I always think it's surprising that they didn't get Frank Sinatra to sing one, especially since he was one of Sir Roger's friends (although so is almost every royal family in Europe other than the British, half the old acting profession, and every single other UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador).

Or Dean Martin. Either could have done FRWL fantastically, not that Matt Monroe did too shabbily.

Actually, I'd rather like it if they went back to a more traditional theme in future (ie, nice and slow, nice, catchy tune).

The Beatles would have been good, too.

We sort of had the Beatles with McCartney, no?

Frank Sinatra was on the verge of recording MOONRAKER, I believe - then for some reason didn't before Johnny Mathis and Kate Bush were nearly involved then weren't, which meant John Barry had to go on bended knee to Ms Bassey at the eleventh hour. She didn't want to do it (and, until recently, refused to perform it live in concert), but luckily she did...

As for Miley Cyrus, you can be sure that her sound will change as her career shifts towards a more adult demographic. Apparently, David Gilmour of Pink Floyd was at some kind of music industry function with her recently and told reporters that he'd heard her playing guitar. "She reminds me of a young me," Gilmour told the press (sorry, I don't have a link to hand for this info, but I'm paraphrasing what I read), "with echoes of Clapton and Hendrix and perhaps just a touch of Slash." Personally, I think her playing is more like that of Rod Price from Foghat, or maybe Robin Trower, but, still.... It's also well known that Cyrus is an accomplished reggae toaster and dub-influenced bassist. Axl Rose briefly got her into one of the many lineups of Guns N' Roses before she hit the big time as Hanna Montana, and her guitar work can be heard on "Chinese Democracy" between 1.56 and 1.58 on "Shackler's Revenge".

Ten years from now, as an adult, mabye. Miley might even be a Bond girl as well, most likely with Daniel Craig's successor. Let's see what happens once she outgrows the Hannah Montana era.

when she gets her weird teeth done she might be a bond girl :-p

After hearing the new album I think Kasabian would be a much better choice than Oasis

I know Noel has thrown his hat into the ring and I agree another UK artist/group should get a shot, so forget Duffy and the like.

These guys would make a Bond Theme for us to be proud, there is a touch of Barry in their new superb album very subtle but it's there.

Listening to "Give In To Me," Michael Jackson could've made a killer Bond theme.

B)

Their song, "A Rock and a Hard Place," is in my iTunes playlist of great Bond themes that never were.

I just saw their first album on the used rack at FYE for 2.99 yesterday. Bargain for sure.

Whatever they end up doing in the future, I only wish that they'd consider some of the artists who've done a Bond theme that wasn't really a Bond theme.

Kerli, Mya and Esthero all did Bond songs that were as good as or better than some of the official ones. Why not have them back to do a movie? Especially Kerli, I think "When Nobody Loves You" should have been the title song for QoS. It just fits so well.

Sharleen Spiteri would be good to sing a Bond song. Her new album has a cool 60s vibe. The song "It Was You" would make a nice Bond song.

Seems to like them.

Jackson would have been an inspired choice. Unfortanetely now we'll never if he would have been up to the challenge or not.

Another group who could have done a cracking theme would have been Pink Floyd, but I think the window for them possibly doing a theme has closed.

Bring back Paul Mccartney! Or these artists could prob deliver some great songs the Who, Queen, Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton(sucks that didnt work out then but the 80s were his herion phase and he didnt have his best stuff then anyway),red hot chilli peppers (might be a lil too crazy for bond)and a robert plant and jimmy page song would be the greatest in my opinion!
Maybe the Black Keys or Franz Ferdinand(maybe a lil crazy for bond as well), they have some pretty good stuff. I think Jack White had the talent but delivered a below par entry into the Bond Song cannon. I would love to give him another shot but I know I would be hung for suggesting it. I thought Chris cornells was pretty good. Let me know what u guys think

Well, the Cooper one was never an opportunity, unless you are referring to it as one from Cooper's point of view. He was deluded in thinking that if he wrote a song using the title of the then next Bond film it would get used.

