The bigger the TV you can watch it on, the more impressive it looks.
I have a 19" is that any good?

Some people have suggested that this type of picture degradation is a deliberate strategy on the part of Sony, to get people to upgrade. I couldn't possibly comment.

I hope I do on my 19" TV.
Is it a hi-def tv, with component or HDMI input?

Everything looked much better - except M, she aged 15 years on BR!
And Bond's shirt in Madagascar too. Really painful to see it in HD

I found the shirt stunning.Everything looked much better - except M, she aged 15 years on BR!

It is amazing how (low resolution) DVD's hide things & make people look a little younger than they are. Poor M.
MHarkin, you will see a difference on your TV over the standard DVD. You'll need to post your thoughts after you watch it.

Right. If there is ever a HD edition of AVTAK, I think a warning at the beginning will be necessary...

Can anyone advise me on how to maximize playback resolution (of any DVD) through my computer? The comparison link isn't too great. It's only showing the images as 405 x 720 pixels whereas the Bluray image is 1080 x 1920. The film looks much much better on Bluray - plus the sound is much better as well (if you've got the right speakers to benefit)

Dear Lord; poor Roger will look like a mummy!
Ah, well; better for me, then...

There have been far worse bits of clothing in this series over the years.

The biggest thing is to make sure your monitor is set to it's native resolution. Changes up or down can really impact quality across the board. The native resolution will be listed in the documents that came with your monitor or on the manufacturer's website. You could also try a DVD playback program like WinDVD or PowerDVD versus Windows Media Player which I have found to be average at best. Both of these programs are pay programs but have free trials that you can use to see if they help improve your experience before you buy.Can anyone advise me on how to maximize playback resolution (of any DVD) through my computer? The comparison link isn't too great. My first question is whether your monitor has a native HD resolution:Can anyone advise me on how to maximize playback resolution (of any DVD) through my computer? The comparison link isn't too great. 1080p: 1080 x 1920
720p: 720 x 1280
Sadly, my 3.75 year old laptop maxes out at 728 x 1024 so no HD there. My wife's computer's display, by way of comparison has a native resolution of "1680 by 1050" per the manufacturer's web site, so even there, the built in display still falls short of HD.

It's not so much a case of the Blu-ray looking great, as the standard DVD looking as soft as diarrhoea.
Some people have suggested that this type of picture degradation is a deliberate strategy on the part of Sony, to get people to upgrade. I couldn't possibly comment.
Sony aren't compromising DVD quality in order to sell more Blu-Ray copies, the quality that Blu-ray is able to provide is just that much better - 6x the resolution of DVD. Casino Royale is a first class Blu-Ray release, excellent picture quality, and the uncompressed PCM soundtrack is beautiful.

The more distant shots of buildings and crowds look beautiful.
The close-ups of the actors make them not look quite as good in Blu-Ray.
But I have to admit I like the look of the standard version B&W scenes better.
At least that is what I am seeing from the stills.
But I will buy it and never look back. When are they all to be released on Blu-Ray.

Mine is 42" plasma HD Ready, my wife can tell the difference between the HD player set to 720p and 1080p (1080p displays better) it's even obvious on the internal menus screens of the player. 1080p all the way.
