The Rock keen to play Bond villain
Monday, March 10 2008, 15:12 GMT

By Beth Hilton, Entertainment Reporter

Posted ImageRex Features

Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson has revealed that he wants to play the villain in a James Bond movie.

The former wrestler said he would love to star in the franchise despite vowing to move away from his previous tough-guy roles.

He is quoted as saying: "I would love to be a Bond baddie. I am a big fan of the films."

The 35-year-old will star in Fox's The Tooth Fairy and voice a character in new animated film Planet 51.

He previously starred in The Scorpion King, Welcome to the Jungle and Southland Tales.

No thank you. I'll let the time honoured tradition that sees desperately dire screen stars touting themselves for a Bond film but then get nowhere near one thankfully continue....

Might be a good hench, but still like the current and former trend of going with all relative unknowns.

If an actor does bring luggage to a character in a Bond film, it shouldn’t be American Tourister.

No thanks. He can rock around the clock instead.

I could see him being a villan in an Austin Powers movie, but most definatly not a Bond film.

His visible role in the new Get Smart movie probably axes him from any list he might otherwise have made it onto.

I actually could see him as some minor henchman, provided the role isn't anything like Goldie's "Mr. Bullion."

But as the main villain? Nah.

I wouldn't be opposed to it, provided it happened when EON takes the series back to the more Hollywood, sci-fi direction that we saw with DAD (hopefully, though, when they go back in that direction, it will be done much better). Eventually, they're going to take the franchise back to the MOONRAKER approach and will start to cast more big names again, in which case I think that The Rock would be a decent addition to the franchise as a villain.

In the near future, though, I wouldn't like to see it happen. I'm a fan of getting the type of actors that they're casting now, people like Amalric and Wright are the types that EON should continue to pursue in the near future.

Me too. I can't see him as a main villain, which seems to be what he is talking about. I think they really are settled on going for unknowns at the moment.

The Rock is the most electrifying man in the sports entertainment industry. With that said, henchman is probably the best he could hope for.

Can Vin Diesel be far behind? His career isn't exactly going gangbusters these days. He's got a few projects, but going back to The Fast and the Furious isn't exactly a career boost by this point.

I was just looking back at some old threads back when he was saying how xXx was going to make people forget the Bond films. Big words for somebody who didn't even make the sequel.

I could see The Rock as a henchman, but not as the main villain. I doubt we will be seeing him in a Bond film anytime soon though. The producers seem to like going with unknowns recently, and I hope it stays that way.

Maybe cast his as the new 'Q'. I doubt if he would have any trouble with OO7 playing with his gadgets.

Bond "having problems keeping it up, 'Q'?"

Q "na, and I bet I could live you off the ground with only a slight erection".

I'm all for 'Dwayne' as a henchman...come on, you'd get a great fight scene between him and Craig. Its a pity he wasn't around for the Rog era, because then they could have an eyebrow duel

Best post! I'm imagining a video of a duel between different takes of Roger Moore and the Rock doing different eyebrow expressions.

Not only that, he was pretty darn good in The Rundown. He's clearly trying to lose the silly name in stages: we're now at Dwayne The Rock Johnson...soon to be modified to Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson...then Dwayne Johnson. But if Dan would feel more secure acting with a complete unknown...

That would, no doubt about it, be the longest movie ever. Or it should be. It should be all about the brows. Only close ups of four brows doing all sort of 'stuff'.

Like an animated feature. But with brows.

I like this idea. Someone make a call to the Rog and the Rock (or their managers), and suggest this idea to them.

Best.Idea.Ever.

Thanks Dino

Remember that as well. The first film seemed to just overflow with disappointment in everything it attempted to accomplish.

It is interesting that The Rock wants to be a bond villian. On one hand I don't see him playing anything other than a henceman but on the other hand you have to admit dude has shown range in his acting so he could pull off the pretty boy businessman type. On to the mentions of XXX I think Rock probably could have saved that series after Diesal left. Nothing against Ice Cube but Ice Cube is arguably the best at playing the comedy/family man type roles not action films. But The Rock has shown enough range that he could pull off numerous roles.
