Hey There.
Whenever I read Gardener's Bond Novels, I always see either Roger Moore or Tim Dalton, Is this deliberate. Seafire especially I see Moore.
SEAFIRE POSTER I MADE:

And Scorpius I see Dalton.
However these are the only two Gardener Books I have read, I still see these Actors verry clearly, their style and their way of doing things, Is this deliberate?

Hm... it's strange, but I always see Pierce in my head when reading a Gardner. I just read The Man From Barbarossa a few weeks back and I was definitely seeing an older Brosnan with a hint of gray at the temples in every scene.

I'm one of the weird ones who sees Rog when reading a Fleming though, so perhaps you should pay no attention to me.

I always saw the 1970's Moore, for some strange reason.

Now, when I read them, I see . . . . dead people!

No, really, I don't see anyone specific.

Often Pierce, occassionally Jeremy Northam. I'm odd like that.

As they went on, the more I just imagined the dull, middle aged Bond in the Gardner books to look like the picture of Gardner on the back cover.

Miles Snodgrass. He was a smallish man who had a large nose to Bond suspected to have homosexual tendencies. He gave Bond a good deal on his services because he always had this fantasy to mow Bond's lawn.

Actually, I picture a shadowy Bond figure too, but not the same as when I'm reading Fleming. Weird.
Though, I pictured the Fleming-Bond shadowy figure when reading Colonel Sun.

From 1981-86: Roger Moore. It seems weird that some of Gardner's novels seem tailor made for Moore.

From 87-95: Dalton hands down.

Gardner keeps reminding me of Bond's toughness, in his descriptive passages; but then when Bond is talking to someone, he'll be really happy go lucky and laughing with them.

So most of the time, I picture a weird hybrid of the 'shadowy-mystery-man' and Roger Moore.

However, when he said "I saw a Jane Fonda movie once..." when talking about nuclear meltdowns to Anton Murik, I could practically see Sir Roger's mole.

A generic thriller hero who had been named 'James Bond' for contractual purposes?

This guy looks nearly dead on to how I imagined Gardner’s Bond:

I don’t know why. Every other author’s Bond to me was closer to CBn’s Bond, but Gardner’s was always more like the Agent Under Fire Bond.

Yeah, that's a fairly accurate description of how I'd picture him as well, except maybe with different hair.

Gardner's Bond always reminded me of the haunted photojournalist Don McCullin - the poet of Polaroid.

I've just begun reading Licence Renewed and interestingly enough it's Sean Connery. It's not that I'm conciously thinking of Connery, it's just that he immediately springs to mind as I'm reading.

I've read only movie novelisations of LTK and GE. I have to say it's Dalton for me. Both books cover Bond's dark moods and it always rings Dalton. Brosnan did a very good job with GE. Thanks mainly to Campbell who keeps Bond tight. When I started reading Spy Who Loved me (Ian Fleming version) noticed it was Connery all the way.
I got the feeling that Bond is a moody character. I stopped reading the novel because it felt a bit dated.

But he sure as hell wasn't Ian Fleming's...

The Bond I picture when reading Bond is the much like the chap on the US Hardback cover of Devil May Care.

Maybe Gardners Bond was also a shadow?

I see the same guy I see when reading Fleming's Bond. He's a little older, wiser, a little less severe with people he cares for. I also always saw Gardner's Bond as more in shape and capable because Gardner always made a point of his more stickt workout routine, his care for his health and his constantly going back to train with active teams to stay sharp.

I always see it as if Fleming's Bond was analogous to Bruce Wayne/Batman then Gardner's would be similar to Frank Miller's Batman from Dark Knight Returns. Still the same guy, but a about 40 more years experience, he's got his spying and combat skills down even more tight than he used to and he's more at ease with his role.
