Older Lazenby for Gardner's Bond...I only now realise how that suits the image I had of him.

Faulkes and Boyd: a Moore Dalton hybrid

What exactly is a Moore Dalton hybrid. Is that anything like a Sean Connery Woody Allen hybrid?

I shudder to think what that's like.

That's Dalton with the typical Moore pimple and one eyebrow raised all the time.

I think of Moore with Gardner. He seems much much more genteel than Fleming's Bond.

As he was playing 007 at the time I read them all, I pictured Dalton, or at least a composite based on him.  I've actually never been able to land successfully on a single actor in my mind while reading any Bond, regardless of the author, but tend to create a loose avatar in my mind of whoever is the current screen personification.

Having just read For Special Services (my first Gardner Bond), I realized that I picture him as basically being an older (and, honestly, somewhat blander) version of Fleming's Bond. I suppose I might revise my opinion after reading more of Gardner's Bond.

Fleming's Bond himself I've always viewed as a distinct character in his own right...but I feel that of the actors, Dalton came closest to matching him.

I've always pictured either Dalton or Brosnan for Gardner's Bond; a little bit older and world weary, but very experienced and capable

I am in my sixties, so I "usually" see Sean Connery.  I have read all the books, but I have read a few books trying to picture my favorite actor - Cary Grant.

Since LICENCE RENEWED was published right in the middle of the Moore era - and in my country with a b/w Moore photograph on the cover, complete with strands of what you could imagine as grey hair at the temples - I used to think of Gardner's Bond as a 'serious' version of Moore. Perhaps at times mixed with the generic 'tall-dark-handsome' faceless image of the odd illustration.