I've been indulging in a bit of nostalgia tonight and have come to the conclusion that Saint Etienne could have done a funky little Bond song. Still could, in fact.

What a great topic to take away the boredom at work! I was thinking of artists that would perhaps best reflect the period and to some extent the tone of the film.

Dr No – Lalo Schifrin
FRWL – Frank Sinatra
Goldfinger – Dusty Springfield
Thunderball – Aretha Franklin
YOLT – The Kinks
OHMSS – Jimi Hendrix Experience
DAF – The Rolling Stones
LALD – James Brown
TMWTGG – David Bowie
TSWLM – Abba
Moonraker – Led Zeppelin
FYEO – Blondie
Octopussy – Queen
AVTAK – Sade
TLD – INXS
LTK – Robert Palmer
Goldeneye – Bjork
TND – Manic Street Preachers
TWINE – Skunk Anansie
DAD – Jamiroquai
CR – Goldfrapp
QOS – The Killers

As soon as I post this I bet I'll start changing my mind!

I'll add my two pennysworth.

1960s - I would have liked to have seen Frank Sinatra perform a Bond theme, not sure which though. Matt Monro did a fine job on FRWL. Also, Dusty Springfield and Aretha Franklin. The former did perform in a Bond film, in a way - CR1967's "The Look Of Love" - whilst Franklin was, reputedly, on john Barry's wish list for the YOLT theme.

1970s - If Barry had written a theme for DAF based on gambling and diamonds, rather than just diamonds alone, then a performer with a Las Vegas association such as Sinatra might have worked, I suppose. Also, I've heard Alice Cooper's song. Not bad, but..........

1980s - I wasn't a great fan of the 80s era musically, but the recent Plusnet internet commercials over here have reminded me of one hit record from then that I liked, "Temptation" by Heaven 17. I think they might have done as good if not a better job as either Duran Duran or a-ha with a Bond theme ("Temptation" featuring what the AVTAK and TLD theme tunes missed, namely a male band plus a good female vocalist.). Other names - Sade, or Annie Lennox.

1990s - David Arnold's Shaken And Stirred provides a hint of what could have been with some of the artists he used for that album. U2 has also been mentioned as a possible from then.

2000s - I would have liked to have heard Alicia Keys perform a Bond theme on her own.

That's all that occurs to me for now.

28th January postscript - re my Heaven 17 suggestion above - check out the youtube video of them on the Jools Holland show performing "Temptation". True, they are looking, ahem, more my age than your typical teen going on twenty (49 today, by the way!), but as with Dame Shirley and Sir Tom, they can still belt it out. And the lead female vocalist, Billie Godfrey is, I think, superb, in more ways than one! If she couldn't carry a Bond theme....... put it this way, I doubt she would have fainted at the end of "Thunderball". :)

David Bowie. He'd still be great now - in fact, I just want to see him doing something at this point - but he'd be fantastic in his Seventies heyday, especially if he had free reign to come up with a song for something like TSWLM.

Mike Patton has a wonderful voice, and he'd be able to do a great title sequence song... but for a James Bond post-Daniel Craig (or post-Bond 23 if it's the end of the trilogy started with Casino Royale and Quantum of Solace or if it's the last Daniel's Bond movie) because for Bond23, I would prefer a superb instrumental in the title sequence, which will reminds From Russia with love or On her majesty's secret service.

;)

A superb instrumental, absolutely. We haven't had one of those over the titles in decades. Indeed, it might have worked for QoS, given the difficulties in including the film title into any potential theme song.

Scarlett Johansson sings a Bond song!

Taken from the new Jungle Book movie called 'Trust in Me'.

A fan edited the SPECTRE credits to fit the song....

"You know, that's not half bad."

It doesn't really fit the credit sequence, and the song could be a little more...bombastic. But that is exactly the kind of slinky retro-groove that the next theme composer should strive for.
