HD is only slightly more than twice the resolution of a standard DVD. The resolution's not the issue, anyway. The issue is the lack of sharpness of the image on the standard disc. Which has nothing to do with the format, and everything to do with the poor quality of the video master. It's not so much a case of the Blu-ray looking great, as the standard DVD looking as soft as diarrhoea.
Some people have suggested that this type of picture degradation is a deliberate strategy on the part of Sony, to get people to upgrade. I couldn't possibly comment.
Sony aren't compromising DVD quality in order to sell more Blu-Ray copies, the quality that Blu-ray is able to provide is just that much better - 6x the resolution of DVD. Casino Royale is a first class Blu-Ray release, excellent picture quality, and the uncompressed PCM soundtrack is beautiful.

No one knows. Even though it looks like Toshiba will be calling it quits any day now, Blu-ray is still a niche market. But I will buy it and never look back. When are they all to be released on Blu-Ray.
Very true. It can only be as good as your source material. As the saying goes: garbage in, garbage out. In the case of the Bond movies, they spent the money to do frame by frame restorations of them all. You can bet this won't be done across the board, at least initially. Remember, the studios make money by selling you the same thing over & over again. I can hear it now, "You favorite movie, now with even better remastered high definition picture & sound."HD is only slightly more than twice the resolution of a standard DVD. I can just tell . Instinct - This happened when Craig was chosen as Bond and I said Casino Royale would be great.
Instinct??!! I'm more interested in my numbers than your instinct!

I own both formats & in the movies I have seen, they are a wash. You have your great movies, Casino Royale on Blu-ray & Transformers on HD-DVD, but you also have a lot of average looking movies. The very early Blu-ray discs used MPEG-2 compression & did not look as good. That was changed very quickly & both formats now use the same compression method. On the discs themselves, HD-DVD has a much better on-screen menu system than Blu-ray.I'm glad Blu Ray is about to win

More support from DVD-player AND movie companies made BR the winner. I'll have my Sony Vaio notebook soon.

BR can hold a lot more data than HD, so even if the picture quality is a wash, the amount of data on BR is better. The end result will be fewer discs to mess with. All the extras can be added to the BR - I believe.

The extra space is nice - especially if you have a burner & are using it for data back-ups on your computer. On the movie end, they have yet to really capitalize on the extra space. Most of the Blu-rays are the same as the regular DVD's but there are some exceptions out there. The extras are in varying degrees of high-def quality & some have standard DVD quality video as well. No surprise, it's better on the newer releases because the source material was shot in high-def to begin with. Since high-def video does take up a lot of space, I could see some sets needing multiple discs depending on the amount of video content they have.BR can hold a lot more data than HD, so even if the picture quality is a wash, the amount of data on BR is better. Agreed. I'll have my BR in the next 30 days. It was a long wait.I'm just glad 'Beta Wars 2.0' is over, BR wins, and I can now go out and purchase a new DVD player.

The only thing I can say is.... Bloody Brilliant
Does anyone else have Royale in HI Def? and if so how magical is it viewing 007 in HD?
Maybe it is time to think about getting a Blu-ray machine.

Nope, 1920x1080 vs 720x480. 6 times the resolution, or 5 if its 720x576.
Anyway I can't say much about the DVD of Casino Royale, never seen it. There's no going back after seeing and hearing the Blu-ray version.
