I'd also be interested in recommendations of Charteris' works. There seem to be two sets of collections currently around called 'The Best Of The Saint Volume...'. Any good?
I'd obviously highly recommend them because I put them together for Hodders but it depends what you're after.
If novels are your thing then go for titles like 'The Last Hero' (aka 'The
Saint Closes the Case'), Getaway (aka 'The
Saint's Getaway'), 'Prelude for War' (aka 'The
Saint Plays With Fire'), 'The
Saint in New York' or even some of the latterday stuff like 'The
Saint and the Templar Treasure'.
If you'd prefer short stories go for 'The Brighter Buccaneer', 'Boodle' (aka 'The
Saint Intervenes') or 'The
Saint in the Sun'.
Hodders wouldn't let me include any novels in the compilations so we went with 'classic'
Saint short stories and stories that suited Roger's
Saint.

Slightly OT to recent discussions, but I ordered an omnibus-ish thing containing five Saint stories last night, and I'm a bit curious as to what fellow Saint fans think are the best of the lot. Stories contained are The Man Who Was Clever, The Lawless Lady, The Saint Closes the Case, The Avenging Saint, and The Saint vs Scotland Yard.
Ah, that must be the misnamed volume 'The
Saint: Five Complete Novels'
Personally I'd probably favor Closes the Case and Scotland Yard a tad above the others, but it's quite close. They're all good early
Saint adventures.
