - with rose coloured glasses, pre-Q0S - and feel it is far from 'perfect'. I'll have a better feeling for the movie by tomorrow night.

1) The Empire Strikes Back
2) 2001
3) Master and Commander
As a naval officer and historian, I find Master and Commander an absolute masterpiece.

3) Master and Commander
Kool movie with great acting. I remember watching it when it came out. I was struck by the lack any music at the begining...just the sounds of wind and waves and creaking and the flapping of sails. And then the attack!

Hey HR,
if my logic is flawed or poorly explained then I apologise. I'm simply indicating that, since it's lumped into the "Bond film" category of cinema history, it's generally only compared to the others in the series. Were it a standalone film unrelated to a franchise, it would obviously be charted differently.
Thanks for the reminder about the screening tomorrow night. I may try to attend that. If I do, perhaps I'll see you there. We can go for a pint after and fight over this subject, while enjoying the sight of all the attractive university girls that hang around the area.

Raiders of the Lost Ark. THE perfect movie.
North by Northwest
Die Hard.
How gauche of me, I know. I have a real soft spot for the Untouchables too.
It gladdens my heart to have not seen Star Wars on this list yet. Empire were fibbing to us all this time!

Yet, from whence was this excitement conceived? From THE LAST CRUSADE? Did that basic rehash of a film overwhelm you so much as a (a what… a late teenager!?) that it primed your passion so for KOTCS?
I’m not sure if my question is best placed in this thread, or in the Indy thread, or if I should start a “Diary of a Loomatic” thread.

Mad Max 2 is in my list of "honerable mention(s)". Still, I don't get why a huge Bond geek doesn't like the Bond template that is Raiders(only better than any Bond film-heresy!

No heresy that I can see: Raiders is far better than any Bond film! And quite easy to compare too; they're the same genre.

I agree especially with a perfect score from John Williams, and that truck chase scene is simply awesome. Here is my list:
Raiders of the Lost Ark
Great action and great style through a very Michael Crutiz direction.
Vertigo
Hypnotic, and my favorite Hitchcock film and every time I watch it I pick up something different and get hooked to Benard Hermann's haunting score.
Ben-Hur
This is my favorite epic film that is pretty wide when it comes to the aspect ratio and great to look at.
