Saw a screening of WANTED last night. It was pretty damn good! Of all the summer movies I've seen so far, I think it's actually my favorite. Audience loved it. Not only did they applaud at the end, but they started rhythmically clapping to the end credit music. Never experienced anything like that, but the movie just had the audience in a groove that didn't let up.

I was also struck by how many young women came to the screening (alone, in groups, and with dates). For an mega action movie, you expect the men to outnumber the women. Not so last night.

I think it could be a big hit.

It was good but they certainly changed alot when adapting it it from comic book mini-series to movie. I thought the only change was making the supervillains into assassins.

There was this weird credit in the end titles. They had to ask 20th Century Fox's permission in order to name a character Fox. I haven't seen a character that ridiculous since Harlan Ellison's added credit to The Terminator.

I liked it up till the ending. A good film can be sunk by a lame ending and unfortanately this was it.

*snap*

As I was opening this thread I received a Feedreader popup linking to a review of this movie at Cinematical.

Sounds really interesting.

That's one of the changes from the mini-series.

I'm looking forward to seeing the film at some point, especially given the talented cast that this one has. It's good to hear that it's a good film, though. Might make a double-feature out of this one and GET SMART sometime soon.

I agree - saw it with the boys and me liked it a lot. Had never heard of the comic book,

Good, unpretentious fun - no evident "themes" and I was in the mood for something incredibly shallow. Yum.

I saw this at a screening on Wednesday. I thought the movie was fun --sort of a cross between THE MATRIX and FIGHT CLUB. Ultimately the movie plays it too safe for my tastes though.

FYI: One of the reasons that the movie differs so much from the comics is that the screenwriters started writing the movie when only the first issue of the comic had been released. They were forced by necessity to extrapolate where the story would go while purposely NOT going to the insane lengths the comic went too.

I saw the trailer and thought it looked like run-of-the-mill mindless CGI-stuffed action junk, but since y'all are being so sweet about it I might just give it a go on DVD.

The Dodgeometer's smokin' on the strength of the trailer alone. The action looks fantabulous...Jolie's tats look every bit as sizzling as her t_ _ s...and I'm really in love with McAvoy's brogueish response to the question of what it's all about: "Awwww doooon't rrrrrrreally nooooooo." Two thumbs up!

Ehh, seeing the preview turned me off. I prefer my action heros to do things that are difficult and extraordinary but still possible (falling out of an airplane and grabbing someone's chute)instead of simply impossible (swimming under ice, a la DAD). Shooting wings off of flies and getting bullets to curve after they leave the barrel both fall into the latter category.

My thoughts exactly. These days I guess I just assume anything with Angelina Jolie will be mediocre at best.

That's just stupid. Wait for Millar to finish writing the whole thing, then go from there. Why the rush when so much time has passed between the end of the mini series and the release of the film?

I thought it was very entertaining. It was a little slow in the beginning but it delivered in the end imo. Good film.

When the mood hits to to watch some unashamed godawful rubbish, you'll see it. It is absent themes. It is absent logic. It is absent introspection. It is absent significant character arcs or whatever else is required of comic book heroes these days. As a result it glories in what it is - bloody awful and it knows it. Fab.

That's quite ironic considering that, in the mini series, it was the supervillains who were the leads. They beat the heroes.

Looks like its opening weekend set a record for an R-rated June movie.

set a record for an R-rated June movie.

Wow, the second half of that sentence makes the first half as meaningless as a player's batting average over a five game span.

It's a stretch as far as movie records go (as well as how much one actually cares about such things), but nonetheless: http://www.superhero...ews.php?id=7413

Am I the only one who noticed...?

I missed it the first time around, because the frantic camerawork covered it up--we never get to see La Jolie for more than a second or so at a time...and never below the elbows, when she's wearing the sleeveless white dress. There'd been tabloid stories, a while back, about her alarming wait loss.

At the time of the film, at least, that may well be true. She looks more than wraith-like and frail--she looks positively anorexic. And if I'm right, they must've used a nude stunt double for the steamroom booty shot.

McAvoy, in contrast, is shown stripped to the waist for 2-3 seconds a couple of times.

What are your takes on this?

Totally agree - this is what I also liked about it. I found that I and the group I was with seemed to be the only ones laughing at the silliness though.

Yeah, lots of unashamed laughing when I saw it this evening too. Generally, just good fun. It also served the dual purpose of convincing me that James McAvoy could never be Bond!

Hmm, I'm not sure about this.

The ending of the movie was pretty decent with loose ends tied up I thought. Plus, with certain key characters dead, I didn't feel that a sequel was necessary.

Have not seen the movie yet and am looking forward to it, but in the meantime I've been listening to the score by Danny Elfmen. Quite good actually, the best he's done in a while.
