Realistically, a take of about $70 million (which is what Rocky Balboa did) seems the kind of figure they are aiming for.
All along I've thought it unlikely that THE EXPENDABLES would or could take much more than that.
However, the hype is really snowballing for this one, and not just on sites like AICN (SNAKES ON A PLANE, anyone?) but also in the mainstream media. With a few more months to build the thing up and some smart marketing (a la THE DARK KNIGHT, although I guess they don't quite have the marketing budget that Warners did) and a summer release (albeit late summer), I now reckon a take of $100 million is possible. It won't do $200 million plus. It won't be a supersmash for the record books. But I suspect it'll do rather better than I'd previously thought.
Of course, much will depend on the quality of the film (if it's as good as people seem to be telling themselves it's going to be, it'll lead to great word of mouth and repeat viewings) and the rating (a hard R will limit box office, but I suspect that the cut that ends up in cinemas will be PG-13).
Mind you, nothing is set in stone. The summer release may make no difference. It may even make a RAMBOesque haul of only $40 million or so. But I do think it has a decent shot at $100 million, albeit not much more. It's had an extraordinary amount of pre-release publicity and goodwill, far more than ROCKY BALBOA or RAMBO did. Time will tell, though.
