Could be. Technically, the character Giancarlo Giannini played was not Mathis. Interesting.Mmm interesting. Do you think this was an attempt by the producers to create a loophole so they weren't technically killing a Fleming original?

Agreed. I hope they let it be. Giancarlo Giannini's Mathis facade portrayal will do for now.I hope this isn't going to lead to a future scene of the "real" Mathis appearing then. I fear that would not be good.

Bond turns round and says that Mathis wasn't a very good codename purely because it was his real name.

This was how I took it - that when checking into hotels, etc., Mathis uses his own name as his working name. It's something Bond also does, of course, and it's just begging for attention. We know the organisation are aware of Mathis thanks to LeChiffre's comment about him.
It tells us, just quickly, how Mathis was able to be located and captured so quickly after their arrival.

Anyway, even though I'd prefer not to have know this, I think it might have been a tongue-in-cheek stab at the moronic idea that "James Bond" is a code-name in the same way as 007 is. They might have been aiming to dispel the notion (I am soglad this was never used in DIE ANOTHER DAY) either by showing that it doesn't really work or attributing it to another character so that Bond can't be a code-name. If there's one thing you shouldn't do in writing (and let's face it, there's a lot of things you shouldn't do), it's use the same plot twist twice.

Makes sense, given that his code-name was Renee.MATHIS's real name is Judith.

Also we actually see Bond cry for the first time here when he holds the dead Mathis.
Ey?? Bond didn't cry. He just looked deeply devestated but he wasn't reduced to tears.
I LOVED the Bond/Mathis story arc and it's (surprisingly) heartbreaking conclusion. All of their scenes together are a joy to watch, the poignant bar scene on-board the flight to Bolivia being a particular favourite.
Agreed and of course his

Important to note this, actually: it does look like a tear below Bond's right eye (I thought the same thing initially) but in fact it's just a bead of sweat. On second glance his face was clearly covered in 'em.

Like he did with Vesper?
I don't think he cried with Vesper. He looked very lost and devastated by mixed feelings, but I don't think we saw him crying in CR.

I agree. The closest we saw Bond to crying in CASINO ROYALE was when he was getting his crown jewels flayed by Le Chiffre. A perfectly understandable reaction!I don't think he cried with Vesper. That's what I understood (and that's why we have no "Bond, James Bond" in this film).
Look, they did think it through, y'know.

He looked like he was to me. And when the cameras pull back as he slumps down over Vesper and then cradles her body to him, I think it's pretty clearly implied that crying is involved. That's just how I see it, though.I agree. The closest we saw Bond to crying in CASINO ROYALE was when he was getting his crown jewels flayed by Le Chiffre. That was my impression too. Have to watch again to be sure,though...
