So according to that link Qwery posted and links to two articles on IMDB (I know, not the best of sources, and somehow I doubt THR is exactly the most reputable website/paper/what have you out there) the film has been retitled "The Ghost Writer". Personally I find the addition of the word Writer to the title not only pointless, but damaging. The Ghost Writer is a dull, pedestrian title that evokes images of, well, a faceless man making a politician look good. The Ghost not only evokes images of something invisible, something not there, i.e. a literal ghost, but for those familiar with the story it could also be applied to things beyond our unnamed narrator. The Ghost has a sense of intrigue and, dare I say it, fun. The Ghost Writer sounds like a 1950s television serial. I'm sure the film will still be very good, but I just don't like the addition of the word Writer to the title.

But you haven't seen the film. It's no secret what the story is about and THE GHOST WRITER makes a great deal more sense as a title.

If the film is as good as people are murmuring it is... then (quite rightly) the film will do very well.... which will no doubt upset a few people who live in Black And White Land.

The sad thing too is that Samantha Geimer would no doubt jump at the chance to accept an invite to the US premiere...but that is just MY (cynical) view and not those of CBN (other views are available).

I still think 'The Ghost' was a more intriguing, more mysterious title; I'd choose that one over 'The Ghost Writer' any day, although the latter is of course more fitting. Especially if the final product is as good as the source material would indicate I'd think the film could easily live with a title that's perhaps a little bit misleading, in a small way. And to me 'The Ghost Writer' doesn't exactly raise many interesting connotations, despite the volatile issues and themes it's plot is constructed of.

THE GHOST WRITER makes a great deal more sense as a title.

I disagree. It's far too On the Nose™.

It's like changing LICENCE REVOKED to LICENCE TO KILL on the (rumoured) grounds that Americans would either fail to understand the meaning of the word "revoked" or would assume that the film concerned the withdrawal of a licence to drive. There's also the urban legend that THE MADNESS OF GEORGE III became THE MADNESS OF KING GEORGE lest viewers in the United States imagine that the thing was a second sequel.

I can't for the life of me understand why THE GHOST WRITER has been deemed a superior title. (And in any case, isn't it normally a single word, so shouldn't it be THE GHOSTWRITER?) Seems Hollywood thinks audiences are too stupid to cope with a flick called THE GHOST that isn't actually a story about supernatural goings-on. B)

I guess the suits were scared by the idea that a film might somehow surprise an audience.

Thanks, Gravity - I actually think you´re right: it could be that the simple "Ghost" or "The Ghost" was thrown out because audiences actually could mistake the film to be a remake of "Ghost". Also, they could have been afraid of audiences mistaking this film to be an actual supernatural thriller.

So? What's wrong with surprising them, or at least leaving a little ambiguity? It's not as if there wont have been any trailers and so forth giving plot hints/details before the film hits theatres.

US release date just announced as Feb. 19th.

And in Casino Royale fashion, here's a mysterious trailer where they're speaking all funny :

Thanks for that info. Hopefully it isn't delayed.

And now to check out that trailer...

Edit:
And ignoring the fact that I almost want to laugh at the German, that trailer's pretty sweet. Certainly looks like they did a good job of adaptating the book.

Actually, the German is rather good; I'm always impressed how terrific these actors master my language.

Very good trailer indeed, whets the appetite perfectly. Can't wait to see the film! B)

I didn't like the actors name intro pause made it look like HBO. The beginning of the trailer had a nice smooth European feel to it. Either way not sure I should be watching this no matter how much I love PB. Guess it will be Remember Me or Percy Jackson.....

This should be a terrific movie;
the book was wonderful, the casting is spot on and Polanski is usually very strong when adapting books...

Just a question and without trying to give away the plot too much, but how did the casting go right with PB? I thought it was an odd choice at first.

Absolutely!

Just seen the trailer for this awesome looking movie from the awesome novel by Robert Harris (he could really do a great Bond film and novel!).

Brosnan seems at his Osnard-best, McGregor is inspired casting as are the rest of the team.

Polanski ("Zee zed ze vas Zixteen") Polanski is a remarkable director and this Hitchcockian, Zeitgeist-y thriller looks great.

Let hope it lives as good as it reads.

I hadn’t been following the development of the movie, but having seen the trailer, I’ll definitely check it out. Looks decent enough fare.

I finished the novel a few days ago and thoroughly enjoyed it. Am looking forward to the movie. Given it's Eric Ambler-ish style, the movie could be a return to the heights of Polanski's much underappreciated Frantic from 1988!!

Yeah.

The McGuffin their roughing MacGregor up for in the trailer is the picture he's uncovered of Blair/Lang shoving the candle up a choir boy's B).

The picture we all know GW had over Blair.

And nice to see the title's been clarified. After all, we wouldn't want any silly Americans thinking they were expecting to see a horror movie, could we?
